Windows Update does work ??
« on: October 28, 2016, 09:43:54 PM »
My HP laptop is using Windows Vista, my Norton A/V is up to date, and Pale Moon is browser 26.5.0
The last time my Windows Update worked was on 3/6/2016!!!  I've tried on the last three months but it does not do anything.

On my laptop I have Process Explorer running and you should see 50% CPU is idle and 50% is burning cycles.

I need some help, please!

Windows Vista computers require Service Pack 2 to get the latest updates from Windows Update.  Before going any further, please confirm that is what you have installed.

Also, can you explain further what you mean by 'does nothing' when you try to manually update.

Thank you for your reply.  Here's my attachment showing Service Pack 2.

When I try to Update Windows  (see attachment) my modem does not talk to Windows Update.  Earlier I sent a attachment showing 50 percent of my CPU cycles go to svchost PID 1104.  It shows under sub-heading Windows Update.

If it is any consolation, you are not alone. I receive a paid newsletter, WindowsSecrets and when one someone mentioned no updates since April on his Vista computer, the editor of the newsletter checked and two of his computers had not received updates since April either.

Since the newsletter is paid, I'll have to search elsewhere to see if I can dig up some free information that I can post here.

s KB3145739 already installed? If not, you can try to download and install it manually.
This worked for someone.

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3145739
32 bit it is the 2nd item
64 bit it is the 11th item

The next update to check and perhaps manually install is KB3153199.
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3153199
32bit 4th item
64bit 13th item

There are probably more. Post and let us know if those two allowed any updates to install.

I tried your first link and it gave an error.  (see the attachment)
I tried your second link and it gave a similar error.

Back to square one.

I'm finding information for resetting Windows updates components. The problem I'm encountering is Vista is never mentioned!

Are you using Palemoon as your browser?

See if IE will work.

First http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Rss.aspx?q=KB3145739

then http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Rss.aspx?q=KB3153199

I'll keep looking to see if I can find reset instructions for Vista.

I also found a page to reset IE and Vista is mentioned.

Scroll down to the Vista section on this page http://wu.krelay.de/en/
Download the two updates there. Will they install?

This are the same two updates that I posted about previously but not from the catalog. See if you can download (April 2016)
32 bit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51871
64 bit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51908

(May 2016)
32 bit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52238
64bit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=52217

If the download links above work, I will try and figure out what updates Vista needs from April 2016 through October 2016 and see about the manual downloads.

Note: It would help me a lot if you mentioned what Vista you are running 32 bit or 64 bit. That would cut my searching and link posting by 50%.

Thanks for all your information. It's alot to understand.

My laptop has 32 bit Vista.
It has IE 9.  I'm using it now.  It shows Javascript is disabled and I don't know how enable it since I use Palemoon.  Can you tell what to do, please.

Earlier I got KB3145739 to install.  After that used to disable automatic Windows Updates.  (Found it on the bleepingcomputer.com)  Now it's burning cycles.

Thanks again.

To enable javascript in IE 9 follow the guide here:
https://www.whatismybrowser.com/guides/how-to-enable-javascript/internet-explorer

After you have the updates downloaded, you can disable it again. Keep the site bookmarked so you can undo the steps to disable it.

I'm not clear what you are trying to say.
Is it trying to find updates or not?

Thanks again!

Here is a jpg of my Updates (including Vista updates).

On the wu.krelay.de/en/ site I 'disabled the Automatic Updates' or "Never check for updates".

Otherwise, Process Explorer shows that 50% of the CPU time was used for looking 'updates' --  my on language of "burning cycles".

You have two failed updates. KB3148198 for IE 9 and a security update KB3146963

The update I see for Vista's IE 9 in October is this
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53967
the number doesn't match yours. I'd try and install this and not the one that failed. I'll do some searching to see if I can discover anything on 3148198. Whoa, that is one from April 2016. probably the one from October supercedes the one from April.

The other one is also from April.

Yes-two failed updates and one I canceled (it wasn't updated.)  Remember I was using Pale Moon browser and that could have been the problem.

Back in 10-29-2016 I printed a several hardcopies of the updates that I need run, if I could my updates to work.  I have seven for 3/8/2016; six for 4/12/2016 and 14 for 5/10/16.

Here is the first one.  Maybe with this list you won't need to do any searching.

Let me know.  Thanks again.

I'm not listing them in the order they are listed. I'll list the critical one first
3140735 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51348

The next are important
3140709 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51316

3139940 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51269

3139914 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51339

3139398 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51383

3135982 NET 2.0 SP2
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=51462

You can hide 3118401 it was offered several times and has to do with Win 10.

Important: Check your update settings and under Recommended updates
Make sure the box in front of Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates is unchecked/unticked.
I had all my Windows 7 computers set up and nothing breaks if you don't install the "optional" updates. If the updates are Critical or Important, you will be offered them.
