It would also be helpful to everyone if you supplied your computer make and model number,
I second that!

I try and help people who post with issues but you make it hard when you fail to give us information about your hardware. At this point, all we know is that you own an HP laptop. It is useless to look at thread about HP desktops thinking that would help with an HP laptop. The hardware is different!

I assume you did not make any sort of image BEFORE you decided to upgrade to 10? If you had, that would have fixed the problem in under an hour.

Even though Windows 7 is no longer receiving security updates, I still make images about every 4 weeks because browser and programs like Malwarebytes are getting new versions.

I haven't owned an HP in a long time so I don't know if you had this ability but my eMachine desktop and Acer laptops had a program from the manufacturer to make a recovery DVD and also program and driver CDs. I did all of those even before I connected the computers to the internet.

this will work Winchester
external USB wifi adapter laptop

I have no idea what this means.

Why would you need an external wifi adapter?  Your wifi used to work, why not fix what you have?

I presume you can connect via an ethernet cable and everything is OK.

Details would be helpful.

Have you tried uninstalling the update that gave you problems?  Or use system restore to go back in time?

Still waiting on the information everyone has asked for ...

No clue, it depends on 1) if HP has one on this particular as not all laptops have a physical WiFi switch (or the option to turn the WiFi card on/off), and 2) where they decided to put it (physical switch, sometimes it's a keyboard key-combination...)

You haven't told us which laptop model this is, among other information, after several requests. Seeing you've ordered a USB adapter, I hope it works and you're able to get it back on your WiFi. Good luck!

hayc59,

As winchester73 and aaron have said you are making it extremely hard for us to assist you.  Not being an expert I would certainly defer to any suggestions that the others might have.  Member Digerati has not chimed in on this discussion but if I remember rightly he may have more hardware insight that others of us.

But I for one do not think that it is so much of a hardware issue.  If everything worked fine before a Windows 10 update and then failed to work after the update then it does seem to be more of a software driver or settings issue.  Yes wireless cards can go bad at any given moment so that cannot be ruled out.  But from the meager descriptions you have supplied it just does not seem to be a hardware issue.  However if your Netgear USB adapter fixes the issue then all the better for you and us!  (Smile)

I did a quick 30 second search using "wireless card for hp laptop" and it seems that for between $5 and $10 you could get a new wireless card with free shipping.  This would seem to be cheap enough even for you, if necessary.  What also showed up in that search were some videos with directions for replacing the wireless card on an HP laptop.  After watching one of these even I felt confident enough to give it a try, especially if as you said you are going to end up with an expensive paperweight.  The replacement process seems to be mostly a matter of removing screws, opening the bottom of the laptop, removing and replacing a very small card, etc.  Looking at the video it seemed relatively simple.  You might want to at least view the available videos.

Other possible options are to do a clean installation of Windows.  For me this would be the last resort if everything else fails.  For this you would go to Settings, Update & Security, and Recovery.  A clean install shows up on the right side of the screen under "More recovery options", "learn how to start fresh with a clean installation of Windows."

But if you could calm yourself from the "*ticking* me off" phase, practice a little patience, and help us help you by supplying the computer model number, and other such data as requested we might be able to assist you better and perhaps save you from making unnecessary expenditures, major changes (reinstallations), etc.  If you know how to use the Windows snipping tool or the snip & sketch tool you could further help us by posting images of what you see on your screens, like Winchester73 did for you earlier.  This would help us immensely.

Otherwise all that we can do is to repeat what Aaron said, "Good luck!"

hayc59,

Well we have a model number now.  Good deal.  But that pretty much nullifies the cheaper cards that I saw.  For instance this $5.70 card at walmart does not look like it matches up with the hp pavilion G6:

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/7265NGW-Intel-Dual-Band-WIRELESS-AC-7265-Wlan-Bluetooth-4-0-Wifi-Card-793839-001-Laptop-Wireless-Cards-Wifi/337539540?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7860&adid=22222222227297923019&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=367251624141&wl4=pla-786052974608&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117584434&wl11=online&wl12=337539540&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo8XylpDx6AIVio3ICh0q-A9sEAQYBiABEgL4-PD_BwE ",

nor does this one for $5.95,

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/7265NGW-Intel-Dual-Band-WIRELESS-AC-7265-Wlan-Bluetooth-4-0-Wifi-Card-793839-001-Laptop-Wireless-Cards-Wifi/337539540?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7860&adid=22222222227297923019&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=367251624141&wl4=pla-786052974608&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117584434&wl11=online&wl12=337539540&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo8XylpDx6AIVio3ICh0q-A9sEAQYBiABEgL4-PD_BwE ".

However this one for $9.99 appears to match the G6:

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/709848-001-Hp-Wireless-Card-11-E015DX-15-E043CL-15-F211WM/817094555?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7657&adid=22222222227272552762&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=327839053393&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-619181945913&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=118787750&wl11=online&wl12=817094555&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-53ws5jx6AIVE4nICh3uhQObEAQYAyABEgIKdPD_BwE ".

There is a similar model at Ebay for $14.90 ($9.95 + $4.95 shipping):

" https://www.ebay.com/itm/NewGenuine-HP-Pavilion-G6-G7-Intel-Centrino-Wireless-N-1030-WLAN-Card-631956-001/310951898758?epid=1537074528&hash=item48662d6e86:g:kxoAAOxyYANTakpw ".

That is why having model numbers and such is so important!

These two models match two of the videos that I have seen:

and

The steps taken in the videos also match the steps in the official maintenance manual at:

On page 49 of the manual (it seems to be 59 in the pdf) there is what appears to be a list of compatible wlan modules (cards).  You could do further price shopping for some of those modules.

Having said all of that though, I am still not sure that you really have a hardware problem.  I am of the view that the Windows 10 update tweaked something and perhaps turned something off that it should not have.

But one of the things that you can do without buying a new card first is just removing the old card as I suggested before, maybe cleaning it of any dust or whatever and reinstalling it to see what that might do.  The two videos together do a decent job of quick education and the manual complements them very well.

I would say be patient.  Some of the more experienced members might be better able to assist now that we have a model number to work with.

You mentioned about not being able to post pictures.  You do not need a camera for that.  You simply need to learn how to use the Windows Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch.  (For right now I still prefer the Snipping Tool.)

Go to and click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner.  Scroll down to Windows Accessories and click the little down pointing arrow at the right.  Several subsidiary programs will appear.  Scroll down to Snipping Tool and click it.  A small window will pop up that will have the name "Snipping Tool".  You can use this tool to "take a picture" or a "snip" of whatever is immediately on your screen.

To do this have the particular screen already up, then open the Snipping Tool as above.  In the pop up click "New".  Your screen will change color slightly and sort of "white out" a little.  This tells you that the snipping tool is activated.

Now move your mouse cursor and you will see that the cursor is now a little cross.  Take the cross to the top left corner of whatever part of the screen that you wish to "capture", "snip", or "take a picture of".  Once you get to the top left corner hold down the left button on your mouse and move in a diagonal line towards the bottom right hand corner of the area that you wish to snip.  You will see that a little rectangle will appear and that it will surround whatever you are trying to snip.  Once you get the area completely covered by the rectangle then release the left button of the mouse.  At that point the snipped image will appear in the pop up.

Now you can save that snip, image, or picture as a graphics file, probably as a " .png ", but also as a " .gif " or " .jpg " if desired.  Give it a name before you save it and remember where you save it.  You can save it to your desktop or anywhere else that you choose.

From there, since I have never done this myself, perhaps some of the more experienced members here can help with how to get that picture into your message.  (I was able to attach an image of where the "insert image" icon is on the message screen.  It is right below the "B" [for bold] icon.  See the attachment below.)

This is all a lot simpler than it sounds and if you fiddle with the steps a bit you should get the hang of it fairly quickly.

But once you are able to post images of what is immediately on your screen, then others like Winchester73, Aaron, etc can far better assist you.  You will be able to answer their questions more thoroughly by showing them exactly what you see on your screen.

Okay that is all that I can muster tonight.  It is way past my bedtime!

By 'button' do you mean a keyboard key or a physical switch (like power button)?

Try pressing the FN key located at the bottom left of the keyboard and the F# key that is orange

Was the light white or blue?

G6 doesn't tell the entire story. Turn the laptop over and look at the model on the label on the bottom.
Here are just a few of the g6 models:
g6-1d70us
g6-1a50us
g6-1d60us
g6-1b70us
g6-1007sx
If memory serves me correctly, the last time I helped someone with this series of laptops there were at least a dozen different models.

I specifically searched your last reply, "The wifi button is on the keypad F12 and it was always white in color now a bright orange" and saw a number of results that had the same instructions as below and a number  of people said it solved their problem:

Quote
I had the same problem. The wireless switch previously worked just fine. When Windows is booting up, press the wireless switch (orange light).

You will see it turn blue and then the wireless will act normally.

Note: You must press the orange button right when Window is booting. Otherwise, when Windows is fully up and running, the orange button will not turn blue no matter how often you press it.

Worth a try!
