Have you checked with HP on updated wifi card drivers for Windows 10? (Or 8/8.1 if they don't have 10?) Does it even show up in Device Manager? If it does, does it say it has any issues?

Could try rolling back the update...

Offhand, format and install Windows 7. Do you have recovery media / a Windows 7 install CD/USB?

You may want to go through the steps here:  Fix network connection issues in Windows - Windows Help (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10741/windows-fix-network-connection-issues).

Out of curiosity, I just checked my WiFi, and fortunately, it's still working.   (I routinely use an Ethernet cable, so I would never have realized if the WiFi "disappeared").
I also did the Win10 update yesterday... so it's not a universal issue impacting all users.   (I realize this won't help you... but for others who may be wondering...)

What wifi card? What drivers you tried? Did you try deleting the device and then have Windows find it fresh?

I presume you already did the obvious thing ... reboot and see if the wifi connection is restored automatically

What networking icon do you see in the task bar?

I presume you followed the steps in the line Corrine posted earlier.

Settings > Network & Internet

Do you see the Wi-Fi section on the left side?

What do you mean by icon for ethernet?

Do you see the attached?

If the Wi-Fi tab is missing, it means your wifi card isn't being found, or something is preventing Windows from seeing it.  Sometimes a required service isn't running, or the driver is not compatible with the Windows update.

Let's check the service is running ...

Start > type Services and click on the Services app that appears.  In the Services window, scroll down to find the WLAN AutoConfig service.

Is the status 'running' and the startup 'automatic'?

If not, right click and select Properties.  Under General, select Automatic as startup type, and then click Start.  Hit Apply then OK.

If no joy, let's check the driver ...

Start > Menu, type Device Manager and click on the Device Manager/Control Panel that shows up.  Go down to Network Adapters, and expand to reveal the list.  Locate your Wireless card, right-click and open up Properties.  Switch to the Driver tab and note your driver details in case you have to see if there is an update on the manufacturer website.  Go back to the Wireless Card, right click and select ‘Update driver’.

I am not an expert and there are no device details to work with other than HP Pavillion.  But if you are confident with messing with your hardware give this a try.

Make sure you de-static or "ground" yourself before touching any of your computer insides every time you do something.

If your pavillion is a desktop, after you turn it off and unplug it, try identifying your wireless card if that is what you have.  If you find such a card, carefully remove it.  Then reboot your computer as usual.

After rebooting and stabilizing, shut down your computer and unplug it again.  Reinstall your wireless card, and reboot your computer.

The hope here is that somehow just reinstalling and re-seating the card in this manner will trick Windows 10 into recognizing it.

Let us know.

It would also be helpful to everyone if you supplied your computer make and model number, and also the make and model number of any wireless card, if that is what you have.

I second that!

I try and help people who post with issues but you make it hard when you fail to give us information about your hardware. At this point, all we know is that you own an HP laptop. It is useless to look at thread about HP desktops thinking that would help with an HP laptop. The hardware is different!

I assume you did not make any sort of image BEFORE you decided to upgrade to 10? If you had, that would have fixed the problem in under an hour.

Even though Windows 7 is no longer receiving security updates, I still make images about every 4 weeks because browser and programs like Malwarebytes are getting new versions.

I haven't owned an HP in a long time so I don't know if you had this ability but my eMachine desktop and Acer laptops had a program from the manufacturer to make a recovery DVD and also program and driver CDs. I did all of those even before I connected the computers to the internet.

Why would you need an external wifi adapter?  Your wifi used to work, why not fix what you have?

I presume you can connect via an ethernet cable and everything is OK.

Details would be helpful.

No clue, it depends on 1) if HP has one on this particular as not all laptops have a physical WiFi switch (or the option to turn the WiFi card on/off), and 2) where they decided to put it (physical switch, sometimes it's a keyboard key-combination...)

You haven't told us which laptop model this is, among other information, after several requests. Seeing you've ordered a USB adapter, I hope it works and you're able to get it back on your WiFi. Good luck!

hayc59,

As winchester73 and aaron have said you are making it extremely hard for us to assist you.  Not being an expert I would certainly defer to any suggestions that the others might have.  Member Digerati has not chimed in on this discussion but if I remember rightly he may have more hardware insight that others of us.

But I for one do not think that it is so much of a hardware issue.  If everything worked fine before a Windows 10 update and then failed to work after the update then it does seem to be more of a software driver or settings issue.  Yes wireless cards can go bad at any given moment so that cannot be ruled out.  But from the meager descriptions you have supplied it just does not seem to be a hardware issue.  However if your Netgear USB adapter fixes the issue then all the better for you and us!  (Smile)

I did a quick 30 second search using "wireless card for hp laptop" and it seems that for between $5 and $10 you could get a new wireless card with free shipping.  This would seem to be cheap enough even for you, if necessary.  What also showed up in that search were some videos with directions for replacing the wireless card on an HP laptop.  After watching one of these even I felt confident enough to give it a try, especially if as you said you are going to end up with an expensive paperweight.  The replacement process seems to be mostly a matter of removing screws, opening the bottom of the laptop, removing and replacing a very small card, etc.  Looking at the video it seemed relatively simple.  You might want to at least view the available videos.

Other possible options are to do a clean installation of Windows.  For me this would be the last resort if everything else fails.  For this you would go to Settings, Update & Security, and Recovery.  A clean install shows up on the right side of the screen under "More recovery options", "learn how to start fresh with a clean installation of Windows."

But if you could calm yourself from the "*ticking* me off" phase, practice a little patience, and help us help you by supplying the computer model number, and other such data as requested we might be able to assist you better and perhaps save you from making unnecessary expenditures, major changes (reinstallations), etc.  If you know how to use the Windows snipping tool or the snip & sketch tool you could further help us by posting images of what you see on your screens, like Winchester73 did for you earlier.  This would help us immensely.

Otherwise all that we can do is to repeat what Aaron said, "Good luck!"

hayc59,

Well we have a model number now.  Good deal.  But that pretty much nullifies the cheaper cards that I saw.  For instance this $5.70 card at walmart does not look like it matches up with the hp pavilion G6:

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/7265NGW-Intel-Dual-Band-WIRELESS-AC-7265-Wlan-Bluetooth-4-0-Wifi-Card-793839-001-Laptop-Wireless-Cards-Wifi/337539540?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7860&adid=22222222227297923019&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=367251624141&wl4=pla-786052974608&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117584434&wl11=online&wl12=337539540&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo8XylpDx6AIVio3ICh0q-A9sEAQYBiABEgL4-PD_BwE ",

nor does this one for $5.95,

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/7265NGW-Intel-Dual-Band-WIRELESS-AC-7265-Wlan-Bluetooth-4-0-Wifi-Card-793839-001-Laptop-Wireless-Cards-Wifi/337539540?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7860&adid=22222222227297923019&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=367251624141&wl4=pla-786052974608&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=117584434&wl11=online&wl12=337539540&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIo8XylpDx6AIVio3ICh0q-A9sEAQYBiABEgL4-PD_BwE ".

However this one for $9.99 appears to match the G6:

" https://www.walmart.com/ip/709848-001-Hp-Wireless-Card-11-E015DX-15-E043CL-15-F211WM/817094555?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=7657&adid=22222222227272552762&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=327839053393&wl4=aud-430887228898:pla-619181945913&wl5=9028321&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=118787750&wl11=online&wl12=817094555&veh=sem&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-53ws5jx6AIVE4nICh3uhQObEAQYAyABEgIKdPD_BwE ".

There is a similar model at Ebay for $14.90 ($9.95 + $4.95 shipping):

" https://www.ebay.com/itm/NewGenuine-HP-Pavilion-G6-G7-Intel-Centrino-Wireless-N-1030-WLAN-Card-631956-001/310951898758?epid=1537074528&hash=item48662d6e86:g:kxoAAOxyYANTakpw ".

That is why having model numbers and such is so important!

These two models match two of the videos that I have seen:

and

The steps taken in the videos also match the steps in the official maintenance manual at:

On page 49 of the manual (it seems to be 59 in the pdf) there is what appears to be a list of compatible wlan modules (cards).  You could do further price shopping for some of those modules.

Having said all of that though, I am still not sure that you really have a hardware problem.  I am of the view that the Windows 10 update tweaked something and perhaps turned something off that it should not have.

But one of the things that you can do without buying a new card first is just removing the old card as I suggested before, maybe cleaning it of any dust or whatever and reinstalling it to see what that might do.  The two videos together do a decent job of quick education and the manual complements them very well.

I would say be patient.  Some of the more experienced members might be better able to assist now that we have a model number to work with.

You mentioned about not being able to post pictures.  You do not need a camera for that.  You simply need to learn how to use the Windows Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch.  (For right now I still prefer the Snipping Tool.)

Go to and click on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner.  Scroll down to Windows Accessories and click the little down pointing arrow at the right.  Several subsidiary programs will appear.  Scroll down to Snipping Tool and click it.  A small window will pop up that will have the name "Snipping Tool".  You can use this tool to "take a picture" or a "snip" of whatever is immediately on your screen.

To do this have the particular screen already up, then open the Snipping Tool as above.  In the pop up click "New".  Your screen will change color slightly and sort of "white out" a little.  This tells you that the snipping tool is activated.

Now move your mouse cursor and you will see that the cursor is now a little cross.  Take the cross to the top left corner of whatever part of the screen that you wish to "capture", "snip", or "take a picture of".  Once you get to the top left corner hold down the left button on your mouse and move in a diagonal line towards the bottom right hand corner of the area that you wish to snip.  You will see that a little rectangle will appear and that it will surround whatever you are trying to snip.  Once you get the area completely covered by the rectangle then release the left button of the mouse.  At that point the snipped image will appear in the pop up.

Now you can save that snip, image, or picture as a graphics file, probably as a " .png ", but also as a " .gif " or " .jpg " if desired.  Give it a name before you save it and remember where you save it.  You can save it to your desktop or anywhere else that you choose.

From there, since I have never done this myself, perhaps some of the more experienced members here can help with how to get that picture into your message.  (I was able to attach an image of where the "insert image" icon is on the message screen.  It is right below the "B" [for bold] icon.  See the attachment below.)

This is all a lot simpler than it sounds and if you fiddle with the steps a bit you should get the hang of it fairly quickly.

But once you are able to post images of what is immediately on your screen, then others like Winchester73, Aaron, etc can far better assist you.  You will be able to answer their questions more thoroughly by showing them exactly what you see on your screen.

Okay that is all that I can muster tonight.  It is way past my bedtime!

By 'button' do you mean a keyboard key or a physical switch (like power button)?

Try pressing the FN key located at the bottom left of the keyboard and the F# key that is orange

Was the light white or blue?

G6 doesn't tell the entire story. Turn the laptop over and look at the model on the label on the bottom.
Here are just a few of the g6 models:
g6-1d70us
g6-1a50us
g6-1d60us
g6-1b70us
g6-1007sx
If memory serves me correctly, the last time I helped someone with this series of laptops there were at least a dozen different models.

I specifically searched your last reply, "The wifi button is on the keypad F12 and it was always white in color now a bright orange" and saw a number of results that had the same instructions as below and a number  of people said it solved their problem:

Quote
I had the same problem. The wireless switch previously worked just fine. When Windows is booting up, press the wireless switch (orange light).

You will see it turn blue and then the wireless will act normally.

Note: You must press the orange button right when Window is booting. Otherwise, when Windows is fully up and running, the orange button will not turn blue no matter how often you press it.

Worth a try!

You’re certain you think. You’re having a bubble, and I needed a laugh today, thanks ;D  ;D

As for images to post, perhaps the ones referenced earlier that you couldn’t because you only had a flip phone? Hence the suggestion about the snipping tool option, an easy way to upload pictures via the “Attachments and other options” button at the bottom of the post reply box.

hayc59,

Perhaps some of the information on the following two web pages may be of help:  " https://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/fix-no-wifi-available-after-windows-10-update.html " and " https://www.drivethelife.com/windows-10/wifi-adapter-not-showing-up-windows-10-creators-update.html ".

The pages are clearly trying to promote the sale of some driver fixing software (Driver Talent) but some of the possible fixes do not require their software, and there appears to be some decent explanatory information in the first link as to the 'why' of the problem.

From the second page link it also appears that your usb adapter potential solution should fix the problem too (Way 6).

I also found a couple of informative videos at " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofzUtvfemzg " and " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJG42GuzI48 ".  The first one is quite old (2015) but it picks up on the theme in the first web page link above about installed vpn software being a problem with Windows 10 updates.  The second video presents numerous possible solutions with the last one being a restore.  I cannot vouch for any of the solutions or thoughts presented but they do seem to make it clear your problem has been experienced by others.

As to Winchester's repeated suggestion about posting pictures or images, surely some of the questions he asked in earlier posts could be answered with pictures.  Also if you go through the two videos above there are some pages in the video which if you posted the images of those pages from your computer, it would be very helpful.  These pages would be like the "Network & Internet" page, the change adapter options page, the network and sharing page center page, etc.  Again, these images would help us to see what you see and therefore to better assist.

You can turn off Windows Updates ability to update drivers. I recommend it. One should get drivers, only from the manufacturer of said hardware.

Those driver update programs can cause more trouble than they help.

Hit start, type device installation, change device Installation Settings should show and you click this. Choose No.  The sentence in parentheses is not true.

Hopefully this will prevent these issues in the future. You will  have to check the setting periodically as it will reset after every major feature update.

I learned this from another very educated and experienced user on other forums named jenae, I'm sure Corrine can vouch for him.

Sorry, I haven't had any luck finding info on g6-1d48dy. The closest hit I get is for the g6-1d48dx model. Probably because I am in the US.
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03217952

Here's a thread from 2015 where people with g6 models lost wifi after upgrading from 7 to 10. No solution to the problem.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/windows-10-hp-pavilion-g6-wifi-crash/e8986196-974e-4bed-87e1-725cb991dfa6

I doubt the wifi stopped working; it is probably a case of a bad/wrong driver.

Can someone walk him through the steps of rolling back a driver in Windows 10? I don't run 10 so don't want to post something I can't try myself.

You can always plug it back in if the Wi-Fi doesn't work, G.  Give it a shot and let us know how it works out.

No clue what an 'adulator' is ... but to confirm, you have wifi connection with the 'adulator' unplugged?  If so, you have the "new paper weight" you referred to back on page 3.  On the same page (and going forward) there were multiple suggestions to fix the problem without introducing a new variable.  Don't fully understand what you did and didn't do, so hard to say why your wifi card is working again.

It sounds to me like you restarted the computer without any effect, but now you’ve done a hard boot via the power switch, and that ran a POST (Power-On Self-Test), which allowed Windows to recognize and repair the issue.  A hard boot can resolve many issues.

"Just fired up the laptop and the WiFi button on the keyboard is back to a bright white instead of orange"

Believe the wifi card was turned off (orange light), and so Windows did exactly what it was supposed to do, remove the device given it is no longer active ('installed'). When the card was turned on (white light), Windows added the device back and starting using it. This is like unplugging and plugging in a USB device, except it's a keyboard combination that does this rather than physically removing/inserting anything.

Why did it get switched off, and how did it get switched back on? No idea. Maybe the wifi card was loose and now is back in the slot properly (whether it's 'loose' loose, or thermal expansion/contraction over time has slightly unseated it and it just needed to be reseated, or bumped just right, or ...), maybe there's a 'helper' app on the system (the internet suggests it could be called "Mobility Center") that can also flip the card on and off (maybe it has some automatic trigger that says turn the card off if...) and that option in the app was switched to on, the internet suggests [Fn] + [F12] as the key combination to flip wifi off and on (and it may also control Bluetooth), so maybe that was done, maybe ....... pure guessing.

Regardless, glad it's working.

Okay, maybe I am confused here.  I am reading that hayc59 has his usb wifi plugged in and has a good connection.  So when Winchester73 asks, "Does Windows see the wifi adapter in Device Manager now?", isn't what shows up in Device Manager going to be directly related to the usb wifi and NOT to the original wifi card?

To say and ask it a different way, hayc599, when you answered Winchester73's question with "by golly it does" did you unplug the usb wifi first as Corrine suggested?  Or did you answer Winchester73's question with the usb wifi plugged in?

Hayc59 if you unplugged the usb wifi, then while it was unplugged were you able to operate normally as you did before all of these problems arose?  Or does it operate now only with the usb wifi plugged in?

Right now the wifi usb adapter is unplugged and working fine
I cannot tell you why its all good now but I am not complaining
this is whats listed in device manager
Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n Wifi Adaptor

Under Device Manager, the Network Adapters button should list your LAN Network Adapter (allows Internet connection while plugged into the modem/router via ethernet cable), your Wireless Network Adapter (Ralink RT5390), and also the usb adapter driver (when plugged in) ... yes?

Right now the wifi usb adapter is unplugged and working fine

I presume you didn't mean the usb adapter was working fine while unplugged, but rather that you had wifi connection with it unplugged.
