Edge video problem
« on: August 25, 2020, 03:24:53 PM »
Recently installed the new Edge and things were going well until I tried to play videos on several local news sites.  They won't play, and the play/pause buttons do not appear.

Videos load but  will not start playing.  I can select places along the time line, and the frames appear, but no movement or sound.

I've disallowed auto-play, but re-enabling didn't change anything, so turned it back off again.

Youtube and facebook videos play fine.

Things I've tried:
Enabled flash
Cleared cache and cookies
Opened in new tabs
Restarted

Any ideas?

These work fine on other browsers and in Legacy Edge before I updated. Windows 10 is up to date.

I am not a new (or old) Edge expert, but I do have a few quick and simple thoughts.  Do the videos play in other chromium-based browsers?  If so, then it would seem to be a Edge-specific issue, in relation to those particular web sites.

In the top right hand corner of Edge there are three vertical dots; click on the dots and a drop down menu should appear.  In the menu click Settings.

In Settings look for Site Permissions and click on that.  In the Site Permissions you may want to review and experiment with some of those settings to see if they are relevant to your problem.  The ones that look most relevant to me are:  Cookies and Site Data; Javascript; Adobe Flash; Images; Pop-ups and Redirects; Media AutoPlay; and Insecure Content.

You may have already tried all of this.  But those are my quick and simple thoughts.

huh.  interesting.  I had tried Firefox and pale moon, but not Chrome. Testing the offending sites in Chrome produced exactly the same result.  So apparently it is a chromium issue, and that is why it worked in Legacy Edge but not in new Edge.

I'll have to explore some Chrome fixes, I guess.

So I think I figured it out.   I had added an extension that blocked HTML5 autoplay.   Even when i disabled it for the news site, it still didn't play.  But when I disabled the whole extension, the videos play again.

I should be able to toggle it just for that one site, but for some reason it didn't work.

Chrome was behaving the same way because I had the same extension enabled there.

There are two settings in Edge for Autoplay -- Allow and Limit.

Allow:  Control if audio and video play automatically on sites
All media will automatically play. Changes will only be applied to new tabs.

Limit:  Control if audio and video play automatically on sites
Media will be blocked based on what you've blocked in the past. Changes will only be applied to new tabs.

To change the setting click the three dots and select Settings or open edge://settings/content in a new tab and scroll down to "Media autoplay".

I find the "Limit" option rather weird.  What if I didn't block anything in the past?  Why not just have a "do not allow" option?

At any rate, turning off media autoplay globally  didn't stop videos from automatically playing on one particular site that uses animated images to headline their stories. That sits is what I was using the Disable HTML5 Autoplay extension for.   I've since found that I can turn off JS for that site in Edge Settings via the site permissions accessed from the lock in the address bar. That stopped the animation without making other problems on the page.

Posting for  someone else searching for a fix with a stubborn video playing site.
