installed adaware, can't connect
« on: August 25, 2005, 08:36:18 PM »
Hello all,
I recently installed Adaware SE and now cannot connect to my DSL home portal. When I did a scan, the majority of the problems found were cookies, but I went ahead and let it remove everything it found. The computer is Win 98. Any ideas how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Hi, amberj46.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

It appears that not all of th problems fixed were cookies.  There must have been an LSP (Layered Service Provider) in the mix there.  First try restoring what was quarantined.  Unless you have changed the relevant setting, Ad-Aware SE automatically creates a "quarantine" of objects removed. This is a bit like the Recycle Bin in Windows.

On the opening Ad-Aware screen, click "Open quarantine list", and you will see a list of all the quarantines that have been made. Double or right-clicking on the individual quarantine files will allow you to view the objects contained in that quarantine. You can also try and locate the relevant one by reference to the Creation date.  You can reteive the removed objects by highlighting the relevant quarantine, and clicking "Restore".

Note that this will restore all the objects contained in the quarantine.  Please run a full system scan and post the resutls and we will assist you.

If that does not restore the connection, please see the following KB Article and use O^E's winsock fix:

Lavasoft Knowledge Base Article 03041803
Unable to Access the Internet or LAN After Removal
http://www.lavasofthelp.com/articles/v6/03/04/1803.html

SYMPTOM
After removing certain detected objects, you may not be able to connect to any Internet sites.  You may also not be able to access computers over a local area network (LAN).

CAUSE
This can result from the use of an older build of Ad-aware with a newer reference file, or by using the latest build of Ad-aware with an older reference file.

RESOLUTION
If you made a quarantine before removing, then you can restore the quarantine, which should correct this issue.  Ensure you have the latest build and reference file, and scan again.

If it still disrupts your connection, notify us at our support forums at http://www.lavasoftsupport.com.

If you did not make a quarantine prior to removal, a program is available which can correct this issue.  Download it from the following web location:

PREVENTION
Make sure you are using the latest version, build, and reference file before performing a scan.

Okay, I restored the quarantine file, then ran another scan. But this time, I chose all non-cookie items to be removed. I rebooted, but still not able to connect through the home portal. I can't post the scan results because I can't get on the internet on the desktop, but the items removed during the 2nd scan were Cometsystems, Marketscore (Netsetter), Alexa and Broadcastpc.

In the article that you listed, it mentioned using the latest version, etc. to prevent this from happening. I just downloaded the software this afternoon and checked for updates before doing the first scan. Any more suggestions that might help? Thanks for responding!

when aaw does a scan it saves it !
so you can get the scanlog and put it on a floppy and use the computer you are using now to post it here ;-)

click the gear in the top right corner of the first aaw screen
on the nest window that comes up look down towards the bottom
at "write logfiles to"
go there and copy out the logfile you ran and post it here!

did you do the winsock fix that corrine mentioned?

Hi, amberj46.  From a computer that can connect to the 'net, download the winsock fix linked above to a diskette or CD.

First, restore the quarantine file again but please do NOT remove those objects.  Leave them and try connecting.  If you still cannot connect, install and run the winsock fix on the infected computer.  That should restore your connection.  Then post a full system logfile but do NOT remove anything.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. My son is flying home from Hawaii for a visit so, obviously, I'll be spending a lot of time with him. I haven't seen him since his squadron returned from Iraq so he's due for a big hug from Mom! So I'll be working on this in bits and pieces next week. Didn't want you to think I had given up on this...
