I cannot upload photos, or run anything malware or avast....
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:16:49 PM »
So, my computer is having issues obviously.

First it started off, with my antivirus 2009 (that I had not installed) going crazy about spyware. So I ran some scans, it seemed ok, then my C:/Local disappeared. That was recovered. I was able to use the computer fine for a while. Now it's decided that it doesn't want to upload images to anything. I go to school online and whenever I try to post an assignment it just says that it's attaching the file..but when I check on it, 4 hours later it's still saying that. When I try to upload to flickr or photobucket, they say it's a network error that happened during the upload process. I've even tried to burn these files and they won't burn.

I've run housecall 6.6, spysweeper, and more recently spybot search and destroy. Spybot seems to do the most good. I have followed a different thread where this guy was having a similar problem, and one of the women in this forum told him to delete everything in the localhost bak file, that wasn't localhost. This I have done. I've also uninstalled any problems that were not installed by myself.

Any suggestions would be fantastic.

Hi hmgaskamp, and welcome.

In your reply to this please tell us some basics about your computer, such as the Operating System that you are using (95/98/2000/XP/Vista etc), amount of memory, any firewalls installed, AV or anti malware applications; such information helps us to help you.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25 .  Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply and a fresh HijackThis log and let us know how your computer is doing.

Hi, hmgaskamp.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Supplemental to Eric the Red's instructions, you can get HijackThis© from one of the following sites:  Note:  If you have used any anti-spyware applications, please shutdown/restart the computer before scanning with HijackThis©.

At the download prompt, choose "Save"
  • Navigate to the saved file and double-click the installer, HJTsetup.exe
  • By default, HijackThis© will be installed on your computer at C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis, making an entry in the Start menu and also providing a Desktop shortcut
  • When the installation is complete, double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop
  • Select "Do a system scan and save the Logfile"
  • When the scan is completed, Notepad will launch with the log.   Please UNcheck Word Wrap in Notepad (Click Format > UNcheck Word Wrap)
  • Do not fix anything that you see in the log. (Scanning will not make any changes to your computer.  Most of what is found is harmless or even required.)
  • Copy/Paste the log as a reply  (Select Edit > Select All > Edit Copy)
  • Close HijackThis and Notepad

Thank you for the responses, however, when I clicked either of those links that both of you sent, it told me it failed to connect, that, tho the website seems valid, it was unable to connect.

I'm running Windows XP, and have 512 MB of RAM. I don't know anything about Firewalls, what I have or don't have. There are no Malware or AV applications that I know of.

Let's see if some manual cleanup will allow you to download additional tools so we can see the nature of the problem.

To manually clean the temp files, delete the following directory contents (but not the directory folder):
  • C:\Windows\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <=This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Let's see if your Hosts file is infected and preventing you from getting to the download sites.
  • Go to C:\WINDOWS\System 32\drivers etc
  • Right click on the host file and select Open.
  • When prompted, choose the option to "select the program from a list" and Open with Notepad
  • There will likely be a sample entry with the # symbol next to it.  Otherwise, the standard entry is for localhost:  127.0.0.1       localhost
  • Unless you placed entries in the Hosts file, delete any other entries except for 127.0.0.1       localhost

Go to Add/Remove Programs and look for an uninstaller for any software up did not install.  To do this, follow these steps:
  • Click Start, point to Programs, and then search for a folder with the name of the program that you want to remove or the name of a program that may have included the program that you want to remove.
  • Point to the Program_Name folder, and then click the file to remove the program if the file exists. For example, the file might be named Unist.exe, Uninstall, or Uninstall Program_Name.
  • Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the program.
  • Empty your recycle bin.

Because there may not be an entry in Add/Remove Programs or a Start Menu folder but may still be a folder on the hard disk, check with Explorer for any new folders added (sort by date) and check for an uninstall option:
  • Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Explore.
  • Expand the folder tree to look for a folder with the name of the program that you want to remove or the name of a program that may have included the program that you want to remove.
  • When you find the unwanted program's folder, click the folder.
  • In the right-pane, if a file to remove the program exists, double-click that file. For example, the file may be named Unist.exe, Uninstall, or Uninstall Program_Name.
  • Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to remove the program.
  • Empty your recycle bin.
Note: If you find a folder for the program that you want to remove, but you do not find a remove file to remove the program, do not delete the folder or the contents of the folder. If you delete the folder or the contents of the folder, you may adversely affect your computer performance and operation. For example, Windows may not start, programs may not start, or programs may stop running.
After completing those steps, please do the following:
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

you stated you had run housecall, spysweeper, and spybot search and destroy, those are malware programs they remove spyware and malware from your pc, these are the kinds of programs that Corrine is asking you to make sure are disabled.

the antivirus 2009 is NOT an antivirus program that is an infection which is causing your problems just wanted to make sure you knew not to trust that as an AV program.

Ok,

I've already done the things listed, the removal of files under local host and the uninstalling of programs that I didn't install. But when I click the link it still says that it's failed to connect. I know about antivirus, and uninstalled it, because it was giving me problems..but I I still can't look at that website..any other suggestions?

Hi, hmgaskamp.  Several questions for you. . .

The links provided for HijackThis, MBAM and RSIT are direct download links not URLs to browse to.  Are the downloads being blocked by your firewall?  Did you try each of the provided download links after clearing your Hosts File?  Are you unable to download any file?

By any chance is ZoneAlarm installed on your computer and if it is, what version is installed?

Are the Avast definition files being updated?  If so, have you tried scanning in safe mode?  To restart your computer in Safe Mode, do the following:
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu will appear. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe Mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Those links that are being provided, may not be URLS but when I click on them, they tell me it failed to connect, even in safe mode. It's taking me somewhere to download these things....I'm guessing to a website, since I'm not being sent the download thru an email or file..

I don't have ZoneAlarm. I also don't know if my firewall is doing anything..or even if I have one. I'm able to download things..I just can't from those particular places, I know I have some sort of virus, which is why I can't get to those websites I think.

And I don't know what an AVAST definition file is, so I can't say yay or nay on that one.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.

No, those links are not taking you to a website.  They are the direct links to download the files so would not be sent through an email.

The definition files are the updates for an anti-virus or anti-malware software.  Can you launch the Avast icon in the system tray and check for updates?  If so, please update it and then do a full system scan -- a complete scan of your computer.

Also please try an on-line scan.  Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan *

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.

=====================

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan and save a Logfile'. Save the log file and post it here.

Ok...all of you keep saying things about Avast, I don't know what that is. I don't know if I have it, and if I do how to get to it.

Can someone tell me how to do that?

See if you can download from here:  http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Click the link and download and register, it is free and a very good anti-virus program that automatically updates daily.  It is a good place to start.
Since you don't seem to know about firewalls, I hope you are at least running the one that came with XP?  Go to Start button, then to Settings, then Control Panel, then to Security Center.  Under Security Essentials, hopefully the radio button is green?  If it is not, notice near the bottom of the page is" Manage Security settings for :  Select Windows Firewall and tick the Green Shield ON radio button.  At least you will have this until the group is able to get you further in this dilemma.  Then you will be advised about several good, free firewalls for your protection.  Hopefully you will be able to download AVast! and update then do a scan?!  This link is clicky and should take you directly to the AVast! website for the download on the very page you land on, just below the the Target on the right side of the page.
I can't know...?

No, no,  sorry I meant our group of helpers here at Lzd.  Sorry I confused you. Like I use Online Armor and I really like it and it is much more of a firewall than what came with your computer!!!!!!  Did you try hitting the control button at the same time you click the link?  Possibly you may have some kind of protection, unbeknownest to you that is Not allowing you to click links?

hope you guys don't mind me joining in for a post:

If you delete the folder or the contents of the folder, you may adversely affect your computer performance and operation. hmgaskamp:
these were exceptionally specific directions, are you positive you followed these correctly?
i had a similar infection before, and manual cleanup allowed me to gain access to the net, after that, removal wasn't too too difficult...

also: are you able to navigate through common sites such as google, yahoo, or other similar search engines?
