I take it that System File Checker didn't find any corrupt files.  I should have thought to have you follow that up with a DISM to see if it finds errors.  Let's try that now.

Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin).
Type the following command and press Enter:  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

When it finishes, if no errors, just close the command prompt window.  However, if it finds errors, at the top left of the command prompt window, right-click the small C:\ image.  When the menu opens, select "Edit" > "Select All".  Right-click the image a second time and  "Edit" > "Copy".  Paste the results here.

Let's see if Windows Defender is miss-reading Spybot - Search and Destroy (which by the way is enabled but shown in the log as Out of date).  Please try disabling all features of SpyBot and see if that allows you to activate Windows Defender.  If that doesn't work, try uninstalling Spybot, restart the computer and then see if you can activate Windows Defender.  If that works, download and reinstall Spybot.

Thanks for the ping Corrine Agree with your approach - looks like Spybot Search and Destroy is registering as the active antimalware protection product on the system, and Windows Defender won't offer real-time protection until it releases hold (or until it's out of date to the point that Windows kick in Windows Defender to start protecting).

Regards,
Aaron

It seems to be correct. When I uninstalled S&D, Windows Defender immediately said it was activated.
I reinstalled S&D and I got a message telling me that Windows Defender was inactivated again.

Does S&D have more usefull tools than WD? Or is it the other way around?

I used to run
Spybot S&D
Spywareblaster
Malwarebytes
Is it ok to run all of them?

I also had AVG free edition. Maybe it's better to use AVG instead of WD?

Mimmi,

[I typed my message before your latest post.  But perhaps what I have written is still relevant.]

Which version of Spybot 2.4.40 are you using?  There is a Free version, a Home version, and a Professional version.  The Home and the Professional are paid versions and they appear to have antivirus software built-in.  So if you paid for Spybot, installed it, and did not somehow disable the antivirus feature during the installation then it is possible that Windows is correctly reading that you have an antivirus installed.  As both Corrine and Aaron have guessed (probably after much perplexity) this might be why you cannot activate Windows Defender.  (Spybot is generally known as a free anti-malware application, and it is not widely known to non-users that the newer paid versions include antivirus features.)

I have been a long time user of the free versions of Spybot and I currently have both the 1.6.2 and 2.4.40 versions.  But I am not sure how the paid version is set up.  I suspect that if you launch the Spybot start center (in "Advanced User Mode" and make sure that you have "administrator privileges") and click on the "Settings" module you might be able to deactivate the antivirus feature.  Alternately maybe in the paid versions there is an "Antivirus" module that can be deactivated directly.

So follow Corrine's instructions and first try deactivating or disabling either the antivirus feature or all the features of Spybot if possible.  If this does not work then uninstall Spybot as Corrine suggested.  But if you have a paid version make sure that you save any possible license keys that you might need to reinstall the software.

Beyond that follow whatever Corrine suggests.

[Addendum:  here is a link to a Spybot forum post that might shed some light on your situation and what to do about it:  " https://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?74123-Bit-defender-Antivirus-Question ".  It appears from the answering post that the antivirus feature is linked to "Live Protection".  Here is another link that explains how to disable Live Protection:  " https://www.safer-networking.org/faq/how-do-i-disable-live-protection/ ".  Both of these posts refer to the paid versions; the Free version of 2.4.40 which I use does not have "Live Protection."  So if you are using a free version then these posts and my comments above will not apply to you.]

[[ Further addendum after your latest post:  Spybot 2.4.40 has a lot of tools that do not exist in Windows Defender.  Its features overlap with both Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster, but it also has more and different features.   (I cannot speak for Adwcleaner since I do not have the program.  I do have and use all of the others.)  HOWEVER unless you are using Spybot as real-time "Live Protection" then it is simply another tool on your computer to use when you need it.  In other words you do not have to use the real-time features and if you do not then it is not an active program and should not conflict with others.  So it is worth keeping the program but perhaps not necessary to use its Live Protection features.  Also while I do not know for sure because I only have a free version of Malwarebytes if you are using a real-time protection feature in Malwarebytes then using the real-time protection feature of Spybot is probably redundant.  But having both programs on your computer to be used when necessary would still possibly be useful provided you have the adequate disk space.]]

[[ As for using AVG instead of Windows Defender there is probably no "right" answer to this question.  Many people on this forum say that the newest version of Windows Defender is sufficient for antivirus protection.  I will defer to their thoughts along these lines.  At the same time though on my Acer notebook with Windows 10 I am still using the free version of Avira antivirus.  The free versions of AVG, Avast, and BitDefender are basically all comparable to the free version of Avira.  It simply becomes a matter of preference as to which one a person might choose.  I continue to use Avira Free because I have done so for more than 8 years and it has worked for me from Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10.  But if for some reason Avira no longer worked, I would also feel very comfortable switching to the latest version of Windows Defender.]]

[[ Other comments:  keep in mind that there are antivirus programs, anti-malware programs, and some that combine both.  The problem that you are having with Spybot is because the paid version now combines its real-time anti-malware feature with an antivirus feature.  Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program without antivirus and thus should not (under normal circumstances) conflict with antivirus programs.  The newest version of Windows Defender is also both an anti-malware and antivirus program.  So it will not run or activate if you have another antivirus program on your computer.  Usually anti-malware programs do not conflict with each other even if they are running in real-time.  But there may not be a lot of extra benefit to running several anti-malware programs in real-time.  (Ask around on this forum {maybe in another thread} for further guidance as to how much and what kinds of protection are needed.]]

Excellent information, v_v.  Thank you!

Mimmi,

I used to run
Spybot S&D
Spywareblaster
Malwarebytes
Is it ok to run all of them?
Spybot S&D:

First, please read v_v's post carefully.  In the event you are using the paid/licensed "Home Edition and above of Spybot +AV include dedicated antivirus detection with multiple definition updates a day.", it is not compatible with Windows Defender and is already providing antivirus protection.  Thus, you need to choose between the two programs, or if you wish to move to a free program, wait until the license expires and then switch.  However, since you had been using AVG, I suspect that the issue is with the Live Protection module.  See the instructions v_v provided a link to on How do I disable Live Protection?.  You will then be able to activate Windows Defender while still using the other features of Spybot.

Spywareblaster:

Since the update to version 5.5 of Spywareblaster, only new Internet Explorer (IE/ActiveX) updates have been included.  Since Firefox is your primary browser and you also have Microsoft Edge as an alternative, I personally don't see a continued need for Spywareblaster and personally stopped using it some years ago.

Malwarebytes:

I have Malwarebytes Premium installed and it does not interfere with Windows Defender.  I have it set for a weekly scan although it has never found anything.

AdwCleaner is fine for periodic checking, although, with any security program, be sure to get the latest update.

Other:

In place of SpywareBlaster, a separate HOSTS file program and for use as an ad-blocking program, I prefer uBlock Origin.  It is an add-on for Firefox and is also available as an extension for Microsoft Edge.  Satrow pointed me to dark_moon's settings for uBlock Origin in his post on the Pale Moon forum, which are good suggestions.  You can also select a HOSTS file as shown in the second image (click the image to see it full size).  As a point of interest, hpHosts lists are an essential part of the Malwarebytes Web Access Control (MWAC) in Malwarebytes Premium.  The example settings are here:  Ghostery Replacement - Pale Moon forum

Firefox:  uBlock Origin :: Add-ons for Firefox
Microsoft Edge:  uBlock Origin – Windows Apps on Microsoft Store

Please let us know what you end up doing.

I have SpywareBlaster 5.5 on both a Windows XP desktop and a Windows 10 notebook, and it still shows that it is providing support for several browsers just like it always has.  (See the attachment below)

Am I missing something?

Yes But...
I can't recall the last time an update included anything that was not for IE.

The "block list" for FireFox appears to be exactly the same as when I installed it.

Yes, it is still providing support but if you've been following the update topic here, you will have noticed that no new additions have been made to any browsers except Internet Explorer (ActiveX) since 2013.  I did find a listing for 3 restricted sites add December 28, 2014.

Corrine (and Pete),

I have not been following the "update topic" in detail.  I have noticed over the past few years that there have been fewer additions but I have not paid specific attention to the nature of the update additions.

Spybot also has a feature that provides immunization and during the same period I have noted fewer updates of its immunization database also.  So to me nothing about SpywareBlaster seemed amiss.  But Spybot still does occasionally have immunization updates and version 2.4 does seem to apply the immunization to the following browsers (on Windows XP):  Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, SeaMonkey, Pale Moon, K-Meleon, (chromium-based) Opera, and a Global (Hosts) file.  What this means in relation to SpywareBlaster I have not a clue!

Hi!
I've got the free version of Spybot S&D.

Windows Defender worked absolutely ok.... untill the very second I clicked on "update". Then again it says that I have another antivirusprogram on the pc. Is there any program hidden that I can't see? It's really confusing... Maybe I have to use some other program instead of S&D?
