Title: Disk failure or something else?
Post by: DR M on September 26, 2020, 08:53:31 AM
A friend asked me to help her with her HP Windows 10 laptop.

At start up, she gets a message that 3f0 Boot Device not found.

There are some options to start diagnostic tests, and I told her to try the long test for the disk.

She got this message: Hard drive issue SMART Check PASSED Long DST FAILED

And she gets the first error message again, that Boot Device not found.

What do you think?

Is it a hard disk failure? If yes, is it possible to recover her data?

SMART Check PASSED
Long DST FAILED

HP forums have threads that ask what does this mean. The response, the hard drive is failing or has already failed.

Best to attach the drive to another computer to get files off then replace the drive.

Update:

The computer is under warranty and my friend sent it for repair.

I hope she has copies of her files. I don't think when they replace the hd, the techs worry about files on the old drive. They will probably just install the latestest version of Windows 10.
