AVAST 4.8 Free version VS Norton Internet Security 2009 or 2010
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:26:49 PM »
I had Norton IS 2009 installed on my computer and it quit working. It wouldn't scan at all.  I had 2 downloads available to me so I decided to uninstall it and download a new copy, in the process I was offered help thru CHAT and took the help.  They remotely uninstalled Norton IS 2009 and offered me NIS 2010 since I had trouble.  BUT, I had already decided to download AVAST free version, but the Norton 2010 is ready and waiting for me to download.  I don't think Norton will allow me to have AVAST on my computer, so my question is:  Should I accept the NIS 2010 version or keep Avast?  Which one will do a better job?  Today is the first day I've had AVAST. As I understand it, AVAST is antivirus only, while NIS does a lot of other things, too.  NIS or  AVAST??!!

zyno,
As you have been givern Norton Internet Secury Suite  2010 I recommend that you use it.
After all it is the suite not just the Anti-Virus and after all you can always install the free copy of AVAST  at a later date if requierd.

press Enter then have a Brandy then if the problem is still there have another Brandy
Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

Thank-you, GR@PH;<'S , you have given me the voice of reason that I guess I needed.  However, AVAST did find 2 viruses that NIS2009 had not found.  I also loaded Superantispyware and it found 279 adware tracking ?!#'s.  I guess I was wondering if one is better than the other.  But you are right, I can download AVAST later if needed.  I'm assuming NIS will want me to either uninstall AVAST & Superantispy or it will disable them?   Thanks, again.

Hi, zyno.

SuperAntispyware is not an antivirus software.  Thus, there should not be any conflicts with either Norton or Avast.  It will be up to you to uninstall Avast via Add/Remove Programs.  Then run the uninstaller to get any remnants.  Direct download link:  http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Since you had problems with NIS 2009, before installing NIS 2010, I suggest you check Add/Remove programs for an uninstaller for NIS 2009 and then run the removal tool.  Direct download link: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Thank you, Corrine!  Thank you for the link for the AVAST uninstaller. For the NIS 2009, Norton remoted me yesterday and ran the removal tool.  I realize SuperAntispyware is not an antivirus tool, it found a lot of tracking cookies, though.  Norton Internet Security 2009 should have caught those but evidently did not.  My bottom line question is if it were you, would you use AVAST & an antispyware program & maybe so others,  OR,  NIS2010 which should take care of viruses and spy programs.  TIA!

Hi, zyno.

Not only is everyone different in their preferences and surfing practices, each PC is different -- even if they began identically -- once off the shelf, we all put our own personal stamp, making each machine unique.  What you like and works well on your computer would likely differ from my preferences and computers.

That said, as GR@PH;<'S indicated, since you have a paid license of Norton installed on your computer, if it is working well on your computer, why not give it a go?  There is also no reason to remove SAS from your machine.  The only recommendation is to not have real-time monitoring by both NIS and SAS.  Also, after doing a scan with SAS, be sure to shutdown/restart your computer prior to scanning with NIS.

You may also be interested in including my favorite security software to your arsenal -- WinPatrol, which includes the features described at http://www.winpatrol.com/features.html
