Adding Outlook 2007 to Windows XP Netbook
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:26:35 PM »
Because my netbook does not have a cd drive, I downloaded from my old Outlook 2007 disk a copy of Outlook 2007 to a flash drive and loaded on the netbook.  However, it will not let me activate Outlook, even though I have the activation number from the back of the case.  I need it mainly for the Word program.  The way it is now, I cannot do any editing/changing to any of the Word documents I have loaded onto the netbook.

I have newer versions of Outlook on my other computers.  I have looked on the Microsft website/forums and cannot find a solution that works.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about activating Outlook 2007.  This is a legitimately purchased disk, by the way.

Hi, WalnutCreek.

As I recall, the standard retail version of Microsoft Office 2007 can be installed on one computer plus one mobile device.  The licensing terms are available from Microsoft Software License Terms (MSLT) for the 2007 Microsoft Office system - support - Office.com.

You may need to use something like Open Office to edit Word documents on the Netbook.

(Edited to fix wording.)

If you have exhausted your license (such as one computer plus one mobile device/laptop for Retail licenses as Corrine mentioned) you will need to purchase an additional license.

If you uninstalled other installs of Office 2007 from other systems (such as you had it on a desktop, and now it's uninstalled from there) you will need to explain this and answer some questions when you call the activation line.

And, if you installed Office 2007 on other systems and then upgraded those other systems to future versions of Office (such as your Office 2007 is a 'full' license and Office 2010 is an 'upgrade' license), then the upgraded install for Office 2010 is dependent on Office 2007. This means even though you are using Office 2010, the Office 2007 license is still tied to that Office 2010 installation. The upgrade license stays attached to the previous license. Same is true if you had Office XP, upgraded to Office 2007, and then upgraded to Office 2010 - in this case, the install would tie back through the Office 2007 install and use Office XP as its base.

Hope this helps,

//Aaron
