Norton Warning About New Global Ransomware Attack - "Petya"
« on: August 02, 2017, 12:31:42 AM »
August 2nd, and I just received a notice from my Norton account that there is a new global ransomware attack called "Petya". I may have missed it, yet has this already been discussed here at LD? Anything extra we should know/worry about?

Wow, Norton just alerted you about this now?  :o

The real ransomware called Petya is more than a year old: https://blog.malwarebytes.com/threat-analysis/2016/04/petya-ransomware/

Let's hope they mean the newer NonPetya that was derived from the old one (and is only slightly over a month old): https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2017/06/petya-esque-ransomware-is-spreading-across-the-world/

Well, it might be Norton just doing some advertising. ;)

That aside, I remember new ransomware arising this year or last year, but the name was different. I forget the name, but it wasn't 'Petya'. Oh well. Life goes on. Rock and roll. ;)

WannaCry ransomware was in June. I was reading yesterday that Merck, the drug company, still hasn't fully recovered from a June attack.
