or, as i had a mini usb cable, buy a gigaware (brand) mini usb to micro usb adapter, p/n 26-1528
unlike other forums recommendations,
set bitpim to the lg vx5500
set it to display filesystem
browse to the "brew" folder, my pix were in a "10888" folder
r. click each file in turn and "save" to your pc

you can likewise copy pix up to the phone)
i hope this helps someone with a no-simm-card phone, like all verizon phones.
