Just to be clear -- you had a restore point from yesterday and just made a new one after you received the "successful registration" message as shown in the image above.
yes that is correct.    [NET Framework 2.0 Registration correction tool completed.]

Sorry to leave you hanging around but I'm in a different time zone to you!

Right, now that you have run the correction tool you should be able to run the previously downloaded "Microsoft Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1" again. If all goes to plan then it should solve the problems that you previously experienced with Windows Update. However, I have never had to install this service pack twice so I am not sure if it will generate a "This package is already installed" message and prevent you from re-installing. If it does let us know.

That's fine...I'm in and out as well...not withstanding timezones.

On trying the service pack reinstall again, I again got the message you mentioned:

I may need to put this process on hold until after the new year, but I should be around for some of today still to try a few more things.

We may not have to do anything else. Run Windows Update and see if it offers you Net Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1, I'm hoping that, now we have cleared the version 2.0 registration,  it won't do so.

.

It offers me no updates.

When I try to access "review update history"...I'm getting the same error message as before.

I don't know if it's clear from what I've posted, so I'll just say that after got the couldn't install message on the service pack this last time....I didn't go to add/remove programs and try to change or uninstall it.  Was I supposed to?

Great - Your .NET Framework is exactly in the condition that it should be - Do not install / remove / change anything to do with that program. The problem that you are seeing lays entirely within Windows update.

Work your way through the steps at this web page. It will sort out the problem for you - do not deviate from what is written on that page, follow the instructions precisely.

Merry Christmas

Looks like ETR & I were writing at the same time.  I'll add this as well as it also wouldn't hurt to make sure you have the current Windows Update client.  Please post the *last* 50 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log.

   1. Click Start, and then click Run.
   2. In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log, and then click OK.

See  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093 if you need additional instructions.

ok...I am up to step 7. I can access the update site each time. I can search for updates (it doesn't find any critical ones)  I cannot view my update history file---that's the link that gives me the error message. Here is what is hanging me up:
Quote
Step 7)

Temporarily disabling antivirus and firewall programs while you use Windows Update may solve this problem. Be sure to enable them again when you complete the update process...

It is also worth noting that the new Active X control, used by V4 of Windows Update, collects patch information and sends/receives that information over port 443, instead of port 80 as in the past...

If you have port 443 blocked at your router/firewall then try unblocking it.

Number 1, is it safe to diable my antivirus and firewall to do this?
Number 2....I have no idea how to check if port 443 is blocked in my firewall.  (I am running CA suite)

While I'm waiting on instructions about step 7, I'm doing the other things that are in the list:

Step 8: My Programs/windowsupdate file is empty. There is no file titled Program Files\Windowsupdate\V4

Step 9: yes, my encription is 128 bit

Step 10:

Step 9: yes, my encription is 128 bit

Step 10: LAN settings button
Click Advanced and make sure there is a tick in the box next to:
"Use proxy server for all protocols."  -- Did that (I found the box unchecked when I accessed it..  However, no change at the WU site.

Step 11:  Deleted two files from the Host file  (both titled MicrosoftSpy-something or other) no Akamai files present.

Step 12: N/A...was for IE6. I am running IE7

Step 13: entry for 248.e.akamai.net not present.

Step 14:  Don't want to do that one, because it's asking me to run a bunch of .dlls, so I wanted to check about that before doing it.

....and with all of that, no change in the results when visiting the windows update site.

What firewall are you using?

Also, it could be IE add-ons that are causing the disruption.  It is recommended that you disable all non-Microsoft add-ons in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.
3. In the Show box, click the set of add-ons that you want to see.
4. Change Enable to Disable
5. Ok the change.

OMG..... Just went to the update site and changed the URL from http:// to https://

AND I NOW HAVE ACCESS to my update history. !

This shows the update that failed:

The error message:
Quote
Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x800706BE
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following resources.

Why did that work?  And should I try to install it again?

Edit: I am using the CA firewall.  Aren't these all microsoft addons:

So, your problem is solved - you were using port 80 (http) instead of port 443 (https). The "s" in "https" stands for "secure": Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, Secure uses a protocol called Secure Sockets Layer - its what gives you the padlock icon in your browser taskbar.

No! We have spent a lot of time and effort getting that SP in place, do not try and install it again. You have an entry in your WU history that shows that Windows Update failed but the SP is in place.

If you are happy that WU is working and you can see your history, now is the time to sit on your hands and not touch anything. In particular, be very wary of any registry cleaners or Disk Compactors / Disk space recovery tools - something damaged the registration of your installed files and those type of tools are the most likely candidates. Seek advice before using such tools.
