E-Bay Offers
« on: April 02, 2017, 07:04:57 PM »
Hello!

Today I received an email from eBay; it has special offers in specific items. Among the offers, there is this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/332124873285?ul_noapp=true

I know that it's no use to ask now, but I bought it... I thought that I could give it as a present to a friend. When I closed browser's tab, I realized that there was a pop-up window opened, about bets, like the ones they pop-up when we visit unsafe sites.

What do you think? I acted like a fool??? Or is this a real offer??

First, the "Plus" version of Office Professional is only "legally" available via "volume" licensing channels. It is not intended to be sold separately to individuals outside of the organization the volume license was purchased for. Second, Office Professional 2016 single licenses sell for £389.99. So does £5.99 sound legit to you?

I realize these keys are commonly offered for too-good-to-be-true prices. And they may actually work. But being technically possible does not make them legit or the right thing to do. Sorry.

Is it normal for eBay to send you emails?

I got an email from "Paypal". First clue it was bogus, it was addressed to "Dear Customer". Anytime Paypal sends me an email, they address me by my registered name.

There were also a few other telltale signs that this was bogus.

I forwarded the email to Paypal with the address I had spoof@paypal.com so they could shut down whoever was sending these messages.

Does eBay have a fraud department? If so, find the email address and forward anything suspicious to them.

On your computer scan it and aslo do a few online scans to be sure you are clean.

Thanks Paddy. I don't use eBay. I might browse and post a picture of something but I've never shopped there and don't have an account.

I shop eBay quite regularly, have never gotten any unsolicited emails from them about anything.  If I ask a seller a question, I do get an email notification ...

Thanks for all the info.

The emails I receive, indicate: You were sent this e-mail because your Notification Preferences indicate that you want to receive information about Special Promotions, Offers and Events.

I don't remember to accepted such a thing, but I can unsubscribe, by clicking on a link just after.

So, I just lost 8 euros. My concern was not this of course. It was the security of my computer which made me ask for your advice. And now I noticed that my Office is Home and Student and not Pro Plus.

Just to learn something more. The link I posted above, says:

NOTE TO EBAY – THESE DIGITAL LICENCSE KEYS ARE OBTAINED FROM PCS NO LONGER REQUIRED. IT IS LEGAL UNDER THE EU LAW TO SELL USED LICENSCES. ALL KEYS ARE FROM UNINSTALLED PCS AND ARE CHECKED BY US TO ENSURE THEY ARE 100% AUTHENTIC.

We don't believe these words. Write??? There are no EU laws about selling used licenses.

I don't. The only way I can think of that these licenses MIGHT be legal to sell is when they are sold with the computer they were registered to. And then, the auditing software would have to be updated to ensure the new number of authorized licenses are not exceeded.

I don't know what "PCS NO LONGER REQUIRED" means. The volume licenses I have dealt with before can never be sold individually. If the computer is disposed of (not sold or donated, but sent to the dump or electronics recycling center) that license is returned to the "pool" of licenses.

That is the same as with regular OEM licenses. They are never transferable to a new computer. And they can only be transferred to a new owner with the original computer it was installed on. Only full retail licenses are fully transferable.

If that link is in the same email about this 'sale', I wouldn't click on it.  Safer to go into your Account tab and click Notification Preferences.

Be very wary, I visited eBay just recently looking at those MS Office items and on one I got a popup to install firefoxpatch.exe (and posted about it here), LOL. It's basically all shady, IMO.
