Unknown user account...how do I delete it?
« on: May 05, 2006, 03:45:20 PM »
Something has created a user account that refuses to be deleted. I have created two user accounts on my machine. One with administrator rights and the other with limited user rights. I noticed a new account after I installed the latest IE7 Beta 2. This account does not appear in the control panel under user accounts. I have not been able to delete it even in safe mode. Here are the screenshots: Help!  :help:

10rand,
Have you tried going in to your administrator account via safe mode to remove the other account.
see How to start the computer in Safe mode

10rand  :)

I´m not quite familliar with IE7, but it has got some nice features. First it has a "phishing filter", where dubious sites ends up and you´ll notice it by the adress field turns to red.
As far as I can see in the screenshot you provided, it´s that filter you´re trying to delete. I´m not familliar with the technical solution on how it´s implemented in IE, but I would think it´s in order.
Another great feature in IE7 is that it can be run in "Protected mode" which is an account with less privileges than a guest-account.
I believe the folders and account you have discovered are related to those two functions, thus nothing to worry about

Tried it and I still could not delete the folder.

The thing is, I have uninstalled IE7 and this folder has been left behind. I do not thing it is going to cause any harm. I am just one of those who gets very irritated when programs do not completely uninstall and leave bits and pieces of themselves behind. I would still like to remove it though if possible. Thanks for your help guys.

Have finally done it! I have managed to remove the unknown user account. I do not know what had happened, but there seemed that some cross-pollination of a few files had happened from my Ltd account to the unknown one. (e.g. the Microsoft Word template was not in the Ltd account but in the Unknown one). So I created a new account with limited privileges and copied all the information I wanted from the old one(Ltd account with cross-pollinated files), then went to "Start>Control panel>User accounts> selected the Old account, then deleted it. After I had done this, I rebooted (don't know if it was necessary) then I went on and deleted the unknown account from 'Documents and Settings folder'. It did not resist this time around. Thanks.

10rand,
Glad to here that you have it sorted
I do recommend however that you make a new restore point, even though one should have been made automatically by windows but it better to add another than find out that for some reason it did not put one
also if you have not already have done so do a Disk Defragmentation.
