Logitech M310 wireless mouse has lost middle click function
« on: March 21, 2021, 02:37:52 AM »
My Logitech M310 wireless mouse has always opened a link in a new tab when I click the middle button (scroll wheel).  It suddenly stopped working, probably after a Windows update, although I don't know for sure that it is related to that.

I've lost the behavior on all browsers, so I don't think its an Edge problem.

I can't find any mouse option in Windows 10  that addresses this. Windows says I have the best driver when I tried to update the driver in the device manager. Troubleshooter doesn't detect any issues.  So this is what I've tried.... I changed the USB plug to another port. I tried blowing dust out from around the mouse wheel, but none of that fixed anything.  I didn't try uninstalling from the device manager and then rebooting because that seemed scary. So maybe I need to try that before anything else?

I can use the right click menu to perform the same function, but its two clicks instead of one, so I'd like to have it back.

I am wondering if I should update the mouse driver from the Logitech site.  I found the latest driver downloads here:
https://logidrivers.com/logitech-m310/

My question is did I find the right drivers? And if so, should I use the  64 one that is an .exe  or the smart installer.exe?  I'm not sure what the difference is since they are both .exe files. Does the smart installer just mean it will figure out which version I need?

Also, if it doesn't fix the problem, then should I go back and re-install the old driver which I'm assuming is stored somewhere on my hard drive, and how do I do that?

Just need to be walked through the right sequence. Thanks for any help!

Does "middle click" work for other functions (eg Scroll)?
If not ...
Did you try a different mouse to rule out a "wear & tear" problem?

I'm using an old mouse which doesn't have the feature you want.

I have a workaround until you get this feature working again: hold down the ctrl key when you click a link, This will open in a new tab if your browser is set to open a new tab when you click on a link.

The scroll function of the middle wheel works fine.  Just nothing happens now when you click it.

plodr, thanks for the workaround

Tested with a mouse that connects by USB, and the middle click does work to open a new window.  So I guess I should take the mouse apart and give the wheel a good cleaning and see what happens.  I'll report back when I get that accomplished.

OK, so took the mouse apart and got the lint and dust out from around the wheel.  After re-assembly, middle wheel still scrolls fine, but no joy on the click function.

Since the other mouse that connected directly to the computer port did work to open new tab when middle wheel was clicked,  does that mean its a software issue with the wireless mouse?

I wasn't referring to rotating the wheel.
Put the cursor on a blank area (not a link).
"middle click"
Does a circle containing "up/down" arrows appear, and moving the cursor up or down make it scroll?

Nothing appears when I click the middle button (wheel) in a blank area. The icon remains as a pointer.  Same result if I do it on a link.  Hand icon stays a hand.

Could be a dirty or damaged contact under the wheel.
I had to retire my favorite mouse when a contact went bad.

In your place I'd wait until after the week-end, to see if the software/driver experts can help before giving up.

Another work around is to "right-click" the link, and pick what you want to do from the drop-down menu.

Ok, will wait for more input.  I guess my question about the software is do I  uninstall the driver and reboot first, or just move on to installing the driver from the logitech download site.  And I would need the sequence spelled out for me.

I had been using the right click option, but I like plodr's workaround better.  I could probably even get used to that if I had to.  I could use the old mouse, but I like not being tethered to the tower.

Wired mouse works. Wireless mouse doesn't.
In that case, I'd put the blame on the mouse rather than Windows 10.

I have not installed any mouse software nor drivers for a long, long time on any computer. I just put in the USB dongle and start using the mouse. The old, old, mouse I'm currently using is from sometime in the 1990's. This is the USB receiver and it is working on a Windows 7 computer.

I presume you have restarted the computer at some point.

A dislodged spring can cause the scroll wheel to spin freely without any resistance instead of the proper ratcheting behavior.  Does yours seem correct now that you have put it back together?

Have you replaced the mouse batteries?  Have you unplugged the USB unifying receiver for 5 seconds and plugged it back in?  Might also try removing both the receiver AND batteries for 5 seconds.

Does this mouse work properly on a different computer?  Do you have another wireless mouse to try on this computer?

I doubt changing the USB port will make a difference.

Looking at the Logitech website, the last driver update was:

Software Version: 1.2.169
Last Update: 2019-08-20

What driver do you have installed?  You said that Microsoft says you have the latest one ...

That logidrivers website you linked is NOT the official Logitech support site.  Rather, it is https://support.logi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024848573--Downloads-Wireless-Mouse-M310

I'm with plodr, it likely isn't a Windows 10 issue, but it's worth trying all of the above if you haven't already done so.

Tried erasing its mind by unplugging both battery and the USB insert. No effect.

Computer reboot with mouse unplugged and removed battery and then restarted after reboot. No effect.

I disabled the ratcheting spring on the wheel a long time ago.  Its there, just not engaged with the wheel.  The middle click has worked fine for a year or two before this problem started.

Mouse batteries are fresh.

Info from device manager on what mouse driver is installed:
HID-compliant mouse
C:\WINDOWS\system\DRIVERS\mouclass.sys

Device manager:  I again pressed the update driver button > search automatically for drivers - [Windows will search your computer for the best available driver and install it on your device]  and this is the message:
Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. There may be better drivers on Windows Update or on the device manufacturer's website.

I see that there is an option to roll back if I install a new driver that doesn't work. So that is comforting.

This may be interesting data, because it was around this time that I noticed the middle click wasn't opening links or closing tabs anymore.
Under events:
3/6/2021  Device migrated
3/6/2021  Device configured
3/6/2021  Device configured (msmouse.inf)
3/6/2021  Device started (mouhid)

If the next step is to replace the driver, then I will need some help with  the download page--I'm finding it confusing. When  you open the "show all" link, there are two versions of Software Version: 1.2.169 with the same date as the top download.  Although maybe I'm making it harder than it has to be, since it states"autodetected OS"  where it shows the download button.

Please post the link to the download page you are looking at.

Also, if you look through the history of your updates, do you notice any mouse driver update listed on March 6th?
I'm still running Windows 7 and I have refused driver updates for decades - in fact, since I was running Windows 2000.

This link that Winchester posted above:

https://support.logi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024848573--Downloads-Wireless-Mouse-M310

It seems to have a an automatic detection for what you need, so you may not see the same download I see.

History shows only cumulative and security updates.
