Router's and wi-fi's passwords recovery?
« on: April 04, 2018, 05:23:07 PM »
Hello. It's me again... :)

Some months ago, I thought that my email, my network etc. were hacked. Then, I decided to change most of my passwords, including not only wi-fi's pass, but router's as well (Digerati talked about password and paraphrase). So far so good, but while reading the topic about Mary's computer and her internet connection issues, I remembered that I didn't wrote anywhere these two new passwords. Till now, I din't have any problem, because the devices I use are automatically connected with the wi-fi. But what if I need the passwords? Is there a way to recover them or restoring the router to the factory settings is the only solution?

That was password and passphrase. Password gets you into the router's admin menu and the passphrase is what each wireless device needs to access the wireless side of your network.

I know of no way to recover either of those. The good news is a factory reset is not hard, and easy to setup afterwards.

OK..... I didn't search about how to do this, and I think that I will leave it till something happens and have to connect a device manually again. I remember it was a pain to reconnect the printer then.

No! That's a bad message. Never, as in NEVER EVER "write" down your passwords.

You would amazed how many times I have been on a house call and looked under the keyboard, in the closest desk draw, in a rolodex or index card box sitting on the desk and found the users passwords to all their accounts.

This is about "physical" security. If a bad guy breaks into your home to steal your stuff, and sits down at your computer desk and searches everything within arms length of your chair, he better not find your passwords.

Use a software safe/manager. With a password safe you only have to remember one (ideally, very strong) password, the one into your safe. Here are some of the more popular.

Password Safe
KeePass Password Safe
RoboForm
LastPass

Thanks! I never thought of a password manager. Instead, I was planning to create a document opening with a password and including all the passwords in it, but I didn't proceed. I will download one of these programs and try it. Thanks again. If I need help with the router's resetting, I'll come here again.  :)

Good evening, all!

I knew that this ''simple'' procedure would not be so simple for me!!! I reset the router (I don't know if it's a modem or router), I have internet, but I have no telephone line.

The router is a FRITZ!Box 7360. As you can see from the attached photo the Fixed Line light is off. In the router's properties says No telephone numbers enabled, and when I try to add a new number, nothing happens. I called MTN, and the caller almost got angry with me, because I tried to reset the router! She said that if a technician comes here and concludes that the problem was caused by my mistake, I will be charged, as these things must be done by experts. I also got angry with her, saying that every customer has the right to change her/his passwords and that I know very well how to reset a router (  ::)  ). Anyway ... any help here?? I broke everything or there is still hope?

There's nothing attached.

That device is commonly called a "residential gateway". It is an integrated device with a modem, router, WAP (wireless access point) and 4-port Ethernet switch in one box. These are 4 discrete devices that just happen to share a case, main circuit board, power supply and menu. Some of these devices are like yours and include VOIP, Voice over IP for phone support.

You must have a telephone line as this is a DSL device.

Note to reset these devices, you typically just unplug them for a few minutes. Some have a backup battery (to keep the phone alive) so you may have to put that too - or wait for the tech to appear.

I forgot the attachment before. I attached it before the modify time ended.

Good morning!

Problem solved.

I had to delete all the devices and numbers from the router's page and then add them again. Fixed line light should not be on. For such a simple info, they made like I hacked their site. Their technician would come on Tuesday, and he would charge me for this.

Well, I know that many of you celebrated Easter last Sunday. Some of us celebrate it tomorrow. I'm sending my wishes to ALL of you. And thanks, ones again.  :)
