Computer Crashing?
« on: March 04, 2011, 12:34:22 AM »
My computer was working fine until I downloaded and installed the Feb. Security Updates for WinXP SP3.  Right after that, my programs quit working.  I also couldn’t get on the Internet.  I could open folders but not files.  I could get in the Control Panel but nothing in it worked.  When I tried to use the Turn Off feature on the Start Menu, the computer locked up.  I used the tower button to shut it down and then start up again.  Windows booted into my Desktop with no trouble.

The computer worked for a while, then crashed again.
I shut down, unplugged and then started again.  It worked again for a while, then crashed once more.

I went into Safe Mode and did a System Restore back to before I installed the updates, thinking there was an incompatibly problem with the updates.

The computer worked for several days after that and then crashed again  During one of the working times, I updated and ran scans with Avast and Malwarebytes.  They were both clean.

Each time I shut down and start up, it works anywhere from ten minutes to several days, though usually its only an hour or so.

I contacted Microsoft but they haven’t been able to solve the problem.  I’m afraid that one of these shut downs will result in my computer not booting up or booting but not having any working time after it does, which will render my computer useless.

Can anyone tell me what might be blocking my programs and files?  Why it only works part of the time after start up?  And, most importantly, how can I fix it?

Hi, deew.  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.

Can you tell us what Microsoft Support did?

Please realize that it could very well be coincidence that the problem started after the February updates and there is some kind of hardware failure.  It would also help to know more about what is on your computer.  Please do the following.

Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) (Note: Please allow the download of HijackThis if requested by RSIT).
  • Download RSIT by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Note:  For users with 64-bit systems, please download RSIT from here.
  • Double-click RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized).

Thanks for the welcome.

The Microsoft tech had me do the System Restore in Safe Mode.    Another thing he told me to do was disable Microsoft Updates and only use Windows updates, which doesn't really help me with my current problem.

He also requested System Info for him, using the Run feature.  I still have the file.  Do you want me to send that, or is what you are asking for something different?

Hi, deew.

How about if you do both.  The information the Support person requested may have something additional that is helpful.  (Note:  if the logs are long, it may take a second reply to get all the information.)

Here's the first one you wanted.  BTW, I just heard from Microsoft again.  The tech suggested I do a repair using the Windows XP   CD.  I don't have a CD for XP.  But, I'm not doing anything that you don't suggest.

Hi, deew .  Welcome to LandzDown Forum.
Corrine will no doult as you to do some cleaning as you have some nasty items on there so while you wait could you
please follow all instructions provided in the sequence given.  Do not install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use.  This may cause conflicts with the tools being used in the cleanup process.

If you have questions regarding any of the instructions or problems running any tools, please let us know.

Although your topic at G-W indicated you were able to scan with MBAM in Safe Mode, your topic here indicates otherwise.  Thus, I am providing complete instructions.

Please restart your computer and select Safe Mode with Networking. (To do this, turn your computer off and then back on and immediately when you see anything on the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter on your keyboard. Windows will now boot into safe mode with networking and prompt you to login as a user.)

Please start Internet Explorer, and when the program is open, do the following:
-- click on the Tools menu and then select Internet Options.
-- click on the Connections
-- click on the Lan Settings button tab
-- under the Proxy Server section, please uncheck the checkbox labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN"
-- press the OK  button to close this screen. Then press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen.

Please download rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double-click rkill to run.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
  • Do NOT restart your computer after running rkill as the malware program(s) will start again.
Notes:

If you you receive security warnings about rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Next, please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, be sure Quick scan is selected, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, EXCEPT items in System Restore as shown in this sample:
  • Click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See the Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

** Note **

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

NOTE:  If you need to restart your computer, it will be necessary to run RKill again in order to run MBAM.
Also the scan will take a long time to finnish but let it finnish.

GR@PH;<'S   :Hammys pint:
press Enter then have a Brandy then if the problem is still there have another Brandy
Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

Hi, deew.

Please go to C:\rsit and launch info.txt.  Copy/paste that log as a reply.  In the meantime, I will be looking for what GR@PH;<'S indicated you posted at GardenWeb.

The only topic I'm seeing at GW is http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/comphelp/msg0314525824498.html?3  Is there another topic?

Although you are using Avast and Zone Alarm, you have leftovers of AVG and Outpost Firewall that could be causing conflicts.  Please post the requested info.txt and we'll look closer.

I think I understand your instructions, but I want to be sure, so I have three questions.

I have Malwarebytes installed on my computer, but am I right that you want a fresh copy put on my Desktop?

If my computer crashes in the middle of any of these steps, which is highly likely, do I shut down, start up and then take up where it left off or start over or what?

If I screw up something, how much damage can I do?

Also, here's the info file.

I used HijackThis and another program I can't remember the name of (per zep at GW) to try and get rid of all the residuals of AVG and Outpost, but they wouldn't delete after trying twice.

Corrine, here's the link to my original post at GW.

Thanks, deew.

Please hold off on the Malwarebytes scan.  I'd like to take a closer look at your logs.

If you still have the log you provided Microsoft Support, please post that as well.  I would like to see what, if any, additional information may be there.  I am concerned because one of the event log errors indicated "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation."  However, there were several "services" errors, which are due to the incomplete uninstall of the old security programs.

BTW, I don't see anything about HJT in either of your topics at GW.

Oh, I'm so sorry I didn't make myself clear.  When I ran HijackThis, it was last year regarding a problem that an AVG program update caused.  That's when I went to Avast and tried to delete all of AVG, which as I said, didn't work completely..

Ah, ok.  That makes more sense.  Do you have the info you sent Microsoft support?

He also requested System Info for him, using the Run feature.  I still have the file.

I have the file, but it is too big to copy and too big to send as an attachment here.  I can send it to an e-mail address, if you have one you would be willing to send me.

Hi, deew.

Let's see what we can do first to find out if it helps with your computer.

As described herefacemoods can use your CPU and bandwidth:
Quote
Toolbar.Facemood installs a toolbar in the Internet Explorer and in the Mozilla Firefox, changes the start page of both browsers and changes the default searchbar in the browser. Additionally it displays advertisement and offers the possibility to add fun icons to mails. If the user installs Toolbar.Facemood he has to agree that CPU und bandwidth can be used by Toolbar.Facemood and personal information like used browsers, language, operating system and IP-Address get stored.

Based on the above description, I advise you to go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall facemoods and then do the following.

Following that, let's deal with the leftover AVG/Outpost files.  Since there are so many entries showing in your logs, it will be simplest for you to let ComboFix do the heavy lifting after I see what is left following the initial run.

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note:  If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum:  How to disable your security applications.

Now, please run ComboFix:
  • Note:  If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process.  Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • As part of the process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it is strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. The Recovery Console will allow you to start up the computer in a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed on the computer, ComboFix will continue the malware removal procedures.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

  • After the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click "Yes" to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log (located at C:\Program Files\trend micro\hdw4.exe).
