How can the firms make free anti-virus programmes?

Well I just worder: How can firms make free anti-virus programmes, who are almost as good as the one you pay for?
How do they get money to make it, and pay their workers?

And why do people buy the anti-virus programmes, if some, like avast! Home is as good as to excample Norton or Bullguard, like some say they are.

Do not know if it is true or not.

Some create programs and give them out for free in hopes that it will become very popular and a big company will buy the rights to the program.
Some give out the basic program for free and charge for other things like automatic updates or a more full featured product.
Some people (like me) are too lazy to keep up with the manual updates and find a great deal on a product like Norton and figure it's worth $10 a year for automatic protection.
And some programmers are just caring and generous and want to do the right thing and help others protect their computer from malware, so they give out their programs with no strings attached.
