As far as I know, \i386 needs to be from the CD for sliptreaming.  You'll find it on the actual system volume due to various uses of that folder name.

You only need to take the CDs.  There's no need to take the actual systems to do a slipstream of a service pack.

I ran into this in the Knowledge Base, and while it's for SP1, it might prove helpful:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 328096
Setup Prompts You for the Windows XP SP1 CD or I386 Folder When You Try to Add a Windows Component
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328096

Namely the Create & Prepare section.  Skip step 1 as it's your actual system rather than a networked system.  No idea if this works for SP3, but it's worth investigating I think.

Yesterday I wrote the following email to Chris so I will see what he says when he replies from work on Monday.......okay, and thanks again for your reply.

Hello Chris,

With my two computers now running Windows XP/SP3 I have realised I need to have a slipstreamed CD of both if I ever need to do a repair, reinstall Windows, or even a simple SFC Scannow scan.

If I dropped in both Windows XP/SP2 CD's could you make those for me, or would you have to have both systems on your bench to do it?

Please get back to me on this as I feel a bit vulnerable with no actual backup Windows OS CD that would get me out of trouble if the worst happened.

kind regards,

All the best to you.

I thought of you when I saw this today:

You can slipstream XP SP3 into any older version of the Windows XP install media to create a XP SP3 install disk, if you wish. However, do not slipstream XP SP3 from a vista machine, a bug has been reported where doing this invalidates the licence keys.

Update on Slipstreaming SP3 for Aaron.

My apologies Aaron, I should have updated you earlier in the week.

Chris is away sailing all of this week on a break.  I left both Windows XP/SP2 OS with Colmac for his attention when he returns, so should hear something when he catches up.  Both computers are working well at this point in time, so fingers crossed until he returns and catches up as far as new discs are concerned.

Cheers,  :thanks:

No worries.  I'm out of office the rest of this week myself, and Monday's a holiday, so I'll be back to reality Tuesday.

The link isn't working.  But, you can slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 3 - here's a link I think very clearly explains the process:

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/Slipstreaming_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3.html

You do need a Windows XP installation CD, either retail or OEM, such as System Builder.  If it's a custom disc, such as what some of the bigger OEMs do, then slipstreaming probably won't work.

Hope this helps,

Aaron

I followed the instructions on this page and slipstreamed SP3 on my XP PRO SP1 without a hitch. I used NTI instead of Nero. I liked Nero until the bloated Version 7 came out.

You may be able able to create your own disk if you have a OEM system Then slipstream it.
