Browser shuts down unexpectedly
« on: June 25, 2015, 09:29:24 AM »
The problem started some months ago: Browser (Pale Moon - I didn't try IE) shuts down unexpectedly when I work in the Web, either I have only one tab open or two or more.

These days I am all day in the Internet and the problem occurs very often.

What can I do please?

Please provide more details about your system.

By "shut down", exactly what do you mean? Does it totally exit? Can you immediately open it again?

Is PM fully updated?

Is Windows fully updated?

Have you scanned for malware?

Hi, Panos.

I wondered the same thing as Digerati.  Does Pale Moon completely close or does it "freeze"?

The next time it happens, launch Pale Moon in Safe Mode.  The instructions are at HowTo create a new Pale Moon Profile & use the Safemode.  Just go as far as the second image at this point and click "Continue in Safe Mode".  If it crashes again, the next time, click "Disable all add-ons".  If it crashes again, it could be due to an add-on causing problem.

Let us know what happens.

I mean that it completely exits of all the pages I have opened.

PM and Windows are fully updated and I don't think I have malware. I will do what Corrine said when it happen again.

NOTE: Just now, it just freezed (Pale Moon stopped working etc). This did  not happen before.

It's reading like *something* is causing interference. Need full details, both of all PM extensions/plugins/themes etc. and of all resident programs running in Windows. Maybe also a check for stray/remnant .dlls.

The CTD (crash to desktop), does PM just disappear, no warning/error message?

What sites are you on when the freezes happen?

I have these extensions:
1. Flash and video download
2. Youtube mp3 downloader
3. Lazarus form recovery
4. Adblock Latitude

Plug-ins
All of them are in the option ask to activate, except from Microsoft Office, which I don't know what it is and if I need it.

Appearance: Default

What do you mean resident programs?

Yes, PM just disappears, without any warning.

i AM running in safe mode now. All is fine till now.

Have you ever totally uninstalled PM and then reinstalled it since this problem surfaced? I am not suggesting you do that now, I am just wondering.

For a list of the extensions, themes, plugins, that Andy requested, you can use Extension List Dumper :: Add-ons for Firefox and save as a text file on your computer, then copy/paste here.

Please excuse me for a little.

You need to set up what you want reported (see attached image):
  • After installing the Extension, go to about:addons (you can type that right in the address bar if you wish.
  • Scroll down to the addons and click "Options" (located on the right)
  • When the windows opens, provide a path and file name in the "Save as" spaces in the right-hand column.
  • Be sure "text" is shown.
  • Save the settings and close.
After the extension has been set up, you can see in the top right-hand corner of the Add-ons page, Dump list.  Click that and it will create the list for you.  You can even select "copy to clipboard" and paste the information here directly from the clipboard.

You don't need any MS/.NET plugins, iirc, they were all installed to the OS mistakenly by MS (so that they auto-install to any Mozilla-based browsers) but I don't recall anything about an uninstall method for them.

Let's take a look at what Autoruns shows about what's happening in the background before we dig deeper into PM. The following method runs a number of checks and lists only the unsigned Windows entries plus all non-Windows entries and allows direct checking of any Virustotal 'positives'.

Run Autoruns as Administrator, once it starts, hit Esc to stop the scanning, from the File > Options menu, select only the following:
Hide Empty Locations
Hide Windows Entries
From the File > Options > Scan Options menu:
Verify Code Signature
Check VirusTotal.com
Submit Unknown Images.

Click the Refresh icon or press F5 for the scan to restart and any uploading to VirusTotal to begin. Allow time for any VirusTotal results to be returned, check the VirusTotal column, right side of the main panel, for progress, each entry should contain a x/xx (eg. 0/57, number of positives/number of scanners used).

Once data checks are complete, File > Save As > Autoruns.ARN (the default file type), zip that saved file (Send to > Compressed folder from the mouse right-click menu) and then the Autoruns.zip can be uploaded and attached to a reply for checking.

I apologize for the delayed response.

For some days now, I ticked the option Use Firefox Compatibility Mode in my Pale Moon options, as I had it unticked. Till today, I didn't have problems, except once, but I think that that was due to a careless movement on the touch pad. I will see what will happen, and if there is a problem again I will occupy your time and efforts again. :)
