Process Explorer is a nifty tool that will find what is running on your external drive when you want to remove it:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

Install, run ... then CTRL+F (or click Find, Find Handle or DLL in the tool menu).   Type the drive letter of the device, followed by a colon, and then click on Search.

What you'll see are the processes on your machine that have the device in use.

Now that you've identified which process has the device in use, you can take appropriate action.

You can also use Process Explorer to close the handle, which will then allow Safely Remove Hardware to dismount the external drive.

Thank you, GR@PH;<'S.

How can I check this? (usb desktop hub)

Do you have one, or are you asking what they are?

If the former, just plug directly into your computer USB port and bypass the hub.  That will tell you if the hub is the problem.

If the latter, here are some examples:  http://www.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?Section_Id=205966

You have a hundred+ processes using your external hard drive?

Here's a tutorial that may help you ... http://captaindbg.com/tutorial-and-advance-troubleshooting-using-process-explorer/

EDIT!

Ok!!! I typed z, instead of z: !!!!

Here is what I get:

svchost.exe    1692      Handle           Z:\$extend\$0bjld
svchost.exe    1692      Handle           Z:\System Volume Information\tracking.log

svchost.exe    1692      Handle           Z:\System Volume Information\tracking.log

Here is some news:

I double clicked on those above, and then killed the process. They were both deleted, and FOR THE FIRS TIME my external disk was safely removed! I got enthusiastic and made a restart.

The problem reappeared... (both processes appeared in Process Explorer again)

(NOTE: The tracking.log appears in the folder of SVI every time I try to remove the disk)

You should not be killing processes (especially those that host system services) without knowing what they are (or in this case, what services they're hosting). Process Explorer is very capable of crashing the system if you tell it to.

I think that I found a SOLUTION.

(First, you cannot imagine what I tried, and I hope that I didn't make any damage to the system!)

Well, "the guilty" for all these, was MCShield CPanel. I stopped it, and the external disk can be safely remove at once!

Now, my questions (you are the experts  :D ) :

1. Why Process Explorer didn't tell me that MCShield was running in my external?

2. Is it better to uninstall MCShield now? If this is not necessary, what options should I keep?

Thanks in advance!

I've never used MCShield.  Is there a setting in the CPanel that will change it's behavior?

Actually I installed it after Corrine's advice, when I had an infected computer. And it is really very good. It can find immediately infections in removable drives. Perhaps she can tell us more in concern to the problem occured.

NOTE: This happens only with removable drives using NTFS system. When I used a drive with FAT system, everything was ok. The folder System Volume Information also exists in NTFS systems. Not FAT.

I suggested MCShield because you were transferring files around with a USB stick and were concerned because you had been using it on your friend's infected computer.

I suggest checking "Close scanner after initial scan of all drives".  If that doesn't solve the problem, I'll contact dr_Bora for his advice.

Thanks, Corrine.

This does not fix the problem. The only action that fixes the problem is stop the program and click save.

Sounds simple enough to right click the tray icon and select Stop. The program is disabled and can't interfere with anything.

Perhaps MCShield had an open file on the drive due to the interference by some other security application?  Have you added your security programs to the exclusions lists to avoid conflicts?

For anyone reading this thread, here is the English help file for MCShield:  http://amf.mycity.rs/programs/mc/mcshield/Doc/MCShield_Help_EN.pdf
