Cursor freezes - then screen shits off!

Quite often, my cursor freezes. There is a pause then the screen shuts off although the power is still on. I have to shut off from the power bar and turn on again. 
I am a senior with limited knowledge so would appreciate you not being too technical.

Hi, ipcress.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum! 

Are you using a desktop computer or a laptop?  If it is a desktop, is it the power to the monitor you turn off or do you turn off the computer completely?

Hi. It's a desktop.  After the cursor freezes, the screen shuts off. The computer is still on but I can't power off the usual way. I have to shut off using the power bar which shuts everything off. Then I turn the power bar on again and the computer reboots. Thanks.

Hi, ipcress.

Since your computer is Windows XP, I suspect you have had it for a number of years.  It is possible that the monitor has gone bad.  However, let's see what we can do . . . 

The first thing to check is that the connection from the monitor to the tower is securely plugged in.  Following that, have you updated drivers? 

Before making any system changes, I suggest creating a new System Restore point (even though drivers can be rolled back).

-- Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click on System Restore.
-- Click on the Create a restore point radio button and then click Next.
-- Name the restore point (i.e. “Before installing driver”, etc.)
-- Click Create

Next, check for an update:

        1.   Click the Windows "Start" button.
        2.   Click "Control Panel."
        3.   Click "System and Security," then click "Device Manager."
        4.   Click the arrow next to "Display Adapters," and double-click the name of your video card.
        5.   Click "Driver." Click the "Update Driver" button to check for and install any updates.
