computer has now a mind of its own
« on: April 03, 2016, 09:36:21 PM »
I need help with this computer. It is Windows 7 with Firefox. The other day I lost all my folders with the favorites sites. This computer is just not running right, I hope I am saying this right it just drops pages, goes to something I was not even on. The computer is a Dell & maybe 2 years old. I am not good on this computer but now it is making me nuts. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mary

Have you scanned for malware and if so, with what?

Is Windows 7 fully updated?

Except for your favorites folders, being redirected to other sites, and dropping pages (I don't know what dropping pages means), does the computer work fine otherwise. That is, if you do something that does not involve the Internet, like edit a Word document, does it work fine?

Do you mean Bookmarks? (That's what FF call Favorites).

Firefox keeps 10 sets of backup bookmarks (files with .json extension and the date)

Here's how to restore one set from a previous date

To answer Digerati- yes I have scanned for malware. I use Malwarebytes & it was clean.  Windows 7 is fully updated.

When I am looking at my e-mails I will go to hit one to delete & it will delete 2 or 3 at one time.

I don't use the computer for anything else but the internet.

To answer plodr, yes I guess that is what it is Bookmarks. I am not good on the computer at all. I tried to restore from the site you gave me but I am too confused trying to do that.

Thanks for the help

1. Click on Bookmarks
2. Click on Show all Bookmarks
3. Click on Import and Backup
4. Don't click but rest your mouse over Restore.
You get a list of dates of backup bookmarks.  I'm showing 15 choices on my computer.
5. Select one of the dates and click on it.

What happens?

plodr,
When I hit bookmarks I go to a list of dates of backup bookmarks but none of the dates showing are before my problem started. I have tried setting up new bookmarks & don't want to loose those if I mess up. Like I said I don't know a thing about computers.
I thank you for your help
Mary

You will never show bookmarks from a month again. Only 10 to 15 are saved, unless you edit something to save more than that amount of backups.

You made it sound like your bookmarks were lost a day or 2 previous to when you posted and not several weeks earlier.

I save my bookmarks as an html file and put it on a USB stick.
1. Click bookmarks
2. Click on Show all Bookmarks
3. Click on Import and Backup
4. Click on Export Bookmarks to HTML and be sure to select your desktop so you know where to find them to copy them off the computer for safe keeping.

I was not looking for bookmarks from 1 month ago, this just happened on Fri. I am going to leave it be because I don't know what I am doing. Thank you for the help
