Is there a tie between Kaspersky and Russian intelligence? Two weeks later there is a steady drip drip drip ...

... not trying to start a political discussion, just pointing out this issue has been in the news a lot of late.

To be honest I don't know. I haven't seen anything that proves or disproves it. Kapersky has offered up it's code for evaluation. I personally run away from political scenarios.

Does MS, Symantec and other companies have a relationship with the US government? I can't answer that one either.
.
If you buy or use the products, then you would have a relationship of sorts with the company.

If you're privy to the kind of information that a foreign government or business competitor wants to steal, you shouldn't be keeping it on your personal computer anyway.

IMHO, for a home computer, I'd judge the software it by it's reputation and effectiveness.

For a "company computer" follow company policy.
For a government owned computer, follow their protocol.
