Very nasty virus
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:18:31 PM »
I did a search on MSN for a few problems relating to a virus I apparently picked up.

The topic is here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/comphelp/msg0900574717725.html

That site led me here.

I have this same virus or something like it.  My home page, being iGoogle, gets a HTTP error.  When I visit google.com, it is a blank page with 'hi' written on it.  I cannot connect to trend micro (anything), I cannot connect to any antivirus store or site that would allow me to scan for a virus/malware.  I tried updating the Norton software, as to purchase a subscription, but the site would not load.

I am usually very careful, I do no fishy downloading.  I clicked on a link which I believed to be safe (as I clicked said link before without problems).  Windows Defender popped up with a security warning.  I clicked "remove" or "block" the threats.  It did so, and in the defender window, it said the problem was resolved.  I did a Norton scan and it detected a "high" level threat, and it said it was resolved.

However, I still am unable to connect to the sites, or access google/google talk.

I do not have HJT or any other security measures outside of Norton which is outdated from about 8 months ago.

I would really really appreciate help.  Thank you.

edit: I'm running Windows Vista home edition.

Please can you Download random's system information tool (RSIT) and save it to your desktop.
Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
Click Continue at the disclaimer screen,
Once it has finished, there will be two logs open.
Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt
Note,
The  info.txt will be minimized on your Desktop.

GR@PH;<'S   :Hammys pint:

Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

Hi, d2b.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Windows Defender and your outdated Norton took care of part of the problem however the reason you are unable to connect to the sites, or access google/google talk is because all Google domains are being redirected to Estonia.

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
Right-click and select Open > Open with Notepad
Leaving only this:

leaving only:

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply and a fresh HijackThis log.

Double-click the HijackThis icon on your desktop (or launch from the TrendMicro Folder)
  • Select "Do a system scan and save the Logfile"
  • When the scan is completed, Notepad will launch with the log. Please UNcheck Word Wrap in Notepad (Click Format > UNcheck Word Wrap)

Include the MBAM and HijackThis logs in your reply.  If you cannot access the MBAM download link, please let us know.

If  you elect to renew the Norton subscription, please beware of the changes in the latest version: http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/2009/03/recommendation-replace-norton.html

Should you elect to replace Norton, see this list of Windows Vista compatible antivirus software:  http://vistabookmarks.blogspot.com/2007/02/vista-compatible-antivirus-software.html .  My favorite is ESET and I am currently running ESET Smart Security V4 on this Windows Vista machine.

Hi, d2b.  I'll take a look at your log this evening.

In the meantime, when I provided the instructions for JavaRa, I forgot to mention that with Windows Vista you need to right-click the JavaRa.exe and Run as Administrator, accepting the elevation prompt, for JavaRa to successfully remove the vulnerable versions of SunJava.

Hi, d2b.

With regard to your question about passwords, it certainly wouldn't hurt to do that periodically anyway.  Make sure that you don't use the same password for your bank as you do for your email or any site memberships.  Don't fall into the trap of using common terminology for your password, pet names, street where you live, family member names.

After you re-run JavaRa as administrator (sorry about that), let's do a bit of cleanup.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.  Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.  Please post a fresh HijackThis log and confirm all is well.
