Google Earth
« on: July 30, 2005, 08:57:18 AM »
Why not have a look from above on yourself ?
This Google/nVidia application uses sattelite photos so that you could look at your favourite places from above.

Major cities are extremely detailed, you could zoom so close that you see your car and garden furniture

http://earth.google.com/

http://earth.google.com/faq.html#5

The download file is about 10 Mbs.

I could tell more about it...........but now I see my car isn´t in the parking lot so I have to find out why my son apparently borrowed it witout permission  :tease:

I attached a pic of the house where my kids are living and the parking places are marked with red. There is a possibility to zoom down to zero altitude, but with loss of the image quality.

I always get "lost" in those types of maps.  As soon as I get close, I manage to hit the zoom NE or SW and I cannot find my way back out of the forest or, worse yet, off the lake.  :(

I was in Moscow Russia today  :D  Actually, my eyes were peering about in RedSquare. That is one accurate piece of techno. I zoomed in to my own apartment and sent it via an email to a friend along with hers. She was surprised at the clarity and detail.
It's amazingly fast, from a purely planetary globla view to near street level by a few maneuvers of the mouse. Very Clever.

Another nice feature is that you can tilt the picture and fly over the city so it´s  like flying by helicopter or airplane.

Is anyone using Google Earth successfully with dialup?  It looks like fun, but I'm not gonna waste time downloading just to find it won't work with my connection.

The following copied from http://kh.google.com/download/earth/index.html

Something you should know about Google Earth (beta)...

Google Earth is a broadband, 3D application that not all computers can run.

    * Apple Macintosh computers are not supported at this time (but we are working on it).
    * Windows-based desktop PCs older than 4 years old may not be able to run it.
    * Windows-based notebook PCs older than 2 years old may not be able to run it.

More specifics about what you need to run Google Earth...

Minimum configuration:

    * Operating system: Windows 2000, Windows XP
    * CPU speed: Intel® Pentium® PIII 500 MHz
    * System memory (RAM): 128MB
    * 200MB hard-disk space
    * 3D graphics card: 3D-capable video card with 16MB VRAM
    * 1024x768, 32-bit true color screen
    * Network speed: 128 kbps ("Broadband/Cable Internet")

Recommended configuration:

    * Operating system: Windows XP
    * CPU speed: Intel® Pentium® P4 2.4GHz+ or AMD 2400xp+
    * System memory (RAM): 512MB
    * 2GB hard-disk space
    * 3D graphics card: 3D-capable video card with 32MB VRAM or greater
    * 1280x1024, 32-bit true color screen
    * Network speed: 128 kbps ("Broadband/Cable Internet")

 Yet more info about what you need to run Google Earth...

When people experience problems running Google Earth, what kind of 3D graphics capabilities your machine has is usually the source.

The Google Earth application will work on most graphics cards from the following manufacturers:

    * NVIDIA
    * ATI*
    * 3D Labs
    * Intel**
    * Matrox
    * S3

* The following ATI cards are not supported: ATI Rage Mobility, ATI Xpert, ATI 3D Rage.

** Intel 3D graphics machines can use the default OpenGL version, but work better in DirectX (choose Start > Programs > Google Earth > Start Google Earth in DirectX).

Matrox card users must use the OpenGL version. S3 cards must use the DirectX version.

The following steps can help you find out what type of graphics card you have. Note: the instructions that follow apply to the Windows XP operating system, but are similar for other versions of Windows.

   1. Open the Control Panel window by selecting it from the Start menu. Double-click on the System icon in this window to display the System Properties dialog. Click on the Device Manager button in the Hardware panel.
   2. In the Device Manager window, double-click the Display Adaptors icon to list the graphics card(s) for your computer.

The make and model of your graphics card appears under the Display Adaptor tab.

I´m not on a regular "broadband", I have an ADSL-connection via my telephone line and it works perfectly.
My system specs meets the recommended values.
XP SP2
P4 2,4 Ghz
512 Mb 333 DDR
nVidia FX 5700 256 Mb
2 X 80 GB Hdd
My weakest link would be my monitor, which has hung in since I built my first system 6 years ago.But it´s still able to view 1024x768 @85Hz.

I just saw that hayc already posted about this application, long before I did :

I´m sorry hayc.
I didn´t see it, because I hadn´t expanded the "software"-section. When I did, I had lots of new and old posts to read.  :P

Man, this is a real feat of techno now, i'm seriously tinkering with applying animated overlays of weather images in real-time!!!  Wonder if they thought of that.
