Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for April 2017
« on: April 11, 2017, 04:49:35 PM »
Microsoft has released the following Security Bulletin(s) for April 2017.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/default.aspx

Bulletin Summary: https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-us/security-guidance/releasenotedetail/42b8fa28-9d09-e711-80d9-000d3a32fc99

The April 2017 security release consists of security updates for the following software:

Internet Explorer
Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps
Visual Studio for Mac
.NET Framework
Silverlight
Adobe Flash Player

Please note the following information regarding the security updates:

Beginning with the October 2016 release, Microsoft is changing the update servicing model for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2.  For more information, please see this Microsoft Technet article https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/08/15/further-simplifying-servicing-model-for-windows-7-and-windows-8-1/

Windows 10 updates are cumulative. The monthly security release includes all security fixes for vulnerabilities that affect Windows 10, in addition to non-security updates. The updates are available via the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Starting in March 2017, there will be a Windows 10 1607 delta package that contains just the delta changes between the previous month and the current release.

Updates for Windows RT 8.1 and Microsoft Office RT software are only available via Windows Update.

In addition to security changes for the vulnerabilities, updates include defense-in-depth updates to help improve security-related features.

As a reminder, the Security Updates Guide will be replacing security bulletins https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-us/security-guidance

4015549 still has a problem installing.  I had to go to 4015546 which installs with no problem. I have had to take the same action for 6 months.  I was hoping Microsoft would fix this as I am not the only person facing whatever the problem is.

ChuckRJr, you really should bookmark this site https://www.askwoody.com/
I go there almost daily to see what is happening.

April's updates have not been installed on any computers (four Win 7 and one XP with Office 2007) in my house. I'm waiting until Woody moves from 1 to 3 or 4 before I'll attempt any updates.

A lot of information, Thanks.  I DON'T see where he references the issue about only the Security portion will install.

You might want to ask in Woody's forum if anyone has a problem where only the Security update will install but the Security and Quality rollup refuses to install. Has this been going on since October 2016 when the bundles first appeared?

I install the Security only updates manually so if I have this issue, I would not be aware of it.

I looked into Woody and it looks good.  The problem is that I CAN'T get a password.  I registered and was told a password would be e-mailed to me.  24hours and nothing has shown up.  There seem to be other parts to 4105549.  I will try them and see what happens.

Of course there are. It is a bundle of both security and non-security updates.
The problem is, you can not install parts of the bundle. It is all or nothing. MS has stopped individual patches starting in Oct. 2016; everything is a bundle.

Go back through your history to October 2016 and see if KB3185330 is installed. If not, and you want the monthly Security and Quality rollup, install that first.

I tried to install KB3185330 and like the Rollups it ended up Reverting the Changes.  Is there a log where I can bet more detail as to what it did not like?  CBS for today will not allow access.  Is there a way to close it so it becomes accessable? Is there another log.

I'm going to repeat the suggestion I made to you in December:  "If you continue having problems, please get assistance from my friends at Sysnative who specialize in Windows Update problems.  Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions" and seconded by Digerati:  "I second Corrine's suggested to let folks at Sysnative take a look. They really are Windows Updates experts."

Non-Security Update for Creators Build with quality improvements.  See April 25, 2017—KB4016240 (OS Build 15063.250) for improvements and fixes.

Non-Security Update for Creators Build with quality improvements.  See April 25, 2017—KB4016240 (OS Build 15063.250) for improvements and fixes.

This should be offered on patch Tuesday, in May. If you had previously updated manually and are having any of the described problems listed, you can do a standalone update. If you are not having any of the problems listed, I would recommend waiting until it is released on patch Tuesday. If creators update is already installed on the system it is just a patch, not a complete upgrade. It is considered a Critical Update, not a security update.

P.S.  Note X86 or 64-bit option.

It was a "C week" update, not a security update and only offered to devices that already have version 1703, Creators Update installed. None of the changes involved security issues.
