Hi, tcarver.  There are components that are targeted by the tool below.  Let's see if that gives us some working room.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Let's get these out of the way first.  I've been ignoring them to get to the more serious issues.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.  Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode.  Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Now, I would like to check something else, please.  Download FileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:
  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Directory"
    • Enter Drive eg.. C:\
  • In the box labeled "File"
    • Enter the file notepad.exe
  • Now click on the "Search" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • A Notepad will open up.  Please copy the entire contents of the Notepad and paste them here.
  • NOTE: The notepad is saved on your C:\ drive as "Export.txt"
Please include a fresh HijackThis log along with the Export.txt.

Yup, that is good.  The usual excecution of Notepad is from C:\Windows, although sys32 is also acceptable.  I just wanted to confirm that it wasn't a trojan. 

How is your son's computer working now?

Hi, tcarver. 

At long last -- and I thank you for your patience as until we finally got to the bottom of the problem -- it does indeed appear that all is well.  My only concern is, seeing how out of date your son's computer was when we started, that the computer get the necessary security updates so you will not be faced with multiple infections like this again. 

First, it would be wise to ensure automatic updates are turned on.  See Microsoft KB 306525 if you have any problems with the settings.

Next, SunJava is still out of date, making the computer vulnerable to a Vundo infection.  Please see the instructions in my blog for updating and removing vulnerable versions:  http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2006/09/sunflowers-and-sunjava-update.html

We had you install quite a few software programs during this process.  I would suggest keeping ATF-Cleaner and running it periodically to clean the temp files. 

You can uninstall SmitfraudFix, GMER, Blacklight and SDFix since they would most likely be out of date if needed again.

I would suggest you install and update SpywareBlaster to help prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software.  SpywareBlaster will need periodic updating.

A favorite free program is WinPatrol, which includes the features described here.

Lastly, I would suggest a quick run through Secunia Software Inspector:

One last thing (yes, I know I said that before ;) ).  A team mate pointed out Market Browser.  It is advised that you uninstall this program from your computer as it is either malware, installs malware, or is bundled with malware.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and look for an uninstaller for MarketBrowser.  It is located in C:\Program Files\MarketBrowser.  If no uninstaller is found, boot to Safe Mode and delete the MarketBrowser folder.  Also remove the following with HijackThis:
