winpatrol will not start at login with UAC on (Windows 7)
« on: June 18, 2011, 03:13:59 AM »
Winpatrol Plus 20.5.2011, it won't start after a reboot.
When I turn off UAC, no problem.

So far the workaround with UAC on is to use schedule task at logon
using similar instruction to start peerblock, which also would not start for me.
http://www.peerblock.com/userguide/how_to_use/htu-useraccountcontrol

Is this just a bug with windows 7 and UAC ?
Any easier workaround, than creating schedule task ?

Other things I've tried without success.
I have set winpatrol to run as administrator,
I've uninstall/re-installed winpatrol
I've done the untick/tick "start winpatrol at startup"

Hi, john62.  Welcome to LandzDown!

When installing WinPatrol PLUS 20.5,2011, did you uninstall the previous version or install over the top?  Did the problem start with the update to this version?  Also, is your system 32- or 64-bit?

Hi Corrine ,
Its 32-bit OS, can't really be sure when the problem started,
its a new PC, with new winpatrol installation,  at first it was ok, winpatrol started after reboot.
as its always the first program I install.

The problem became noticeable after a few new programs where installed, and windows updates.
I noticed winpatrol (and peerblock) was missing after reboot.

I wish I could be more exact, e.g. which program and which windows update, but sorry I didn't notice
at the time

Anyone else have similar problems ? any other (easier) workarounds ?

thanks
John

Hi, John.

You have taken the same steps I would have recommended, including WinPatrol being the first program installed!  It was some time ago that I had a problem with WinPatrol at start-up.  I discovered that it was Windows Defender blocking it:  Scotty Is Back Where He Belongs!.

Other than checking firewall and other security program logs, the only other suggestion I have at the moment is a complete uninstall.  This would require noting your WinPatrol PLUS ID for adding after a fresh WinPatrol installation.

I created a How to, should you wish to go that route:  How to Completely Uninstall and Reinstall WinPatrol.

I haven't had a chance to thank everyone for their support yet but I might have a solution for this issue.

I don’t know how it happens but it sounds like you have multiple copies of WinPatrol in your Startup list. It's also possible that WinPatrolEx.exe was added to the startup list.  In the newer versions of WinPatrol I have implemented a quick fix.

Open up the main WinPatrol tabbed Interface.
Click on the Options tab.
You should see a check box that says, “Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts”
Just Unclick the box in front of this message.
Now click it again so the checkbox remains.

This action will remove the multiple copies of WinPatrol in the Startup List and initialize the correct startup setting.
----------------------------------
WinPatrol is split into two components to provide the best possible performance.

WinPatrol.exe is the small component which monitors for changes on your system. This is the program which displays the little Scotty in the taskbar and remains running in the background at all times. This component does not trigger or require UAC access so at boot up the UAC should never appear.
The only exception is if you set this file to "Run as Administrator". They Windows will trigger UAC.

When you double click on the little Scotty icon it launches our main tabbed interface or WinPatrol Explorer(WinPatrolEx.exe).  The program provides the main interface and allows you to review all your various programs.  When you click on "Close", this program is removed from memory so only the smallest required portion of WinPatrol is running. This component has the power to make configuration changes in the registry so it will always require UAC.

Thanks again,
Bill

Hi, Bill.

We are very proud to be able to provide a bit of help answering questions about WinPatrol here at LandzDown Forum.

As to John's problem, he did mention that "I've done the untick/tick "start winpatrol at startup".  He also indicated that he had uninstalled/reinstalled WinPatrol, thus my suggestion to try a clean install, removing all traces of WinPatrol.

I'm glad you provided the reminder about the two components of WinPatrol.  That question came up on another forum last week.  Your post serves as a reminder to add that information to the How To's, Tips & Information subforum so it doesn't get "lost".

pardon my slow update, only got to try it now.

I did the procedure above, and winpatrol didn't start after reboot
but after I unticked  "run as administrator" for winpatrol, then it started.

I think my problem started with peerblock, when it didn't start after
reboot I ticked winpatrol to run as administrator.  which nuked winpatrol starting.

In summary, I verified on another PC, if I tick winpatrol to run as administrator, it
won't start with UAC on.

C:\Program Files\BillP Studios\WinPatrol
right click winpatrol
->properties
->Compatibility
Privilege Level (at the bottom)
Run this program as an administrator

thanks everyone
John

Hi, John.

Thanks for getting back to us with your solution!  It makes sense too as WinPatrol.exe isn't designed to run with Administrator privileges as is WinPatrolEx.exe.
