Disappearing DVD/CD-Rom ?
« on: July 16, 2010, 11:49:09 AM »
My grandson has a disappearing DVD/CD-Rom problem.  He is unable to keep it recognizable.  Sometimes when he boots up it is there other times it is gone?   Mostly gone and now the tricks he was using to get it back are not working?  Any ideas anyone?  BTW  He got desperate and restarted his laptop from the box but it still continues to happen.

you can either first test for malware or first test for bad hardware, read on:

download and use this:
http://devbuilds.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/RescueDisk10/

which is the kaspersky rescue disk.  you need internet access.  you boot from it.  it will eliminate enough stuff to let you get to the next step

run malware bytes, removing any carp it finds

find the pc's serial nr, go to the mfg's website and download the chipset driver

failing that?
either follow the malware reporting instructions on this site
or
unplug all wires to the dvd and re-plug them, then, if needed,
replace the hardware with a known-good dvd player from another machine to check if it's bad hardware

"the tricks he was using to get it back are not working"

What were these, exactly?

"He got desperate and restarted his laptop from the box"

I'm assuming this means he formatted it and restored the factory image, is that right?

Shut downs, leaving laptop alone for days unplugged, running Anti virus, defrags, etc... Hardware tests show it isn't there when it isn't there obviously. Sometimes these tricks work other times they don't.  Now not at all. The LT does not recognize it has the hardeware.

How old's this laptop?  I'm thinking hardware, especially given the machine was reimaged.  If it works when the machine is first turned on aftering being off a while (as in, it's cold), and it starts to not work after the machine's on a while (hot), then I'd really think hardware.  It could be a cable/connector is loose, but I wouldn't bet the farm.

If it is hardware, easy fix:  buy an external drive that runs via USB.  Roughly $40.  Might cost more:  contact the manufacturer for a repair.

I hope that this is a VERY limited situation & whatever it is will be resolved quickly.

LT not all that old thinking 3 yrs.?   But no when we get the ROM to show up it stays till he turns it off/shuts down, restarts, etc.  Then when he powers up it is gone!  Will try HP to see if they know?  Haven't tried Temmu suggests yet as we haven't brought it along to connect to the net.

try ejecting the cd/dvd drive mechanism itself.
there may be a single small screw to remove before the whole thing slides out.
this unplugging/plugging action may clean off trace corrosion from the pins and may resolve your issue.

hope all goes better with work and all, niecarrah.
