About Windows 10 upgrade period
« on: July 27, 2016, 02:42:57 PM »
Hello, again!

I have a question ... again!

My sister has an HP mini laptop. It is the one my nephew used before buying his own computer, and I asked for your help for it, some years ago. Unfortunately, the charger does not work anymore, and we discovered this yesterday, when I suggested to upgrade it to Windows 10. Computers stores, here in Cyprus, do not sell this specific charger anymore, and if I buy one from Amazon or Ebay, it will come at least during next week. This means that the computer cannot be upgraded to Windows 10? Is there a possibility Microsoft to extend the period for the free upgrade?

Since I don't use a laptop, I wasn't going to respond.
But since no one else has....

Are you SURE, it's the charger, and not the Battery?

If someone who knows what he/she is doing responds, feel free to ignore this post.

Thank you, Pete, for your response. The problem is 100% the charger; my nephew's rabbit ate it in several places...

OK... When my wife left her tablet unused & uncharged for several months, the batteries went totally dead and wouldn't take a charge. I revived it with a "trickle charge" procedure that was described in the manual. After a few hours, they were "alive" enough to charge normally.

It was just a thought.
Anything's possible, but it's highly unlikely that MS is going to extend the free upgrade.
Can you borrow the use of a compatible  charger from a friend?

If the output voltage (and polarity if DC) is the same, the amperage capacity is equal or better, and the fittings match, it doesn't necessarily have to be an HP charger.

I suspect that the power supply for my Dell desktop, would get you going long enough to upgrade, but since we're several thousand miles apart, we can't find out.

Again, I wish someone more familiar with laptop power supplies would respond... I suspect some of these things have been standardized, but don't know which.

Thank you, Pete. I appreciate your help.  :)

The problem is the very small hole for the charger on the computer. That's why I didn't find one at the computer stores.

Hi, Panos.  The upgrade time is not going to be extended.  Family members could ask their friends if they have that type of charger they could borrow.

Panos,

Is or was there an alternate power adapter cord with the mini laptop?  For instance with my mother's old Acer laptop there is a "DC-in" jack where an AC adapter cord plugs in.  Using that jack I run the laptop off of the usual house electricity and not the battery.  Maybe someone could hunt for such an adapter?

Good morning, Corrine, Pete! and v_v.

Unfortunately, there is nothing else but the old destroyed cable. It seems that the computer will continue working with Windows 7.

Strange: Some people are happy with Windows 7 and see Windows 10 as a threat for their personal security. Some others, like me, understand that Windows 10 is just a newer, and better, I should say, since I tried it, operating system, and staying with an old system, after 29 July, is a lost opportunity. Personally, and I'm talking as an ''ordinary'' person who uses computer daily, not a tech or a Microsoft's employee, I would recommend Windows 10 upgrade, saying that everything is a matter of settings. Don't let the opportunity go away, although it is your choice.  :)

And something about Microsoft's notifications about the upgrade: I have an ipod touch. Every time a new iOS is released, I get notifications about the upgrade every time I enter my password to use it. Not just every day. Every time I'm about to use the ipod. It even has a message for letting the upgrade to be done during the night period. Of course, I proceed, and never thought that Apple is pushing me to what they want. It's just a newer OS.  :)

Truthfully for an HP mini, I suspect Win 7 will run better than Win 10. A lot of mini laptops came with very little RAM.

Since Win 7 will receive security updates through January 2020, your sister will be safe running it.

We have 4 computers in the house: 2 desktops and 2 netbooks with Win 7 and we will continue to use them online until early 2020.
Then I will switch to either linux, Android or ChromeOS to surf safely.

Panos,

Here's a headline posted today August 3, 2016

Quote
Windows 10 free upgrade is still available using Windows 7 and 8 product keys

This is the headline on the following ZDNet article:  " http://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-free-upgrade-is-still-available-using-windows-7-and-8-product-keys/?ftag=TREc64629f&bhid=18804937484533241913548385563542 ".

Essentially the article is saying that Windows 10 upgrades are still available on this date for some situations if one has a valid Windows 7 or 8 product key.  No one knows (not even Microsoft) how long this availability might last, so if you have gotten the charger or whatever you need to get your sister's mini laptop up and running you still might have a chance to upgrade.  Here is the article's

Bottom line: We don't know when Microsoft will finally and completely shut off the free Windows 10 updates for Windows 7 and 8.X users. But if you still don't have Windows 10 and want it, I'd say you should hurry.

Thank you, v_v.

The adapter will arrive by the last weak of August, so I will have to wait since then before trying anything. I hope that we will be lucky. :)
