Malwarebytes Won't Update

Howdy al! Been a while...

I just posted this problem in the GW Computer Help forum, but almost forgot my dear and clever friends here, so again...


Running W7. Yesterday I tried to run my weekly scan with MWB and it offered me an updated program, which I took. It downloaded and installed smoothly. Then when I tried to scan, the "Check for updates" icon rotated continuously. I tried several times, and after a ridiculous 15 minutes of watching and waiting, did a complete uninstall and a fresh install from their home site. But same problem.

Just ran an Avast scan for trojans/malware, and it found none. Also a Windows Defender scan. Clean too.

Any suggestions? :sos:

Hi, Shax.

I'm glad you thought about us.  :)  It looks like you're going to need to run mbam-clean.exe.  If it doesn't prompt you to restart your computer, you'll want to restart and then try reinstalling Malwarebytes.  Note:  If you're using the fee version, be sure to uncheck the box for the free trial.

I just tried to download from your link (a few times), but it keeps giving me the "FAILED" message.
Oh, and yes, I'm painfully aware about unchecking that free trial box!

OK. Finally able to download your link, ran it then re-installed MBAM, but same result...it's been promising to check for updates for more than 8 minutes now, with no progress.

Time to ditch it for now, I reckon. Do you have a recommendation for a substitute free anti-malware program?

Lavasoft maybe but it has a antivirus built in but that can be bypassed. I have an inside contact there and ask her for you. :thumbsup:

Based on the last AV-Comparatives review I read, Lavasoft had a lot of false/positives.  See the attached image capture from the PDF at AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test - AV-Comparatives

I was having a problem reaching the MBAM forums earlier so perhaps their servers are particularly busy.  Why not give it another try later.

Yes, I was going to raise that. Meanwhile check the following link for MBAM. Don't know what time is wherever you are but here it is 12:20 5 July (Sydney, Australia).

I check it every day even though I do not have any problems and my PC updated to the latest level. The only thing I do is shut down the application that is being updated and then restart the PC after. HTH

Pierre, I am also in Australia (not Sydney, but same time zone).

I left the MWB running in the background while I did other work, and incredibly, after 26 minutes, it has progressed from checking for updates, to now doing the expected scan! Maybe I should learn to be more patient in future... :breakkie:

I can explain that. The new version was only just released to all users so there would have been a heavy call on their servers. After that it would have distributed the updates. Hence the delay - patience is a virtue. Glad to have been of some help. I will cancel the contact to Lavasoft.

BTW I am not French but born in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1940 and the family migrated to Australia in 1951. I have kept up my Dutch language. Just for your interest.

Dankjewel. Nu begrijp ik het! One of my brothers has been living in the Netherlands (Landsmeer) for 40 years. I've visited him there many times. Beautiful country and great people.
