Hi, Tim.  I'd suggest an updated scan by ewido, clearing system restore and setting a new "clean" restore point and then installing SP2, which is much more secure than SP1.  Microsoft will be ending support for SP1 in October.

To clear system restore and create a new restore point:

1. Click Start, and then right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6, except in step 4, uncheck Turn Off System Restore.

Then after you do this, please create a new restore point:

Got to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. On the next page that comes up you will have three choices, choose Create Restore Point. Then click next type in a description "after cleanup" or something like that. Then choose "Create" then close.

Hello again :)  I've been busy with a couple of things, and therefore I haven't been able to fix the stuff on the comp until now..

I did what you told me to, and I have now created a new restore-point.
However, I experience trouble in the validation process that is required to download SP2, and could you give me a link to the download of SP2? couldn't find what I needed on microsoft's download center..

the problem occurs when trying to install that WGA plugin that is downloaded, it says the installation-file of the plugin-program couldn't find the installation-catalog for the web browser..  my guess is that it's not meant to be used with firefox, which I'm using atm

what to do?

Then we'll have our battle in the shade."" - Herodotus, The Histories.  (If you're interested in the battle of Thermopylae, read "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield)

For Micro Soft  updates you will need to use IE ...

If you cant download it you could always order the C.D.

Note: it says ...Please allow approximately 4-6 weeks for shipping  But I got mine within 10 days ...

seems like someone doesn't want me to have SP2.. after following your link I found another link leading to how to install SP2. Chose download and install SP2, it says I need some new components and asks if I want to dl and inst these. I chose yes, but the dl fails for an unknown reason.

will these components be needed if I order the cd? the components were:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0

WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)

i'd download to disk, then run the install from your hard drive.
that's a ha-uge file to be loading through the vagaries of the internet.

you can get dld your missing items from microsoft before you try again so the install won't bark at you.

do you need them to install sp/2? dunno.

you may, however, need windows installer v3.1 which is newer than xp and even sp/2.
wouldn't hurt to have it installed first also.

I am back again. This time I think I'll reinstall Windows completely... Does anyone know of a simple guide, and other things to think of while reinstalling? Are there any special preparations that I should be taking care of before commencing a reinstallation?
