RAM reduced?
« on: August 29, 2020, 07:23:09 AM »
I am sure that my computer had 8GB RAM installed. It is something I am 100% sure about.

I noticed today in the Settings that the RAM installed is 6GB.

How this is possible?

You need to inspect your RAM sticks and verify their size. Power off and unplug from the wall. Open the side panel and touch bare metal of the case interior to discharge any static in your body. Then carefully remove each stick. There likely will be small levers, like the white ones seen in this image, to push that will unlock and push out the sticks. The sticks should be labeled to indicate their size. You need to verify you do indeed have 8GB.

Return each stick back to the same slot. Note they can only go in one way as there will be a notch or key in the stick you align to a corresponding key in the slot. Once aligned properly, push straight down on each end of the stick until that lever "clicks" into its locked position.

Note in some cases, if the sticks were not properly seated before, removing and replacing them in this manner will scrape clean their contacts (a good thing) and ensure they are properly seated.

Do NOT touch the electrical contacts on the RAM sticks.

OK, thank you!

Not sure if I will be able to do it, but I will try to check it.

What if I want to increase the installed RAM?

How can I check about that?

Most popular RAM makers have auto-scanning and/or manual entry RAM wizards to help you determine which RAM is compatible with your motherboard. The Crucial Memory Advisor if a popular one. You download and run a small program, it will scan your computer then recommend compatible RAM. You don't have to buy from them, but they do guarantee if you buy suggested RAM it will work.

The test showed that I have 6GB RAM installed: 2GB and 4GB.

Wow! I was convinced it was 8GB!!! I still see in my mind the number 8!!!

It also says that I can increase it up to 16GB. I think I will consider to buy an 8GB stick to replace the 2GB one. Do I have to have anything in mind so not to take something incompatible?

That's what the RAM wizards do for us. The only other concern could be your power supply - but that would be a pretty extreme case. RAM sticks add very little demand compared to CPUs and graphics cards.

Even more significant in your case is you will be replacing one stick for another instead of adding a new stick. Even though the replacement stick will be bigger, its power demands will be insignificantly larger, if larger at all.

Having said that, 6GB of RAM is still a nice chunk of RAM. If the primary use of your computer is to check emails, update social media, browse the internet, and create an occasional Word document, it is not likely you will "see" any performance gains.

Well, you never indicated this was a laptop. That means the image and instructions I posted above would not be right. You need to check your manual to see how to remove and install RAM modules.

As far as that memory stick, if that is one the Crucial wizard suggested, then I will assume it will work.

Yes, it's a laptop. I'm sorry I didn't indicate that.

I attach the wizard's result.

If you think that the Amazon link is compatible with that, I will go for it.

Looks like the same part number to me. Beyond that, I have to go by what the Crucial wizard says.

Thank you.  :)

Let's make a total RAM replacement now! It would be interesting.

Sure.

If Amazon is right, I will have the sticks on Friday.

Taking a guess, 2GB are reserved for an integrated video card. The size may or may not be adjustable in a BIOS/UEFI setting.
