GTK +2 Runtime environment update question
« on: September 12, 2011, 02:30:05 PM »
Secunia alerted that I need to update GTK + 2.12.9 Runtime environment, which I need to run GIMP.

I downloaded the fix , which is GTK +2.24.0

It had a bunch of folders in the download. The first one is bin, and it contains an .exe file and some .dlls.    Should I run the exe file over the old GTK installation?  Or should I remove my current installation first?

I would check here for sure and see what they advise,

You're only as safe as your last update.

I was advised at Gimper.net  ( my usual go-to help forum for gimp stuffs) to update Gimp and that would take care of it.

It did not. Secunia still shows the old version, and my Add/Remove programs list shows it also.

So I'm back to my original question.  Do I just run the .exe file in the GTK +2.24.0   fix that Secunia suggested?

Do I uninstall the first version before I do that, or install over the old one?

I personally recommend that you un-install the older version 1st
then install the new version.

As always with any major update (or even just for peace of mind)  create a system restore point.

Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

I'm not sure what exactly happened.

Maybe its that the update to Gimp now contains GTK runtime environment.  But I uninstalled the old GTK, and the update version errored and did not install. However, Gimp seems to be working properly.

I guess I'm done and I can just discard the update files?

Yes.  After all, the next update will be new files.
