Missing Items on Start Menu
« on: September 10, 2012, 07:58:38 PM »
Hopefully somebody can help!
My friend has lost all programs on her Start Menu - she's tried to
System Restore but no luck.

It happened after removing an application - however she can't remember what....

It's a Windows 7 home premium laptop, 64bit.

Hi, Andy.

If there is any suspicion of malware, please follow through with providing the requested logs in the Log Posting Instructions topic.

First things first, if your friend managed to get one of the rogue HDD infections, make sure that she does not clear Temp files!  In the event the problem was caused by malware and the files were "hidden", let's start with Unhide.exe.  Following are the instructions:
  • Please download unhide.exe ... by Grinler.  Save it to your desktop.
This program will remove the +H or hidden, attribute from all the files on your hard drives.
If there are files, purposely hidden by you, you will need to hide them again after this tool is run.
  • Right-click unhide.exe on the desktop, selecting Run as Administrator to run it.

With assistance from other members of the security community, Grinler created some special scripts to restore the default Start Menu.  This version is for Windows 7 64-bit US English:  http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/fakehdd/win7-x64-sm-reset.exe
