I am having the same problem, and I have done everything they said to do, but what do I do with the results?  How can I tell what to remove?

Hey tcarver!
Welcome to LandzDown  :)

Please confirm you have followed the instructions provided here: http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0

If so, copy & paste the requested 3 logs in a reply, with some feedback on how your computer is doing.

Running AVG Anti-Spyware & the SmitfraudFix per those instructions will "remove" infected files for you.
However, please do not attempt to fix anything with HijackThis until you are instructed to do so.  Most of the HJT log entries are critical to the proper functioning of your computer.

Be sure to ask any questions if you have troubles getting to the last step:
Quote
G. Create a topic of your own and copy/paste the following logs:

    * C:\rapport.txt
    * AVG Anti-Spyware log
    * HijackThis log

Hi, tcarver.  Sorry for the wrong referral link. I must have given the link from one of the merged threads.  Let's see if we can finish the cleanup painlessly.  Since you will not be connected to the internet during part of this process, you may want to print the instructions or copy them to your desktop.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe .  Save it to your Desktop.

Run ATF Cleaner
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, if found, and press "Fix Checked":

O21 - SSODL: System - {0B40D481-3315-487A-9385-CB9B9471EDA9} - dgflib.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: ieupdater (Microsoft IE Updater) - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ieupdate.exe (file missing)

Restart in Normal Mode and double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop.  Choose "Do a system scan and save logfile".
  • Post the new HijackThis log here as a reply
  • Any reason why you haven't installed XP Service Pack 2 yet?
  • Do you have the Symantec Suite that includes a firewall?
  • Finally, how is your computer now?

Hi, tcarver.

In answer to the Service Pack 2 question:  This was my sons Computer I bought about 3 yrs ago and the computer had a virus and shut everything down , so I took it to Circuit City, bought the Disks to reinstall the operating system and they said I could not get the Service Pack 2, or even upgrade to it.
Something is wrong there.  I find it difficult to believe that Circuit City could pull that off.  If Circuit City sold you the CD's for XP, you would have to received a license key with the package.  Then the license key from the CD had to be activated.  See http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_facts.mspx

I believe Belarc Advisor can retrieve the license key.  See this thread for information on Belarc Advisor:  http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=603.msg44774#new .  Give that a try and let me know if you are successful getting the key.  You may even have a sticker that came with the CD's with instructions to place it on the computer -- or it could be with the instruction manual that came with the CD's.

That service is still there.  I should have known it would be.  Let's see a Startup Log, please:

To generate a Startup List:
  • Open Hijackthis, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Next to "Generate StartupList log", place a check next to "List also minor sections" (full) and "List empty sections (complete).
  • Then click "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click "Yes" to the box that pops-up.
  • Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears to this topic as well as a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi, tcarver.  As a Teammate ( ) reminded me, you can order the CD for SP2.  He said he got his within 2 weeks.

From http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is a free update for Windows XP. It offers enhancements and better protection against viruses, hackers, and worms.

The latest Service Pack for Windows XP—Service Pack 2 (SP2)—is all about security, and it’s one of ... If you cannot download SP2 via Microsoft Update, you can order it on CD.

Order link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Hi, tcarver.  I've identified a nasty infection on your son's computer and need to see if there is anything else hiding.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running as that may cause it to stall.
,

Take a walk through the "Security Garden" -- Where Everything is Coming up Roses!

Remember - A day without laughter is a day wasted.
May the wind sing to you and the sun rise in your heart.

Hi, tcarver.  That didn't do it.  I've been doing some research and it appears to be a couple different files, one of which is active the other just "sitting there".  In researching, I've seen where AVG did remove the active ntio256.sys file.  Here's what I'd like you to do.

First, update AVG Anti-Spyware and go back to the original instructions you followed for AVG if you forgot (
http://www.landzdown.com/index.php?topic=11024.0).  As indicated in that link, scan with AVG in safe mode, removing everything found.  Restart in normal mode and  download CCleaner v1.36.430 - Slim from http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx  .

Instructions for using CCleaner:[list=1]
  • Close all open programs, including Internet Explorer, Fire Fox and any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Launch CCleaner and under Options > Advanced > UNcheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • To protect logon cookies that you wish to retain, under Options > Cookies.  Select and using the arrow move those cookies to the "Cookies to keep" column.
  • Then select the following items[list=a]
  • In the Windows Tab:
    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section except Windows Log Files.
  • In the Applications Tab:
    • Clean all in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Please UNcheck "Utilities" (i.e., Ad-Aware, ewido and other security program logs.)
  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit.
  • Shutdown/restart the computer.
Now, I want to see whether AVG got rid of that file and what GMER calls it.  So, next, please go here and download GMER:  http://www.gmer.net/

Unzip GMER to your desktop and double-click gmer.exe to open it.

Scan the system for rootkits using GMER. Run gmer.exe, select Rootkit tab and click the "Scan" button.
Please copy the results here using the Copy button.

I'll be away from the computer all day tomorrow.
