Dell Laptop - Touch-pad not working
« on: July 20, 2015, 11:38:48 PM »
Hi,

I have been having issues with my Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110). The touch-pad buttons will not work. I contacted Dell tech support before my warranty ran out and they told me to install Windows 7.  I did that and updated all the drivers but the buttons on the touch-pad still won't work. They said it was not a hardware issue. I also updated the BIOS. There is nothing else installed on my computer other than Windows 7. If I install the most current driver for the touch-pad my computer freezes and I have to restore to the point before it was installed. I now have the older version of the driver installed but the buttons still won't work. I can only use the laptop with a mouse. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?

Thanks!

I'd contact support again.
You did exactly what they suggested and it did not fix the issues. The only way they can determine that it is not a hardware issue is to take the laptop apart and look at it.

Thank you. I have tried to contact them but, since my warranty is now expired, they want to charge, but keep insisting it is a software issue and nothing is wrong with the hardware. I contacted them when the laptop was under warranty and they kept telling me to just re-install Windows. I will have to look into finding a computer repair service.

Hi, tss210.

According to the website, the Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) is from 2011.  Did Dell have you confirm that the touch-pad is enabled?  What about reinstalling the driver?

I suggest you start with enabling the touch-pad.  See the instructions on this page for Windows 7: Disabling or enabling the touchpad on a Dell notebook | Dell US

If that doesn't solve the problem, follow the link, on the same page for instructions on updating the driver.  The touch-pad drivers are located in the Mouse, Keyboard and Input Devices section of this page:  Product Support | Dell US.

Very good advice, Corrine. I had the same problem and had to reinstall the drivers and my touchpad worked. Haven't had any problems with my computer's touchpad since then. :Hammys pint: :mitch:

Thanks so much for everyone's input.

I checked and the touch-pad is enabled. I have tried re-installing the drivers several times. The most up to date driver seems to freeze my computer so I am using the older version. It shows up as Dell Touchpad>Alps Electric in the device manager under Mice and other pointing devices. The touch-pad works to move the cursor around but the right button will not work at all and the left button only works to open a folder or file or max/min or close a window.

Searching the Dell Knowledgebase, there seems to be a lot of issues with the touchpad:  http://pilot.search.dell.com/touchpad%20settings.

I wish I could provide additional suggestions but, other than checking that there is no debris around the touch-pad buttons, I don't have any other ideas.  I very, very seldom use the touchpad since I use the Evoluent Vertical Mouse.
