Yes, the problem persists. I think that a folder named SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION in the external disc causes the problem, but I cannot delete it, even if I turn off system restore...

Have you tried updating the device driver?

Also, is it possible to try the drive on another computer so as to attempt to isolate the problem?  If the problem does not repeat itself on the second computer, then it might well be system-related.

Also,  let's check a setting:

1. Right-click on (My) Computer
2. Select Manage
3. Select Device Manager
4. Open Disk Drives
5. Double-click on the hard drive's model number
6. Go to the Policies tab
7. Check whether the drive is set to Optimize for Quick Removal

It is usb mass storage device.

Have you seen my last post in page 1 about windirstat? I made something wrong with that action?

You're saying the external drive doesn't show up in My Computer?

"I made something wrong with that action?" ... don't be surprised if the folder reappears the next time you plug the external drive into the USB port.

I'm not certain why you are concerned with the RECYCLER and SYSTEM RESTORE folders.  They aren't causing problems ...

Sorry about my english and  perhaps my bad explanations...

I am talking about an external hard disk (usb mass storage device, Philips).

When I try to remove it (from the icon right down) a message appears that the generic volume cannot be stopped now, try later.

I made an assumption that the folder System Volume Information inside the disk might be the problem, since when I click it it says that access is denied and that it has been used by another person or something like that. I think that if I delete that folder, the external disk will be removed safely...

Apology for all this...

No worries, I understand what you are saying.  You have an external USB drive connected.  When you want to remove it, you click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the bottom right of your screen.  You highlight the USB drive and then "stop", but you get an error message, something like "Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later".  You wait a while, and try again, but no joy.

1.  Those two folders have nothing to do with the problem.  You are being denied access to them because they are protected system files, and Microsoft doesn't want you to mess with them.  Even if I showed you how to delete the folders, they will be re-created automatically the next time you used the external drive.

2.  Please check for the "Optimize for Quick Removal" setting from my previous instructions, and let me know if it is ticked or not.

3.  There are some other things to try, but not yet ...

It is checked...

(I understand that Microsoft protects these system files, but only for the computer's hard disk. Now we are talking about an external disk... Why can I have in my external anything I want? I really want to delete that folder (I deleted recycler) !!! )

Your computer, your choice what runs or doesn't run.  Just to be clear, tampering with the Recycle Bin will cause deleted files to be permanently deleted immediately.  I presume you are using the external hard drive to backup files from your computer.

Your ESET Smart Security should be trying to scan that external drive whenever you plug it in.  I trust it isn't running while you are trying to unplug the external?

The Safely Remove Hardware application tells XP that you intend to remove a device, giving Windows the opportunity to prepare by halting data transfers to the device, unloading device drivers, etc.  Removing hardware from a running system without using the Safely Remove Hardware application is a "surprise" removal, and that is a problem when using storage devices for which write caching is enabled ... data loss or corruption might occur.  To reduce the likelihood of data loss or corruption as a result of surprise removal, XP sometimes disables write caching by default, but generally not for IEEE 1394 external drives.

Since the Optimize for Quick Removal is ticked, write caching on the storage device and in Windows is disabled.  This allows you to remove the device without using the Safely Remove Hardware application, but it can have an impact on the performance of the device.

One other thing to try ... sometimes, turning off the indexing in Windows XP solves the problem.  Access My Computer, and right-click on the drive letter assigned to the drive. Select Properties. You should see the Allow Indexing option under the default tab. If this is checked, uncheck it.  Try to unmount the drive and see if it works.

Ok, I tried what you said in the last paragraph, but no luck.

So, you mean that I can remove the disk without turn off the computer (since the problem with the safely removal exists) ?  By the way, I checked the policies of an other external drive, and the same option is checked. Although, I can safely remove this one from the icon on task bar... In this external (not the one with the problem) there is no folder System Volume Information, only the recycler which is recreate itself when I try to delete it, but this is ok.

Before, I was wondering why Microsoft cares about whatever one has in his/her external drives. I understand that this is important (and useful) with computers and their hard disks and I agree with you (your computer, your choice etc). But why must I have that folder in my external?  :)

Anyway, if you say that it is ok to remove it from the usb port, I will do so!   THANK YOU!!

I have a problem now and then with the same error message, as do most people.  As an infrequent solution, I have no problems just unplugging the power and then the USB cord on my external drive.  However I wouldn't want to do that as a routine thing ...

If you are experiencing this issue every time you try to remove hardware, it might be wise to do some more troubleshooting and find out what processes are causing the problem.

Have you tried the external drive on another computer to see if you can replicate the problem?

Ouff...

The problem occurs every time I try to remove the disk from any computer...

In addition, today, the problem I mentioned in the first post of the topic (computer freezes when I insert external hard disk) appeared again... Last night, and after installing the new version of ESSET, everything was ok... And I made a lot of restarts. Today, the same thing again...

Sorry for this post.

I think that the problem with computer freezing occurs now when I use a particular usb port. This means that I cannot anymore use that port, right?

And back to the "generic volume that it cannot be stopped right now..."...

Just a thought make sure that you do not use a USB Desktop Hub.
I had similaror problem a year or to ago and found that every time I wanted to use Netty's (my wife)
external drive i had to remove my Desktop Hub

GR@PH;<'S   :Hammys pint:

Q: does it work
A: It does seem to for a few hours at least.

Thank you, GR@PH;<'S.

How can I check this? (usb desktop hub)

NOTE: I don't know why, but something tells me that the folder System Volume Information (in my external disk) causes the problem, since it is a system procedure that is running all the time...  :(
