Scanning for rootkits takes a very long time and most certainly isn't necessary with daily scans, although Metallica may have another reason for not including rootkit scans as regularly scheduled scans.

Nope Corrine, you read my mind.  :D
Under normal circumstances it's a waste of time to scan for rootkits. Although it doesn't hurt to check once in a while, maybe every month or so.
Or when you are experiencing strange behavior, but it's obvious you will want to use the full potential in such a case.

Thanks for clearing that up.  I had the root kit scan ticked to ON as part of my daily scans.  They happen in the middle of the night, so I never noticed how long they take.  Just ran a manual scan with root kit scan turned off and it completed the scan in  8min 47 seconds.

When you say it takes a long time,  what more time does it normally add? Like hours?  If its not something that can be predicted, then I guess I could turn it back on just to see if its still scanning when I start using the computer in the morning. I've never really checked to see.

You can time it merely by selecting rootkit scan and doing a scan now.  :)

I always scan with rootkits checked. It takes 5.42 min
Unchecked 1.42 min.
For me 4 mins is not important.

OK, so ran the test with the root kit scan on.  It took roughly twice the time.

17min 35 sec.

Without:
8 min 47  sec.

I think I'm going to leave it on.

Time to get with the times and migrate to SSDs! ;) I've had Scan for Rootkits enabled for a long time and with an SSD scanning for rootkits takes a couple seconds. And entire threat scan, as seen in the log summary below, took just 2 minutes and 4 seconds.
