With the last slight shift to the east, they are saying we'll only get some wind, and maybe 2" of rain.  Sounds like the folks north of us could get hammered.  My 95 year old aunt lives on Long Island.

Had to re-book my youngest's flight back to college on Sunday.  No way is Newark going to open for arrivals and departures.  Fingers crossed that this new set of connections works.

My brother has 2 houses in Massachusetts, one is on the Cape. He took his boat out of the water yesterday. Being originally from Connecticut, I have MANY frieds in the path of it. The one I am most worried about lives on Long Island and has no place to go.

Of course, seeing as how that could impact your youngest's flights back to college!

Actually, last night NOAA was showing this graphic further west and overlapping this area:


At this point, at most, we may see some tropical storm force winds (~39 MPH), which is not unknown for storms in this area.

Delta just cancelled all flights coming out of Newark on Sunday.

Currently going through Cleveland, assuming they have the regional jet in RDU at the appointed time in order to start the expedition.  Turboprop from CLE to ROC.  Could be bumpy, but the Bombardier is a pretty solid little plane.  CLE is a hub for Continental, so if we can get that far, perhaps a connecting flight can be found.

All local soccer tournaments have been cancelled, and my assigned games as well.  Guess I'll be sitting around the house enjoying my day off.

Yes, getting to a hub is a good move. The other main option is Houston (assuming you don't cross into United, as they're still on separate operating certificates as things transition), which seems silly to fly to, so CLE should be good.

If she has to overnight in CLE, I recommend the La Quinta in North Olmsted - they have a shuttle, and the rooms are nice. Avoid the Ramada at all costs.

Thanks for the hotel info Aaron, hopefully we won't have to go that route, but better to be prepared.

Irene is a bit weaker at the moment, so maybe things won't be so bad.  Waiting for the 11 pm advisory.  Fingers crossed.

Not near the coast here but Irene is having a small impact with a high wind warning: 

* TIMING...THROUGH MIDNIGHT.

* WINDS...NORTH 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH.

* IMPACTS...WINDS WILL BRING SOME TREES AND POWERLINES DOWN WITH
  SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES LIKELY. NORMALLY WINDS OF THIS MAGNITUDE
  ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO CAUSE DAMAGE...HOWEVER STRONG WINDS
  FROM THE NORTH ARE NOT COMMON. TREES IN THE AREA ARE ANCHORED
  FOR PREVAILING WEST TO SOUTHWEST WINDS AND ARE VERY SUSCEPTIBLE
  TO EVEN MARGINALLY STRONG WINDS FROM THE NORTH.

Family of friends and on-line friends who live in affected areas are all ok, although some without power, some tree damage, etc.

Edit note:  I just learned that a long-time friend from Freedomlist had some significant house damage.  This friend lives in east/central Pennsylvania.   Two of their neighbor's trees toppled, taking one of their trees, with all three ending up on their roof.  They are ok though and the house can be repaired.

I'm in the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk/Portsmouth, VA).  Personally, I lost some big branches and a few roof shingles.  My power and cable (landline, tv,internet) went out Saturday around 2:00 pm but came on around midnight last night.  The Outer Banks of NC (around 1 1/2 - 2 hours from here) were torn up - my son was planning on camping on Hatteras Island over the weekend but they went to one of the guys' cottages in Kitty Hawk.  They left there (thank goodness) Friday evening.  Hatteras is completely cut off - I think the only road in and out has been cut in 5(?) places.  It looks like the folks up north are dealing with some major flooding.   Hope everyone out there stays safe.

So glad you're ok, mamabear, especially since your area was targeted to be hit hard. 

Someone from another forum is also in the Hampton Roads area.  He and his wife have family and friends all over and he wasn't about to be without power and devised the setup in the link below is to charge their phones.  There is a separate feed coming off the battery for the cable modem.  After losing power, he was planning on switching the cable modem over to DC power in order to be able to stay online.

I think he was disappointed because it wasn't needed.
