Title: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 14, 2020, 12:40:30 PM
I installed FireFox 52.9 on an old (14 years) XP machine I have and while it worked OK, I went looking to put on AdBlockPlus on it AFTERWARDS.

From what I can view, AdBlockPlus is version 3.7 and while it blocks ads, it has really slowed down FireFox 52.9 considerably and in some cases have made some sites now NOT viewable at all.   As an example, I can view Yahoo MAIL but when I sign out and the news articles come into play, if I click on any, majority wont load and I get Firefox (not Responding), a big white box overlay over everything and only recourse is to X out of Firefox session killing everything so yahoo must sense Adblock and kill access to everything it seems.

I do know Yahoo has a LOT of ads but it worked prior to the install of AdBlockPlus
 with FF 52.9

I ran a check for virus and also Malwarebytes and everything came back clean.

I would like to REMOVE AdBlockPlus altogether but I dont see it as a program in Control Panel Add or Remove Programs.

I know it downloaded to somewhere but I dont know Where it is to be able to remove it.

Is there a secret place to look to get it off FireFox completely?

Thanks in Advance.

AdBlock Plus is an add-on and can be disabled or removed from Tools > Add-ons > Extensions.  (My personal favorite ad-blocker is uBlock Origin.)

uBlockOrigin is much better than AdBlockPlus. I've replaced ABP with uBO several years ago.

I don't think you can get legacy addons but I have them archived somewhere. I'll have to look around and see what USB stick I have it on. (I have 8 USB cases and each case holds 6 USB sticks so it sometimes takes me awhile to find what I need.)
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: plodr on February 14, 2020, 06:06:11 PM
It was easier to find than I expected.
I have a folder with 2 xpi files (the old extensions for FF). One is an updater that needs to be installed otherwise uBO will never update and the other is an old version of uBO.

To manually install it drag the files onto an open Firefox window. The will then appear in the addons/extension window.

If you think you want to try it, post in this thread. I'll then upload the folder to my gdrive and sent you the download link in a personal message.

I did the Tools> Add-ons> Extensions and I get a box that says
I dont have any add-ons of this type installed.
(I see no where to select any sort of type).
Yet the ABP stopsign is in the upper right hand corner.
I did add Yahoo to the whitelist of addresses (if that is the best I can do for now).

I guess I would like to try UBlock Origin but I would like to figure out how to
get rid of AdBlockPlus first.
I would imagine it would not be good to run 2 in parallel.

If I were to UNinstall FF 52.9 and RE-install it, do you think that would rid me of AdBlockPlus.  If an uninstall, would trying mozilla-firefox-45-0-1 that I got from OldVersion.com be maybe a better fit instead of 52.9 ?

I recall having AdBlockPlus on a different XP machine in the past (XP#5) and dont
recall having any issues.  I was probably running FF 43 at that time (as that is the last one I had saved prior to downloading 52.9 (and now 45.0 from Oldversion).

When I say a different machine, this one IS XP# FOUR
and the 20 year old one from work (in the prior thread) was XP# One.  (2 and 3
and 5 are dead gone ~ Hard Drive fried).

What can I say, I like XP because it works so well with my old equipment
and software I bought to record my LP records to CD discs in Wav and MP3.
I buy these machines used with XP if I can acquire any local and inexpensive enough.

So Hold off on UBO upload until I can see if I can rid myself of AdBlock Plus first,
but thanks for the offer.

I don't know. It seems to me that if the extension is not installed (doesn't show in your addons) then the stop sign should not be on the toolbar.

You could try this:  How to Remove Extensions Manually in Firefox (https://www.trishtech.com/2015/04/remove-extensions-manually-in-firefox/)
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9

Well I looked at the remove extensions manually page instructions and when I followed the directions to see, it did not look anything like on the directions and looked a bit complicated to deal with as I am not that technical on this stuff.  It took me a little bit to even figure out how to show a pic here.

I took screen prints to show the stop sign shown yet there are no extensions so ???

Again, do you think if I uninstall FF 52 and re-install it or the version 45 would work.
That I think I can do.
Thanks

What happens when you RIGHT-click on the ABP Stop-sign button in the upper-right of the toolbar?  --- You should see a drop-down menu, which includes choices to Manage Extension, REMOVE Extension, and Remove from Toolbar.

If you see this, I would first try REMOVE Extension.  And if that doesn't work, try Remove from Toolbar.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 16, 2020, 06:52:29 PM
Did not see a REMOVE Extension but did see Remove from Toolbar option.

Did Remove from toolbar and the ABP stop sign is now gone from view....
HOWEVER, some sites still say AdBlock is still detected so now I cant see it and if I wanted to
whitelist it, I now cant even do that.
I guess Remove from toolbar just makes it not viewable (but not delete it?.)

This whole thing is just weird.  Still thinking of uninstalling Firefox 52 and put FF 45 maybe back on
if ya think that would work.

Actually I RE-booted the system and the AdBlock stop sign has RE-appeared so it must be removed only for the session.   Its BACK now.

This may work for stubborn uninstalls ...

Click on the “Firefox” button, then “Help”, then click “Restart with Add-Ons Disabled” and see if you can delete it.

if no joy, close the browser and then relaunch it while holding down the Shift button on your keyboard. Once the browser has relaunched, go to the Add-Ons Manager and remove AdBlock.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 17, 2020, 01:05:36 PM
Well, as you say, No Joy on both choices.

Basically both of your suggestions get me into safe mode and the AdBlock stop sign is NOT present under both of your choices and says All Add-ons have been disabled in Safe Mode.

(But there really are none to delete and nothing ever showed up in the first place.)

Now it seems that when I sign in here, I get a message that this page is NOT SECURE on the initial sign in screen that I have a favorite of (no https) but once I sign in, https is present.
That had not happened previously.
I think I will just UN-install Firefox and put a different version on to see it that fixes it.
While I liked Firefox in the past, it has become more of a liability to me on my 2 (old) machines lately.   I will do that later tonight and report back on results.
Thanks all for the input.

Are you saying that in the safe mode options after you clicked on the jigsaw puzzle piece icon (Manage your add-ons) that under Extensions you didn't see AdBlock Plus listed?  The ABP icon wouldn't have appeared on the toolbar since everything was disabled on start, but that wouldn't have had an impact on what you saw in the extension manager ... the extensions would show under a "Disabled" heading.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 18, 2020, 12:17:47 AM
I never saw ANY extensions when I clicked on the Jigsaw Puzzle piece, (SAFE MODE or NOT).

Oh and I fixed the not secure by updating my bookmark here to have it do a https.  I must have had more than one old bookmark in different folders that did not have the https.

I UN-installed FF 52 and Installed FF 45.

It tossed me up a screen that said AdBlockPlus is available and would I like to add it.
Hell NO... I declined.  Screen print attached.

So appears that it is available somewhere but not installed now and not showing,
and this thread can be officially closed as solved (I guess) but it sure was buried in
deeper than an Alabama tick in a hound dog.

Thanks ALL for the help.

Interesting because it says another program  on your computer...
The address bar also shows about:newaddon

Let me see if I can find out what the mystery program is and where about:newaddon hides.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9

I can search XP from within my Win 7 computer and I did that to get the following.

Can you go to C:\Documents and Settings\Garry\Application Data\Mozilla\
at this point I have 3 subfolders: extensions, Firefox and SeaMonkey

Extensions is empty on mine.
Firefox has Crash Reports and Profiles.
In the only profile, I have an adblockplus folder and down further adblockplus-rules.json
I don't know why it is present unless another extension uses the same info.

I also have an extension folder under the profile and when I open that, I see 8 items. Most of the extensions are simply a set of alphanumeric strings. These are the xpi files. I had to figure out what each string represented.
AdBlockPlus starts with {08..
I don't have it installed because I've identified the strings.

Now I'm off to see about that newaddon id?={d10d...} to see what is trying to force ABP on you.

{d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d} is AdblockPlus.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9

I'm not sure why my notes say ABP starts with o8 because when I searched for {d10d0bf8-f5b5-c8b4-a8b2-2b9879e08c5d} it is AdBlockPlus.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 18, 2020, 09:12:30 PM
I did the search and it tossed up 880 system files.

Got a warning that I should not mess with system files
and I dont know a whole bunch about this stuff and a bit
apprehensive just deleting things willy-nilly.

I really dont know what all this stuff is and all the cryptic numbers associated with it.
Again, I am not that technical on this PC stuff

I did not find anything in the Extensions folder at top of page (1st screen print) but rolling down, I found browser extension data (on 1/19/2020) which I estimate the time I installed FF 52 and AdBlock just afterwards.
This matches the d10 string you mentioned in 2nd screen print attached below.

I did not find (in the 880 files) any string that started with 08...

AdBlock is not coming up on my version 45 of FF now when I boot up so do we really want to mess with it anymore?  Right now FF 45 is working great.

I forgot to ask you about the other UBlock thing you and Corrine suggested, if
that is a better choice and easy to install (or uninstall).

Thanks

As long as v 45 is working, I agree don't mess with 880 files from who knows what.

uBlockOrigin is easy to install.
I went here https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock-for-firefox-legacy/releases
downloaded the xpi file for version 1.16.4.18
I thought I'd have to do something but I got a popup window about installing and it installed.
As far as removing, any addon that I want to remove, I click a remove button or a trashcan. (I don't remember what FF v 45 looks like.
If you click Tools then addons, you will see 3 chocies to the right of each addon: options, disable and remove. (If it is the same as the Palemoon I use).

Thanks for the link for UBlock.  Will give it a whirl.
I did learn a few things like where to get old versions of stuff I would use so
thanks again for everyone who tried to help me out.

Regarding the 880 System files, I have had this machine for 14 years (bought
new) and it came Pre-loaded with all sorts of stuff since it was advertised as XP
Professional
.  Be it over the 14 years or initially, I have no idea what all this stuff
is. It had WORD but that was only a 30 day trial and they STILL try to sell it to me
if I open up a word doc and dont go thru Open Office to do it.  Many years ago, I
loaded Open Office and I use that.

Only thing I use that is not Open Office is Notepad and WordPad.

This machine said it had a 80 gig hard drive but ACER steals half of that for some
sort of backup and so as far as I am concerned, it was only a 40 gig usable drive
to me.  And even then it is not a full 40 gig split so where the rest of it is, I dont
know.  I try not to load any special tool bars or features or extensions and use this machine to
play games (mostly offline) but some online and I also use it to copy and make
Music CD's from my LP records before I sell the albums.  I go online to research stuff and started with Mozilla when IE 8 stopped support on it and many sites would not work with IE.

A totally different subject question though.

Not that I need it yet, but I only have 19 percent free space left and I know that
once I get under 15 percent I wont be able to do a Defrag.
I would like an opinion if I can get rid of some of the stuff I NEVER used and
would not know how to use it even if I wanted to.

This is to free up some space on the (usable) disc drive C (if and when I need it).

Attached are screen prints of my programs but the ones I would maybe like to get
rid of (or would I be asking for trouble if I do), are circled in red on the third screen print (to get some extra disc space once I go below 15 pct left).

They are Microsoft.NET Framework,
Microsoft SQL Server and
Microsoft Visual C++ items.

I have no idea what this stuff does or is and I think it maybe has something to do
with the XP Professional stuff on this Machine???
I would use the Control Panel Add or Remove Programs function to delete.

Any ballpark consensus if this would mess something up if I deleted this stuff?  I am not technical enough to put in a bigger or additional drive.

And again, thanks for all the help.

Don't remove any of the Visual C++ items. Yes it will mess up the computer.
I don't know about the SQL Server. I'll have to look into that.

Above the red box I see some MS Office items. If you don't use Office 2003 and 2007, why are those items on the computer?
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 21, 2020, 01:31:38 PM
I thought maybe MS office items Web components had something to do with getting online (as in Internet Explorer).  I dont know this stuff, maybe has something to do with Notepad and WordPad (Which I do use still).

But the big one is the .NET framework.  Lots of space to be had there.
.Net is NOT on my XP1 (20 year old) machine but then again it is not a Professional load.

Will leave the Visual C++ items alone then.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: plodr on February 22, 2020, 01:35:38 PM
My XP computer has Office 2007 so I can't check that because I'll see MS Office items.
My Windows 7 computer has LibreOffice. I also use Notepad and Wordpad and I do not have anything pertaining to MS Office so I think it is safe to remove them. (I'd make a restore point first).

According to my notes XP did not ship with .NET but my husband's offline XP has .NET 1.1. It probably came through with a Windows update when XP was still receiving updates. My occasionally online XP has .NET 1, 1.1 and 2.1.

I'm finishing up getting a computer ready for someone so I haven't had time to do any searching on the SQL issue. I'll get to it, I'm just not sure when.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9

The .NET Framework is required to run many Windows applications.  Uninstalling it may cause some applications to cease to function.  It is 'safe' to uninstall with that caveat (you can always reinstall).

There are three ways .NET Framework typically gets installed on a computer ... by default with Windows installation, an application that required it installed it automatically, or an application directed to a separate download site to install a particular version.

To remove all existing versions of .NET Framework from Windows XP, use 'Add or Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. Be sure to remove the latest version first. In your case, your computer has .NET versions 2.0 and 1.1 installed, so first remove 2.0 and then 1.1.

Note: Keep track of which versions of .NET were removed in case you need to download and reinstall these same versions from Microsoft.

BEFORE you do that, I trust you have already run the Microsoft Windows Disk Cleanup Utility, and deleted temporary files and no longer wanted video files.
Title: Re: How do I remove AdBlockPlus from FireFox 52.9
Post by: Kemosabe13 on February 22, 2020, 10:39:05 PM
Thanks for your opinions on my latest question.
Like I mentioned, I am at 19 pct and wont attempt to do any of this till I get below 15 percent.  And yes, I am familiar with Windows Disk Cleanup Utility, and I delete temporary files always before I do a shutdown.  Also keep track of Restore Points and Reg entry backups (every little bit counts).
I may also grab up a few of those USB stick drives for my photos I keep (and scanned) and also double back them up on a CD as a belt and suspenders thing and delete off pics and vids afterwards.  There is software for making DVD's on this machine but I have never used it... Just CD's.
I usually do the backups and transfer them over to a duplicate machine I have but both are old and can fail at any moment.  At one time, I had 3 XP machines but now I am down to TWO.
I was just looking for some quick room to get rid of stuff I didnt think I used.  I sorta remember the .NET stuff being on this machine from day one so I thought it came Pre-loaded from Acer.
Some of my games I loaded I can also get rid of in a pinch as those take up room as a last resort.  Again, thanks.

I found this for SQL Server 2005
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/909967/how-to-manually-uninstall-an-instance-of-sql-server-2005

I guess you can try to remove it through remove programs. Create a restore point in case something goes wrong.

Thanks Plodr,

Ya know, after thinking about Winchesters answer about disc cleanup, I went in and cleaned up restore points again and while I have used the system restore button cleanup More times than I can remember, I have NEVER used the Windows Components or Installed Programs option for fear of getting rid of something I would still use.
Does anybody know if these give you a list of what it will remove first (to select or UN-select)  or do they just work like the system restore points and just do stuff.

Would this be a safer way to remove stuff I dont use or need?
Use one at a time or both together???
Thanks

The Disk Cleanup tool is part of Windows ... it will perform a search on the hard disk for files that can be deleted from your computer without affecting/damaging its functionality or your personal files.

The dialog box will show you assorted items for you to check or un-check.  Clicking on an item will open up a description at the bottom of the window, so you can read up on that item if you like. There’s nothing in the Disk Cleanup tab to be concerned about, it doesn’t present you with options that would damage your computer or its performance.  Downloaded Program Files and Temporary Internet Files are a good place to start.

The More Options tab is a little trickier, I'd ignore the Windows Components section for now ... hopefully you'll free up enough space with the Disk Cleanup tab.

Perhaps you misread or I was not entirely clear.  I have used the Disc Cleanup (along with the System Restore Point cleanup) many times but was asking if Windows Components and Installed Programs cleanup buttons give me a list of choices before doing so (and if this would be a better way to free up more space).

I will take your suggestion about maybe NOT using the Windows Components but what about Installed programs?  Has anybody tried this?  Would it work better than UN-install programs?

(and of course, I would take a Restore Point before doing so).

I don't have time for updating fluff that will never be used on my PC, lean is good, less of a target for malware. No printing/scanning here, or any LAN file sharing, what I need/use is all that's left from the default W7 Pro install:

Just an update for Plodr...
I tried to install UBlock version 1.16.4.18 and after download, it would NOT Install.
Something to do that it did not have Add-On Signing.
Went to see if it was still in FF Extensions and Low and Behold, ADBLOCK was now there,
But as DISABLED and I was finally able to delete AdBlock.  No sign of any UBlock files, even
with a search for it.
I am now getting worse on space right now as I am down to 17 pct (was 19) so will abandon
trying to get UBlock to work as FF 45 still is working OK (even with the advertisements).

So I am down to 17 pct but all I have got rid of is in Disk Cleanup including old Restore Points
and deleted lots of videos I had saved over the years and also some folders of things I had created of saved things dating back to 2008 and still the 17 pct has not gone up.  Games will be next to go until I can get any clarification on using Disc Cleanup on INSTALLED PROGRAMS.
I cant imagine UBlock ate 2 pct of my drive but cant account for the sudden drop (and cant find UBlock if it is still hanging out in the Twilight Zone somewhere.)

Again, just the latest update.
So

Regarding the Installed Programs button ... clicking the Clean Up button opens the Add/Remove Programs window (the same one you see from the Control Panel).  It's just a convenient way to put everything in one place.

Likewise, the Windows Components button opens the Windows Components Wizard, which can also be found by opening Add/Remove Programs and then clicking the button Add/Remove Windows Components (on the left side of that window).  The wizard shows you batches of Windows components, not individual applications.

I suspect your free disk space will only increase if you remove some of the little used programs that are installed.

It has been so long since I used XP that I can't answer about cleanup on there.

Rather than delete files I no longer use, I erase them - overwriting them anywhere from 3 to 35 times.
I don't uninstall a program, I use Revo Uninstaller to remove a program. It uses the program's own uninstaller than goes through the registry and shows me what can be removed from there.

I don't have a problem with hard drive space. I store the majority of files off the computer.
The desktop I'm using is from 2009. It has a 150GB hard drive. It has two operating systems: XP and 7. There is at least 25% of free space in each partition.

If you would like, I would be happy to look at logs to see if there are left-over registry items and more that may help freeing up more space.  We can do it here in this thread rather than in the Analysis & Malware Removal forum.  The instructions are here:  Log Posting Instructions (https://www.landzdown.com/analysis-and-malware-removal/log-posting-instructions/).

Once again, thanks all for the answers and help.
Winchester, thanks for the clarification on the buttons.  Seems a different path to do the same thing thru Control Panel.

Plodr, A first look at Revo Uninstaller seems it is only a trial version.  I think I will take another deep look to unload pics and other files I keep to a USB stick to see if that nets me anything.
I will also Uninstall my games and start with the .NET items remove 2.0 and then 1.1 along with Office 2003 and 2007 (one at a time of course) with restore points.

Corrine, thanks for the offer.  Looks a bit involved(for me).  I just may look for a different machine with a larger hard drive and XP installed.  I used to have a local source but nor sure if he is still in business (as it has become a sketchy neighborhood).  He is a computer business so they are not stolen, just used RE-furbs with no guarantee (mostly Dells).
l really didnt even want to make this thread THIS long and I finally did get rid of AdBlockPlus solving initial thread question.
So again thanks all.

You download the Freeware If you have a spare USB stick, you can grab the portable version so you don't fill up your computer.
https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo-uninstaller-free-download/
Don't worry if it gives you a trial, it will revert to free and you can continue to use it.

In fact, I used the portable version to clean up a computer for someone the past 2 - 3 weeks. (Win 7 Pro).

I need to go out and buy a USB stick (or 2).  I never realized you could download this stuff to a stick drive instead of loading to your hard drive.

On another note, I still cant understand WHY I am uninstalling or deleting some old stuff, that I an not gaining any free space.  It is going the other way.  Still at 17 pct but free space is going down, not up.
Will give the revo thing a whirl, perhaps this weekend.
Thanks

Yes, moving some files to USB sticks is a good idea.  The offer is still open for FRST.  You merely download it to your desktop and run as Admin.  It produces two logs that you copy/paste as replies.  I look at the logs and provide instructions for FRST to clean.  (You can see examples in the Analysis & Malware Removal forum.

Perhaps it is still keeping copies because of using Restore points.

I always saw the Disk Cleanup Utility (More Options) System Restore Cleanup button gets rid of All restore points except the last Most current one).  I dont see the old ones (except the most current) so if it is still keeping copies (hidden) out there, I would not know where (and if) they are there.

I am still in the process of cleaning and backups of files on the stick drives and it is taking longer than I thought. I may not get to the REVO thing by this weekend but I am working on it.  I was down to 16 pct this morning but now up to 17 pct again.  I thought I would gain more faster, but I am doing copys before I delete the big stuff.  This machine, being old is not a fast processor so it takes a while.

Don't worry if it takes longer than you planned - most things do. We'll be here when you are ready.

Yes, I always copy then I make certain I can access the copy before I remove things. In fact, I make 2 or more copies of things I don't want to lose , like pictures.

Kemosabe,

I am sorry that I have not been able to chime in on your XP issues until now (and unfortunately even now my means are limited).  I am probably one of the few members here who has made consistent use of XP until my motherboard failed on me last month---and I am still working to resolve that issue!  (Sigh)  I use Windows 10 also but on a very under-powered computer it does not work very well.

At any rate for your present clean-up project you might want to try Treesize Free, version 3.4.5.  The web page is:  https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free .  Scroll all the way to the bottom for the proper link to this last version that works on XP.

This program will map out your computer and give you the relative sizes of everything on your disk drive.  From there you can go about deleting whatever you think that you might need to.

If I remember correctly from Freedomlist weren't you located in Texas?  I am in Austin.

You might also want to explore the following web site:  https://www.xpforums.com/ .

v_v that looks like a good resource! Thanks.
I'll send people that have XP problems there to have a look.

Thanks v_v.  Good to hear from you.  I remember you from Freedomlist back in the day of cheap dial-up connections and problem solving advice there.   Actually, not from Texas (as the Lone Ranger was) but from near the birthplace of Clayton Moore who played him.... Chicago area.

(Was wondering if you were still around somewhere).  It was you that pointed me over to LandzDown here.  I had a signin but forgot my password and lost my email addr for verification/reset so created a similar ID and account here just recently.

I am still working on my clean-ups and backups and getting close to try the clean-up site(s) suggested.  Right now I am UP TO 24 pct freespace and still have NOT tried REVO yet.  Also in search of another XP replacement machine (locally), one with a bigger hard drive and more memory in case this one goes south.  That next one will be XP number 7.   ;D

Will post my results (eventually) when I have a final.
Again, thanks everyone for all the helpful advice.

Final Update on my space issue and deletions.

WOW, that Revo software really gets rid of a lot of residuals and worked great.
I got rid of the .NET items and MS Office (since I use Open Office) and found a few other things I had out there that I have not used in years.  Cleaned up my games (many many registry residuals cleaned on those) and so far, everything seems to work just fine
Machine even seems to boot up quicker and now I got 30 pct free space so wont run low for a while.
Eventually, once I clean out all the restore points I took, probably will realize even more space.

Thanks to ALL here for the help.   :D

Thanks for the update BUT, now that you've found your way back here, stop in on occasion just to say hi.  After all, the old FL gang needs to stick together.  :)

Plus, when you do finally decide t get a new PC, you'll likely have questions.
