I just got a notice from Scotty that listed rthdcpl.exe and this message:

rthdcpl.exe

WinPatrol has detected a program previously set to automatically run on start   up no longer has this feature. it may be this option was changed or the entire program has been removed.

As I clicked through the prompt, all these were listed as well, one at a time:
alcmtr.exe

c:\program files\avira\antivir desktop\avgnt.exe
avgnt.exe

c:\windows\samsung\panelmgr\ssmmgr.exe
ssmmgr.exe

c:\program files\billp studios\winpatrol\winpatrol.exe

c:\windows\system32\NVCLP.DLL

c:\windows\system32\nvmctray.dll

c:\program files\nvidia corporation\nview\nwiz.exe

c:\program files\quicktime\QTTASK.exe

c:\documents and settings\helena\desktop\desktopsv.01.exe

c:\program files\windows live\messenger\msnmsgr.exe

c:\program files\common files\nero\lib\nmbgmonitor.exe
{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA

C:\program files\kodak\kodak share button app\kgshare_app.exe

c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe

I checked a couple of the programs..the exe files are still in the folders, so something turned something off apparently.
I saw a report on rthdcpl.exe that said there was a problem with it after a windows update for XP users, so I checked my Windows updates and nothing has been installed since July 11.   My Avira scan this morning was clean.

I went to :

    Go to Start
    Click on Run
    Type msconfig
    Press Enter
and looked at the start up list. All the above items were checked.

I'm afraid to reboot my computer now.  What should I do?

ok new devlopment.

WinPatrol crashed and I can't restart it from the program menu.

So this makes me think that the problem is some WinPatrol glitch.

Corrine:
Do you have the latest version of WinPatrol installed?  WinPatrol 25.0.2012.5 was released July 13, 2012.   You can get it from http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html.

If you already had the latest version, try uninstalling and reinstalling it again.  Should you continue having problems, you may need to run the WinPatrol Removal Program, also available from http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html.  (The WinPatrol Removal program will remove all files and registry entries created by installing WinPatrol. After running this file it will be removed automatically the next time you reboot.  If you have a PLUS account, note your user name/code prior to running the removal program.)

ah. ok.  I think I did update it, but I couldn't find the version number, so just to be sure, I thought I would go ahead and run the update installer.

I downloaded and installed the update over my old program.  Seemed to go fine, but the scotty icon on my taskbar is still not the one in the round blue button as before. it is a black silouette Scotty with a gold and white something by the front paws, and though it is giving me the "Scotty is checking for unauthorized changes" upon hover message, the icon does not bring up the console when clicked as before. I can access it on the Start > Programs list  though.

So I went to Start > Programs and ran the uninstall next to the WinPatrol program entry.
Still nothing.
Then I went to the Control Panel and removed 3 instances of Win Patrol. One was from 2009.     I then ran the installer once again.  Same result.  Broken scotty in the task bar. WinPatrol.exe is running in my task manager.

I'm thinking it may be ok after a reboot, but then.... is it safe to reboot yet?  Or should I run the WinPatrol  Removal program first?

1. I couldn't find the version number
Assuming you can open WinPatrol, look on the PLUS tab.  It will display the version number, the current one being 25.0.2012.5 : 25.0.2012.5

2. the scotty icon on my taskbar is still not the one in the round blue button as before. it is a black silouette Scotty with a gold and white something by the front paws
Again, assuming you can open WinPatrol, go to the OPTIONS tab, and UNcheck  the box marked Display original Scotty Taksbar icon.
[The checked/"original" is the "black silouette Scotty", the UNchecked/"new" is the round blue button.]
