Thanks for that.

As for the Registry, not sure that would even be in there as it is the installation applet doing the installing, not Registry settings.

Thanks v_v. I'll have to remember to click the Advanced Options the next time an upgrade appears.

Slightly off topic:

I just want to confirm that MBAM Premium 4.2.0 still "plays nice" with Defender, if you tell it not to register with the MS security center.

Cablevision/Altice decided it would be a good idea to emulate Verison FIOS and charge extra for the heretofore "included" McAfee security suite. I decided to use Defender (aka Windows Security) instead.

Unlike previous instances, Defender did NOT automatically start realtime protection when I Uninstalled McAfee, until I changed the MBAM setting.

Can someone verify that they won't start "fighting" each other?

If you don't uncheck the option for Always Register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center, MBAM will take the role of the antivirus solution (and the antimalware solution too). That is why the Defender didn't start when you uninstalled McAfee. MBAM was acting like your antivirus+antimalware software.

The reason we have unchecked the specific option is to allow Defender to act as an antivirus solution and MBAM as an antimalware solution. And they play well like that.

That's what I was hoping for....
It didn't seem to be an issue with either McAfee, nor ESET in the past, and during previous brief periods while I was switching between them, Defender usually stepped in during the transition without any action on my part.... Just wanted to verify.

Malwarebytes 4.2.1 was offered to me this evening on one computer.

I remembered to click Advanced and didn't have to delete the desktop shortcut.

Offered to me today and installed successfully.   It always warns that computer may restart, so I always clean up my work and make a restore point,  but the computer has not been restarting when I do the updates.   What is it that triggers a restart?  Maybe I don't need to do all that preparation?

I get the same thing about "might need to restart". If I remember correctly, the computer running Windows 7 Pro might have restarted.  Things in the Pro version seem to install differently than in the Home version computers.

That makes sense.   So my Premium MB on Win10 Pro  may never need to restart.

I seem to recall that when it is a major version update that it is does restart.  In looking at the initial post for version 4.0, note:

Quote
Malwarebytes 4.0 will automatically remove the old Anti-Malware, Anti-Exploit and Anti-Ransomware and upgrade them all to Malwarebytes 4.0.

In order to remove the old versions, obviously, the program will restart when the old versions have been upgraded.

Yes, I expect the MB program to restart.  Its the computer (Windows) rebooting that that doesn't always happen.

Version 4.2.1 was just offered to me tonight on my lapto and, yes, it did include a computer restart, although it didn't when my desktop was updated.  No clue why.

Yes, they play well together just fine. I am using Microsoft Defender (previously Windows Defender) and Malwarebytes Premium on 2 PCs and my notebook here with no problems.

It is important, however, to disable MBAM in the Security Center:
  • Open Malwarebytes.
  • Press the little gear at the top right.
  • Choose the Security tab.
  • Enable the three options under the title Scan options.
  • Disable the option under the title Widows Security Center.
