Documents size is very small!
« on: September 16, 2018, 03:37:43 PM »
I have a problem ... again. And this time it is all mine...  :o

I am trying to back up the content of all my libraries in an external hard disk. OK. I did it.

BUT: My Documents content is shown as 3,52 GB only! Both in the computer and in the external hard disk!

In my other external (has a back up from February 2017), Documents' content has a normal size: 92 GB.

I tried to see if something is missing but I can't say.

I attach a photo from computer's Documents and from the external's Documents.
Nothing...

In the attachment below, it seems that when I hoover the mouse on the word Documents, the size is 93,6 GB.

But when I right click on the word, and then select Properties, the size is 3,52 (see previous post-attachment).

I can't understand what is happening. I don't want to loose more than a year's work. :(

The first image above (on the left) had System "File Type" not Documents as I see when I check properties.  Go to C:\Users\DR M and right-click on the Documents folder.  What does that show you?

Good morning.

This is what I get (attachment). Type: File folder this time, but again 3,52 GB...

Good find, Panos!  It appears that the issue is caused when file names exceed the path limit of 255 characters. Thus, even if the individual folder names are not over 255 characters long, with sub-folders, that could result in exceeding the file length.  From what I read at the links you provided and at TechNet, those who posted they solved the problem used TLPD.

As I understood it's a diagnostic tool. It finds all the paths that exceed a limit.

UPDATE:

I tried the tool. After it found some specific long paths, I removed them from the folder Documents. Problem is solved, as you see in the attachment.

But if there is no risk to loose any of my documents, I prefer to wait for a fix from Microsoft. What do you think?

Your goal is to create a new backup that includes the new files since the backup was created in 2017, right?  That being the case, now that you've fixed the size issue, it makes sense to me to go ahead with the new backup.

OK. Got it.

So, now I have to correct the long paths, and then back up again.

Thanks!

It was another interesting thing for learning!  :)

From what I read, after correcting the long paths, it wouldn't hurt to run TLPD a second time before creating the backup.
