ieox.exe
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:24:29 PM »
What is this file? Everytime I start my computer I get a message that ieox32.dll cannot be found. When I use Spybot Search & Destroy to check my active System Startupcheck files, ieox32.exe is shown residing in my Windows\system32 folder. I have looked around the 'net and found many places indicating that ieox32.dll was a trojan or some such thing. Can someone clarify what this execution file is?

I should also note that have a similar issue with ctfmon.exe

Hi, adolpr.  There is no question that ieox.exe does not belong on your computer.  On the other hand, ctfmon.exe is generally considered a valid process.  However, as noted below, it could also be a trojan, which steals passwords.  Thus, my advice is if you do any internet banking, bill paying, online purchasing, go to another computer (family member, friend, neighbor, local public library) and change those passwords ASAP.  Then do not access any of those accounts with the infected machine until it has been cleaned.
ctfmon.exe
Quote
Description:
ctfmon.exe is a process belonging to Microsoft Office Suite. It activates the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the
Microsoft Office XP Language Bar. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Note: ctfmon.execould also be a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

In order to determine the full nature of the infection, we need to see a log.  Please download HijackThis© from:  http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Note:  This is a complete installer that installs HijackThis to your computer to at C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut.

At the download prompt, choose "Save".  After the download is complete, navigate to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder and double-click it.  When the installation is complete, double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop.  Select "Do a system scan and save logfile".  Select a name for this first logfile and a text file will be produced.  Please have word wrap turned ON in Notepad. Copy the text file and paste it here as a reply.

Hi, adolpr.

A.  Please download Trend-Micro's CWShredder from http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/online-tools/cwshredder.exe
  • Save it to the desktop
  • Open CWShredder and click on *check for updates*.  If any updates are found, please download and install them
  • Then, to run the tool, press the *Fix* Button (don't use the scan button).
  • The tool will run and remove any CWS infections found.

B.  Please download About:Buster from here:  http://www.malwarebytes.org/AboutBuster.zip
  • Unzip it to the desktop and launch it
  • Click on *Update*.  If any updates are found, download and install them.
  • Press the *Remove* button to run the tool.
C.  Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe .  Save it to your Desktop. Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.
D.  Just to be sure, let's take a look at a Haxdoor log.  Please download haxfix.exe
and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on haxfix.exe to install haxfix. (standard installation path is c:\program Files\haxfix)
  • Checkmark "Create a desktop icon"
  • Click "Next"
  • When the installation is completed, make sure that the checkmark "Launch HaxFix" is placed
  • Click "Finish"
A red "dos window" (dos box) will open with options:
1. Make logfile
2. Run auto fix
3. Run manual fix
4. Run Goldun fix
E. Exit Haxfix

  • Select option 1. Make logfile by typing 1 and then pressing Enter
  • Haxfix will start scanning the computer. When it is finished a logfile will open: haxlog.txt > (c:\haxfix.txt)
  • Copy the contents of that logfile and paste it into this thread.
E. Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop.  Choose "Do a system scan and save logfile".

F.  Post a reply with the new HijackThis log and the contents of the haxlog.txt.  Please let us know how your PC is doing.  :rose:[/list]

I need to make a correction to something in my original post. When I turned on my computer this morning I checked to confirm the file names that were in my messages. ctfmon.exe was not one of them (although it is on my computer), so I apologize for posting bad information. The other message references file vlrs.dll:vgbqv

I completed all of your recommendations. No bad files were found with the CWS and About:Buster scans; ATF Cleaner - cleaned 55Mb of files; ieox.exe and vlrs.dll:vgbqv still show up as O4 entries in my HijackThis log.

Re: ieox.exe

As the ctfmon.exe is "coming and going" and is located in System32, it appears to be the legitimate file so not to worry there.

As to CWS not being found, that is strange, because I found ieox32.exe identified as CWS but wanted to be sure it wasn't a new Haxdoor variant with a hidden 020.  Fortunately, it doesn't appear to be.  So, let's get cleaning.

A.  Please download the Killbox © Option^Explicit and unzip it to the desktop

B.  Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall any prior versions of Sun Java
  •    Close any open programs you may have running, especially your web browser
  •    Click Start > Control Panel (Depending on your OS or configuration, you may have to click Start > Settings > Control Panel)
  •    Open Add or Remove Programs (If you have Windows 98 or Windows 2000, open Add/Remove Programs)
  •    Click once on any item listing J2SE or Java Runtime Environment in the name.  (Not every version of Java will begin with "Java" so be sure to read each entry in the list)

  •    Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
  •    Follow steps 4 and 5 as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java
  •    Search 'Programs' and 'Application Data' and remove old version files manually, keeping only J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8.
    • C:\Program Files\
    • C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\
  •    Restart your PC once all Java components have been removed
C.  Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, if found, and press "Fix Checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)

D.  Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieox32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\vlrs.dll:vgbqv

For these files, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

E.  Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop.  Choose "Do a system scan and save logfile".  Post a reply with the new HijackThis log.

Let me know how your system is doing.  :rose:

Re: ieox.exe
« Reply #7 on: September 18, 2006, 02:40:11 AM »
After my last post I tried a number of things to get rid of ieox32.exe and vlrs.dll:vgbqv but I had a conflict with these files being on my TeaTimer blacklist. For whatever reason it would not let me get rid of them until I got them off the blacklist. Once that was done I was able to clean them up. I did run Killbox just to be sure and received the message that both files were removed by another source.

I ran an ewido scan and it turned up some CWS files that the Shredder missed - when I checked for updates I was told I had the most current version. The ewido log is shown below. After they were quarantined I then deleted the files.

As for the rest of your the cleaning, I can't seem to get rid of any of the items on your list. I tried twice and there were no changes. I then tried in Safe Mode and they all disappeared. However as soon as I restarted my computer they were all back.

Is there anything odd about O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.127.104.144 (HKLM)? For the past week when I run HijackThis and the scan gets to this item it takes 60-75 seconds before it moves on and completes the scan. This had not happened when I originally began using this program.

Hi, adolpr.

After my last post I tried a number of things to get rid of ieox32.exe and vlrs.dll:vgbqv but I had a conflict with these files being on my TeaTimer blacklist. For whatever reason it would not let me get rid of them until I got them off the blacklist.
Sorry, I should have told you to deactivate TeaTimer or boot to safe mode to remove those.  I'm glad you figured it out on your own.  Be sure to put them back on the TeaTimer blacklist -- although I wonder how they got past it.

Is there anything odd about O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.127.104.144 (HKLM)?
Personally, I don't like to put any entry in the Trusted Zone.  Although the IP address you are using is registered to the ISC Group, I hadn't suggested removing 64.127.104.144 because it is registered to what appears to be a valid company and is not listed in Webhelper's CWS listing:

OrgName: Global Netoptex, Inc
OrgID: GLOBA-10
Address: 100 Park Center Plaza
Address: Suite 365
City: San Jose
StateProv: CA
PostalCode: 95113
Country: US

You can certainly remove the 015 object and then return it if needed.  As to the other items for removal, that was merely cleanup.

Please let me know what you do with the 015 and if your problem has been solved.  If not, we'll delve deeper.

Thanks again for your help. I have just one thing to relate back concering your response.

I did not intentionally place this O15 item in the trusted zone and I have no clue what it may be. In fact when I check my trusted sites in Internet Security Properties, it shows no entries in that zone. I have looked around their website and I can see nothing that they do that relates back to anything I have done within the past month (roughly when I started to notice HJT getting bogged down on O15).

Is there a way to track down this file or whatever it is on my computer?

Other than this item my computer seems generally healthy. My CPU usage pegs to 100% more frequently than it used to but not to the point where I consider it annoying.

Hi, adolpr.  Well, you've answered my question.  That 015 got in the trusted zone with the infection.

Please scan with HijackThis and remove this:

O15 - Trusted IP range: 64.127.104.144 (HKLM)

The files I suggested removing above can still be removed.  The "file missing" 02 items are:

SSVHelper Class   {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43}   L BHO    ssv.dll   Related to Sun_Java_software

Google Toolbar Helper   {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7}   L BHO    googletoolbar.dll, googletoolbar*.dll, googlenav.dll, googletoolbar_en_*.**-big.dll, googletoolbar_en_*.*.**-deleon.dll   Google Toolbar

As to the 016 DPF entries without an identification after them, some are good, some I did not locate when researching them.  They are Downloaded Program Files, hence the "DPF" indication.  They can always be downloaded again if needed.  However, for those I could not identify, it would be best to remove them.

For additional information on protecting your PC, please see Tony Klein's "So how did I get infected in the first place?" for important tips on how to prevent future infections.  There is also a lot of helpful information in "Mitch's Good Stuff" linked from here.

Install and update both SpywareBlaster & SpyGuard to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software:

SpywareBlaster -- http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard --  http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html

If you use Internet Explorer, IE-Spyad will add thousands of sites into your IE restricted zone:  http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/resource.htm

I really like WinPatrol, which includes the features described here.

Regards,

Corrine :rose:

Not much success really. I was able to delete the O15 item, but interestingly when I run the HJT scan it still hangs up on O15 yet when the scan is complete there is no O15 file displayed.

I tried several times to delete the O2 BHO items shown with "no file" and the O16 DPF files with no description. I used HJT and Spybot S&D both in normal mode and in Safe Mode numerous times, but while I could delete the files once I resarted the computer they were all back.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Suggestions?

Hi, adolpr.

Please post a startup list and a fresh HijackThis log.  Don't be alarmed if the startup list is lengthy:
  • Launch HijackThis and press the Config Button
  • Click Misc Tools
  • Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log
  • Click the generate startuplist log button.
  • Paste the contents into your next reply

Thank you, adolpr.  Let's tackle this from another angle since some of the 016 objects relate to vulnerable versions of Sun Java and some malware plays with HiJackThis.exe so it doesn't show the malware.  Please right-click on HiJackThis.exe and rename it to HJTabc.exe and continue with the instructions below as well as going back to my earlier instructions to check Add/Remove programs for anything with J2SE or Java Runtime Environment in the name (except the current J2SE(TM) Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8) and uninsitall any found.

A.  Please download CCleaner v1.30.310 - Slim from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx and check ewido for definition file updates.

B.  Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
C.  Use CCleaner:
  • Close all open programs, including Internet Explorer, Fire Fox and any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Launch CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies.  Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
  • Then select the following items
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
      • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
      • Clean all entries in the "System" section except Windows Log Files.
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
      • Please UNcheck "Utilities" (i.e., Ad-Aware, ewido and other security program logs.)
    • Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
    • Click exit.

    D.  Launch ewido and do a complete scan as before, allowing ewido to remove what is found.

    E. Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following and press "Fix Checked":

    At your option:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file) <--- Google Toolbar Helper

    F.  Restart in Normal Mode, scan with HijackThis and reply with the following the ewido log and a fresh HijackThis log.

    Thank you.
