Still unable to Update; Last successful attempt 12/20/17
« on: March 12, 2018, 03:36:03 PM »
I own an HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cc5xx, 64-bit, x64-based processor.  Windows 10 Home, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.125.
My Windows Defender shows Virus & Threat, Device Performance & Health, Firewall & Network, and App & Browser Control are all OK.
When creating a Word Document and checking on the updates, it says I have the latest version updated.
When checking under my Systems, Updates, it states my last successful Update was 12//20/17 (KB4058043).
It also states that Updates are available: 2801-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x-based System (KB4056892) is awaiting a restart BUT there is a 28 after the KB4056892 that indicates I have restarted the laptop 28 times.
And apparently update (KB4058072) also needs a restart.

I am stumped as to why I can't update.  Thank you for your assistance.
Jean

Hi, Jean.

The awaiting a restart issue with KB 4056892 is a "known issue":
Quote
Even though the update was successfully installed, Windows Update incorrectly reports that the update failed to install. To verify the installation, select Check for Updates to confirm that there are no additional updates available.

You can also type About your PC in the Search box on your taskbar to confirm that your device is using the expected OS build.

That said, you are one-step ahead of me because the OS Build 16299.125 you provided indicates that neither KB 4056892 nor the fix installed.

Please go to Settings > Windows Update > View installed Update History and copy/paste any error code appearing with the failed update(s).  For example, I recall a failed message with the same update (Failed to install on ‎1/‎4/‎2018 - 0x80240034) but after checking for updates again, it installed correctly (Successfully installed on ‎1/‎4/‎2018).

In addition, go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and select "View Installed Updates".  Reconfirm from the results there that KB 4056892 is not shown as installed.

As per your first request, I see NO error codes anywhere.

Second request: see attached file.

Actually, KB 4058702 was installed on January 6, 2018, but likely because it is not a cumulative update.

A.  Please run the Windows Update troubleshooter
  • Download the Windows Update Troubleshooter and then select Open or Save in the pop-up window.
Note: If you select Save, you need to go to the folder  where the troubleshooter is downloaded to after the download is  complete, and then double-click the latest wu.diagcab file to run the  troubleshooter.
  • Select Next and follow the steps in the wizard to find and fix problems with Windows Update.
Check for updates and, if they still don't install, do the following:

B.  Run System File Checker (SFC):
  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter and wait for it to finish (~15 minutes).
Code: [Select]
sfc /scannow
    C. Run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM):
    • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
    • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
    • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code: [Select]
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time.

If not prompted for a restart, shutdown/restart anyway and then check for updates.

None of the suggestions solved the problem.

That is what I was afraid of but we had to try and they are the first steps you'd need to follow at Sysnative anyway.  Sysnative Forums has a dedicated Windows Update Forum with an excellent success rate helping people having problems installing updates.  In fact, there is even a "Windows Update Academy" where those interested in helping others are taught.

So, please register at Sysnative and follow the instructions in the Windows Update Forum Posting Instructions thread.

Since you have already run the Windows Update Trouble Shooter, SFC and DISM, you'll be starting with #4.  Explain that you have been referred there for help by me and provide a link to your topic here.  https://www.landzdown.com/computer-problems-questions-and-solutions!/still-unable-to-update-last-successful-attempt-122017/.

I'll be watching for your post and will subscribe to the topic so I can follow along.  Note, however that it is an extremely busy forum so it may be a couple of days before you receive a response.  If you & Bruce are going to be on the road without an Internet connection, let me know so I can advise the person helping you.
