Not sure if I have a problem or not.... Windows2008Antivirus?
« on: October 20, 2008, 02:01:38 PM »
I got a pop up screen a while ago instructing me I had a trojan and should clean it up by downloading something called Windows Antivirus 2008.  Seemed suspicious, but while I was clicking around, I found that an exe file had appeared on my desktop....I didn't open it, just trashed it.

I did a google search and found it was some kind of bogus program.   (I had been using the free AVG antivirus program at the time.)  I have since changed virus programs to CA which comes with our cable provider.  I checked on the CA site and this is what they said about Windows 2008 Antivirus:
Quote
Rogue Security Software:  Security software that uses deceptive means for installation and purpose. Once installed, the rogue software usually uses scare tactics to inform the user that spyware or malware is installed on their system. The rogue security software then claims to offer remediation in exchange of payment. These applications can come bundled with other malware that serve other purposes. This software usually comes in the form of Anti-spyware, or Anti-virus applications.
http://www.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453134939#section7

All the checks, including AdAware and the CA scan showed no infections. Since the scans were showing clean, I didn't think anymore about it until I ran a Spybot check.

The Spybot check also gave a clean result....except, I noticed these files appearing during the check:

zlob.downloader
zlob.downloader.bs
smitfraud***
virtumonde.dll
virtumonde.sci
virtumonde.sdn

the above series of files took almost 20 minutes to scan (pre-file numbers were flying through...does that mean there are thousands of them?)

I can't find any of these files, or any of the ones listed by CA to remove in regards to Windows 2008 Antivirus by using windows explorer's search function.

Is this something I should be concerned about?

What operating system are you using?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply

BTW, don't be too hard on yourself ...

Antivirus 2008 tricks the user via deceptive pop-up ads that mimic Windows notifications ... it doesn't matter whether you click the Yes and No button, either way a download starts.

Thanks for your help. I did exactly as you directed because my friend R-C says that is safe. Thanks R-C for directing me to this site.

OK...I'm assuming this is a good thing? Or is something hiding?

If so, what about the files I listed in my first post...what are they?  when I searched the CA site for them, there were entries on each one, but I didn't know how to interpret them.  Please forgive my ignorance...I can get around my computer pretty well, but I don't always know what I'm doing.

Hey gurl! the antivirusxp is a really prevalent nasty lately it seems to be everywhere.  Luckily the great folks here can clean it up. Usually malwarebytes does  good job.
You might find this article of interest it is about this specific infection type.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/22/anatomy_of_a_hack/print.html
If you go to any of the help forums like here and BBR etc and look for antivirusxp you will see dozens of them asking for help.
When you see that type of thing pop up do not click anything at all instead do a control alt delete and close out your browser instead that is about the only way to kill it, if you click it automatically starts to install.

You should also go read the articles posted here on clickjacking,  if you have not updated your flash you will want to.

Installing and Scanning with HijackThis©
  • At the download prompt from one of the above locations, choose "Save"
  • Navigate to the saved file and double-click the installer, HJTsetup.exe
  • By default, HijackThis© will be installed on your computer at C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis, making an entry in the Start menu and also providing a Desktop shortcut
  • When the installation is complete, double-click the HijackThis© icon on your Desktop
  • Select "Do a system scan and save the Logfile"
  • When the scan is completed, Notepad will launch with the log.   Please UNcheck Word Wrap in Notepad (Click Format > UNcheck Word Wrap)
  • Do not fix anything that you see in the log. (Scanning will not make any changes to your computer.  Most of what is found is harmless or even required.)
  • Copy/Paste the log here.  (Select Edit > Select All > Edit Copy)
[/list]

R-C, thanks for the tip on how to deal with antivirusxp. I will remember that!

As Spybot is scanning, a running list of the files appears in the frame's taskbar area.  The file names I listed were ones that appeared there for a longtime during the scan.

The CA scan I ran was totally clean.

Hi, pastywhitegurl.  Welcome to WebGarden's subforum.

Your logs look pretty good but there is one item that I cannot find anything on so would like to take this to another level.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

!!! IMPORTANT !!!   Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.  The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note:  If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, a log will be produced.  Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

I don't think I can do the next step as I do not have the Windows XP Pro disc that was used to install xp on my machine to run the Windows Recovery Console. The person that assembled my machine did not give me the disc.

Is it possible that the Windows Recovery Console is already on my machine? If so, where would I look for it?

I'm also nervous about turning off my anti-virus for any length of time.  My computer is networked with another one in our house...would that affect the other computer?  This is sounding like a dangerous operation if I am needing a recovery console. (I'm sorry if these are dumb questions.)

Hi, pastywhitegurl.

If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.  If it is not installed, ComboFix will download the correct version and install it prior to cleaning.

That said, as it turns out, Winchester73 located what I hadn't found when researching -- which was why I suggested ComboFix.  What I was questioning is actually part of SysInternals.

So, you are off the hook -- with this machine except for just a small cleanup.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following and press "Fix Checked":

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Since another machine is networked, I suggest that you scan that machine with MBAM and let us know if there are any problems.

Can you tell me what you think that 02-BHO.... file is, please?

This whole post was started because of the file names I saw in the Spybot scan. I'd still like to know what those files are and what they are for. I don't seem to have anything affecting my computer function that would suggest any slowing down or redirecting.

You don't have to have the xp disc, if you follow the directions through combo fix it links to where you can get it online for your version of OS, it is actually a good idea to install the Recovery console should you ever need it in the future you have it.  But looks like you don't have to do that now so you are clear.

it sounds to me like you were watching spybot do the scan and it was showing its database of what it has listed to look for??? I don't think it was seeing that stuff on your pc because believe me it would have shown up on these logs and your pc would not be functioning if you had all that crud on it LOL.

Is that what was going by during the scan, what it was looking for?  I couldn't find any documentation about that display to say what it was one way or the other.

And BTW, I've never had that Windows2008Antivirus screen ever pop up again after that first time.

Thank you, everyone, who is trying to help me here. :)

Be assured that that is the case. The scan was displaying the names of the files that it was checking for, like it was ticking them off a list. You now have one of the best tools on the market installed on your machine - MBAM. Registering (buying) MBAM will activate the real time protection module that will protect your computer even further in future (and no, I don't have shares in MBAM!).

In this case, the "no file" at the end of the line means that this is an orphaned entry.  This BHO was part of Windows Live Messenger and is no longer present, it was left behind when the program was removed, updated, whatever.  Specifically, it was the Windows Live Call HoverToCall class BHO, which is a legitimate item (well, at least, if it was there it would be).

It is perfectly safe to have HJT delete that item.  It is mostly a matter of clean-up and tidying things.  Leaving it alone won't cause any problems since it isn't there.  Your choice.
