Unblock a cookie by Win Patrol?
« on: December 14, 2011, 03:41:50 PM »
I installed WinPatrol and it alerted me that there was a cookie and did I want to block it?
I did, but was curious enough to write the information down first in case it was something I needed in order to access the internet...or maybe even IE9?  (I've been using Firefox.)

Cookie name: idsbho
From: login.live.com
After a bunch of alphanumerical gibberish: (service pack1)
Not a Third Party Cookie.  In Session.

Could this have been something that Windows techs use that allows them access to networks by their clients?

Is there a way to unblock the cookie (*if* needed) other than by doing a restore point and reinstalling WinPatrol along with the blocked cookie?

I'll wait before installing anything else until I find out more and its less painful to do that restore point.

Hi, ComicsLover.

First things first, WinPatrol doesn't alert for cookies.  You can create a filter for certain cookies, view, delete checked (or, if you prefer, delete unchecked) cookies.

Did you create a filter with WinPatrol?  If so, all you need to do is click the filter to select it and then click the button to Remove the filter.

I didn't have time to do anything.  The pop up came on just seconds after I finished installing WinPatrol.
"There's this cookie, do you want me to block it or accept it?" kind of thing.

Am now in the Cookies tab section and see what you mean, but since the cookie was blocked it looks to be irretrievable....I don't see a function for unblocking it as it isn't listed.  Checked both Mozilla and IE lists.

Also now need to find out why cookies I told Firefox to block appeared on WinPatrol's Mozilla Cookies list!

Nope.  It was not a cookie that Scottie asked if you wanted to accept or block.  It would have been an ActiveX component, a Start-up entry or an IE Helper from some software program you installed.

As to any cookies that WinPatrol found on the Mozilla cookie list, what happens if you close Firefox, view cookies with WinPatrol select remove all -- or at least the cookie you want blocked by Firefox?  Re-launch Firefox.  Is the cookie still listed?

I put the cookie back....it's part of Windows Live Writer.  However, I did disable that Add-On as I won't possibly be using it for a long time if ever.  So many things to learn on Windows!

Which brings up Restore Points.
I did one when a download went wonky and that must have also reset my Preferences so that the cookie settings went back to allowing everything rather than my preference of Ask Me What To Do.  I could have sworn I'd set all Preferences before that Restore Point I went back to.

Adding "Look up just what exactly a Restore Point does in regards to different types of files" to my list.  Also putting up a sticky on "Check the darn settings each time, regardless, stupid!" and "turn off the wireless Mouse before going to work, idiot."

Mama warned me that comics would rot my brain.  She must have been a genius

I'm not sure if this is the issue but there have been changes to how cookies are stored.

This is actually a change made in a recent Windows update by Microsoft and has broken our cookie filter functionality.

Microsoft describes their change here
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals/archive/2011/08/12/internet-explorer-9.0.2-update-changes-file-protocol-and-cookie-naming.aspx

I do have a way to work around this change but I can’t say when a fix will be made available.  Hopefully soon.
